@ShepperdOneill I know it has been a few years on this - thank you for the information! If I wanted to instance the whole assembly and have it follow the same target, would that be possible? Say a plane flying overhead and both turrets follow it's motion, but one is an instance of the original (or even a cloner with a lot of them)?
For me it worked like this. I created the texture via unwrap and applied the logo in photoshop. In Arnold I created a layer shader and applied the logo to the second material just like you did and it worked!
What photo are you basing this UFO model on? All the "I Want To Believe" posters used throughout the X-files were of saucers of the Billy Meier type. Smooth, silver mostly featureless saucers. They also bear striking resemblance to the UFO sketches and models of the Bob Lazar "Sport Model". Due to copyright problems with Billy Meier not giving permission for them to use his UFO photo for the poster, they recreated something very similar to it a few times in several of the posters used on screen throughout the show and films. Later editions of the poster show lights on the underside, orb type based on the Adamski craft. This is a cool saucer model, bears resemblance to the GTA V saucer (with lights turned off) the lighting of the trees is absolutely perfect.
Thank you! Rather than try to replicate the saucer in the poster accurately, I decided to make my own version of it. I wanted something similar to give the same look and feel, but also different.
@@ShepperdOneill I will say, it has the implied detail and design choices that make really good craft for a photo. Reminds me of Gulf Breeze, I like the upturned pool filter style design
Yes, triangles should be avoided if the mesh is going to be deformed. It's also good practice to learn to model in quads to keep the mesh clean, and you won't have to deal with other issues that might occur later on.
This still seems extraordinarily convoluted compared to C4D's native way of handling alphas/PSDs. Is there no way in Arnold to read layered PSDs and just step through the layers needed?
I am not aware of any way for Arnold to read layers within a PSD file. (I haven't used Arnold in a while due to the constant IPR crashes I was having. I'm currently working with Vray 6.1) I just looked at Arnold 4.6 and I did not see any options for PSD image layers. The Vray material works a bit like C4D's native material, and will let you select PSD layers. However, the Vray node material does not appear to have that option. I will have to look into this further. I've always just used black/white images for alpha rather than multi-layer PSDs.
Unfortunately, the CD Tools plugin doesn't work with R26 and 2023. It only works with R25 and below using the Insydium Bridge. Sadly, it doesn't look like anyone is going to try and save the plugin.
First off, thank you for making this video @ShepperOneil 12 years later still useful! I ran into the problem that when I keyframe the values for the barrel speed from 0 to 720 and then back to 0 after the animation goes past the second keyframe of 720 it starts rotating backward. Hopefully, you can help me with this. FYI I tried with smaller values to make sure it wasn't the stroboscopic effect.
The Xpresso setup I used in this video is an older setup, and unfortunately it has that problem that you described. Try the following and let me know if it works: ibb.co/x1w363n
Dang. You've done such an excellent job of explaining everything you're doing. Unfortunately with C4D 2023 updates breaking the loading of the CD Tools plugins, I've had to skip several of the videos because the instruction is mostly about using those specific commands. I would have loved to have seen a series with your clarity of explanation and demonstration that focused entirely on all the native constraints and their limitations and workarounds.
Yes, unfortunately it's sad that the tools no longer work with the latest C4D 2023. I was hoping that Insydium would have updated, but it looks like it may not happen. I have yet to really dig into 2023's constraints to see if they offer the same options that the CD Tools has.
@@ShepperdOneill Yeah, I scratched my head trying to get them work with 2023 for literal hours. Nevertheless, I appreciate this series - I've had to do some trial and error trying to figure out how Cactus Dan's tools were repurposing some of the native constraints, but I'm making my way. The first couple of videos in this series really gave me a solid foundation for understanding how the constraints system works, so I think by the time I reached this video I was pretty competent to muck about and find my way around, so I thank you for that! Edit: I re-read my first comment and realized my wording might have sounded a little disparaging. My bad, I've edited the first comment.
Just a tip: trying to figure out to replicate that topology renders with c4d hair and only usind a image node is not enough, add a "camera projection node" to this recipe and you should be fine. Worked for me.
