I finally received a family heirloom of my grandfather's, perhaps 100 years old, supposedly made by the famous "Patek" of Patek-Philippe before they partnered... at least that's what I was told. Indeed, I do have what appears to be a 14K pocket watch with a beautifully engraved design. However, it is labelled a "Pateck Geneve, Ancre 15 rubis, Remontoir". It is also missing the hands and doesn't appear functional even mechanically (something wrong inside). Given all the likelihood I won't be able to retire by selling this watch, the big question is, do I bother even trying to fix it back to working condition? Yes it probably has some value even as a well-made period piece, but is it worth the cost of repair or is this "totalled" in the sense that I am better off melting it down for the value of the gold? Most likely I will keep it for sentimental value and do neither. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
