We are Dane, Jillie, Sebastian and Rowan. We are often known by people around us as the weird family that keeps taking off from a comfortable life in Maui or Santa Barbara to live in foreign countries, often in the middle of the countryside on farms, and often in not so comfortable dwellings like a hot van or a canvas tent. As a couple, Dane and I have always been undeniably in love with a rural and traditional life... think shepherds, cheese makers, ancient olive groves, hearing the history about the land, cooking over a fire, singing ballads about old growth forests... that kind of thing. So this often led us to Europe, especially because Dane was raised in Portugal, but also because vibrant festivals and tradition and all the best foods live there. It also meant that we chose to make our home for a few years in old stone cottages in the mountains of Northern Spain in Asturias as well as deciding to give birth to our first born in the quiet countryside of interior Portugal.

The only video that tells the real truth and History of Asturias and Spain. No, Americans, we are not "latinos" in the sense you understand that term, we are not "color" people, we are white Caucasian Europeans, mostly descendant of Germanic people. Regarding the Moors they only colonised, but they never mixed with us, there is only a 4% of DNA in some Spaniards. FYI, the name Ruiz, which for you is so "latino" comes from Spain and it's originally an evolution from Germanic Roderick.. then in Spain was Rui.. and later Ruiz that means Son of Rui of Roderick's son. The conquerors took that name massively to South America.

I'm from Iran. My beautiful country was also annexed by the satanic forces of Islam. Despite fighting tooth and nails, my ancestors lost the fight to the barbarian Arab Muslims not to mention that the ancient Roman empire was fully supporting their invasion of Persia. Hats off for Don Pelayo. The warriors like him rescued Spain from Islam.❤👑

Lived in Comillas, Cantabria for several years. Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria provinces offer a much different view of Spain. The green landscape and fresh outdoor feeling prevails all year. But, keep in mind, it does rain and has many days of overcast. The beaches generally are safe but for experienced swimmers...and the water is indeed "butt" cold. I do miss the diversity, language, food and the simplicity of life compared to life in the US/Florida. Those of you who are there now..relish the time and the experiences...RH/Florida

Great video, I'm of Portugese decent born in canada yet I can read and speak Portugese. in our family my grandfather born 1872-1965, was never addressed by his name directly. My relatives and friends from the area he lived in portugal always refered to him as Dom Antonio Miranda. my brother born in portugal remembers running around the vast Orchards grandfather had, as well as cattle lands and a Bullfighting ranch. we often teased our parants about the stories we'd hear. But little by little we've come to realize theres some truth to it all. In 2017 my wife (Canadian) bought us flights to portugal saying time you connect with your ancestry. As we walked around the Museum a museum curator hears me reading in portugese, he says wow so you speak our lauguage! so I explained to him in the process he recongnized my dilect. Asked me what were my family names Vieira & Miranda I told him. Well he tells me your background is firmly intrench in our history for both those names are on the ceiling in Sintra place as part of the 72 names of portugals nobility! so we checked it out and Wow it was true. Since then we've done more research, we have a family ring thats been estamated at around 300-350 years old of Iberian origin at a Museum. they asked my brother if he was Spanish he said no portugese! Aw!... there you go same thing Iberain, this is 24 cart gold this ring the ostrich feathers on the sides denotes two things its affiliated with royal authority, but also with the family name Miranda! So although today it means nothing as the Monarchy was done away with as well as the nobility its still very intresting, and now the stories of people stepping of the sidewalks tipping there hats to my grandparants in the old city, grandfather never shaving himself but each day a barber came to shave him in his home. the Bullfighting ranch given to my oldest uncle in 1943. Very sereal. So this video was amazing when I saw the Castles and Palaces the rich history etc.. I came to know that theres so much more to learn and see! both my family names originate in northern portugal, my Dad had crystal blue eyes was 6.ft 1inch humm, wonder where he got those jeans eh. please make some more of these videos as they help us touch our pass in our minds and hearts. P.S. yes my friends are always amazed that Bagpipes are part of our culture!!!! who knew Lol
