Some recent shots of a job a did for a client. The client provided me with CAD files, but I also had to model quite a lot of it. I used Arnold (C4DtoA), and while the final shots and animation turned out good, the render time was ridiculously long.
I wanted to render the DoF, but was not able to, as render times would have been longer, so I rendered a depth pass. Unfortunately, I was encountering weird fringing and the DoF still did not look right, but used it anyway.
The first shot in this video took 10 hours, 48 minutes to render on my 88-thread machine. Yes, you read that right. Over 10 hours to render one 1080p frame.

Awesome job! WOW almost 11 hours render time! That's pretty insane. Looking great though :)

Thanks! I was using medium render settings too. Lots of lights, SSS materials, and blurred plastics. Pretty insane indeed!

Looks great! But those render times will drive me insane ... With a good GPU Octane can produce similar results, with DOF, in less than 5min per 1080p frame.

That’s the difference between bias and unbiased rendering.

Amazing results! How were you able to create the highlight flares/bloom? I was under the impression Arnold couldn't create these lens/camera effects.

Thanks! The flares and blooms were done in After Effects using the Trapcode Starglow plugin. At the time I rendered this, Arnold did not have any post effects. Since then, Arnold now has the "bloom" feature. It's not an actual lens effect, but a post effect that is applied after the frame is rendered.

Although most renderers have post effects like bloom, glow, flares, and star glow it is better to produce those effects post rendering as camera angles can change the results drastically. Definitely something that should be produced and composited inside your compositing tool of choice for maximum control.

Great work! Can I ask how you did the ridged surface of the cylinder?

Sorry for the late reply. Those ridged cylinders were modeled using a technique I learned years ago.

What made you decide to use Arnold? I used it for one job because it gave it felt more realistic. But switched to Redshift because it took way too long. In Redshift I tried to get as realistic as possible and my results are not bad. The speed of it really determined the choice for me. Their dof is really good too.

I chose Arnold because Vray had too many problems that were not being fixed. I wanted to try RedShift, but I have an older GPU with only 2GBs of RAM. I'm not sure which would be faster. A single GTX 950 using RedShift, or an 88-thread workstation and a 40-thread render node using Arnold across TeamRender. Vray is currently being overhauled. I've been testing their alpha version for the last month and it looks promising. If it proves to be good, I may switch back.

Why do some of your geometry had triangles?
@ShepperdOneill
@ShepperdOneill Год назад
Some of the models were sent to me from the client, and those models were created in CAD software. When exporting, they are usually triangulated.

@@ShepperdOneill Okay got it, there is an arnold node called round corner that should be useful in this case.
