2021 Tesla Autopilot/Full Self-Driving Beta vs Toyota Highlander Openpilot Comma 3

It's been almost 2 years since Logan and I took our vehicles out and did a self-driving test drive comparison between Tesla Autopilot/FSD and Comma Openpilot. A lot of things have changed for both systems so we're going to explain each system and then we'll go out and drive each other's cars. I'm going to experience Openpilot and Logan's going to drive my Tesla Model 3 and experience FSD Beta.

Sadly, Tesla is cutting corners to maximize profits by removing the LIDAR system and relying only on images from the cameras, which are not as good in combination with LIDAR. That gives a poor reputation to the AI autopilot system and a less desirable feature for the $15k price tag. Sorry Tesla, but I will keep my $15K for now until your creator stops juggling so many balls and give his full attention back to you.

After staring at a used '21 Camry Hybrid XSE with every option for $35k, a new fully loaded '22 Sonata Hybrid Limited for $38k popped up in my searches. Both cars would be good (or great) with OP, but both still run on gas and have a million things that can break under the hood if not maintained. OP on Hyundai's e-GMP cars is improving and the Ioniq 6 might be a better replacement for the Sonata (but not at $60k).

Comma 3 is now $1495. I have Comma 2 on my Prius and had two problems. The fan went on mine so I added a computer fan and painted the exterior white to prevent overheating in the sun. The other problem is the GPS system went bad. Not a huge problem as the Comma 2 does not require GPS to operate. I do get a green bar error message but so what. I have had my comma 2 for over three years and it was a great investment. My Comma 3 is coming soon and it will be pretty much a direct drop in plug and play. My comma 2 has over 40K miles on it and for the $400 a year it cost to buy over the 3 years, it was a great buy.

I really like the Openpilot treatment of human steering input. Would like to see Tesla implement this when they're more confident of FSD Beta. It's just more comfortable to be able to smoothly correct it rather than alarm going and full disengagement. I'd guess it's going to provide more fine tuned human feedback for training purposes too.

LOVE this video. Thank you Logan for comparing your car to Tesla's. This video has cemented my opinion that FSD is *not* a quality of life improvement. Quite the opposite, it's much more work than just driving the car manually. You're babysitting a toddler operating a car and waiting to catch it before it plows into a trailer, on top of the fact you can't assist it in any capacity. It's either engaged or disengaged. Meanwhile, Openpilot was shown in multiple situations that as a long time user I'd *never* use it in, like on city streets with cars along the sides and weird intersections. When it comes to highway driving, and more specifically 100-1000 mile road trips, Openpilot wins out without question.
@rachelkarengreen99
@rachelkarengreen99 2 года назад
They are doing completely different things. Tesla is trying to make a self driving car that can work in any situation. Openpilot and the drivers assistance features that are in cars by default these days just make highway driving more chill, which is cool, but completely not the point of FSD.
@robpruzan7292
@robpruzan7292 2 года назад
This is far from the truth if ur used to fsd beta. I let it drive me 99% of the time and let it take complicated intersections stress free. You know its limitations and how it will react. For example, the nudging is very easy to do but since the driver didn’t know how it seemed like baby sitting.
@mattbrown292

@@robpruzan7292 Sorry but no, FSD is stressful as hell. My inlaws have FSD and they are literally scared to use it because of the mistakes it has made. I don't mind FSD but i'm young and work in tech. I have a rav4 hybrid with openpilot and everyone in the family that has used both prefers openpilot. Sure fsd attempts to do more things but openpilot actually makes driving more relaxing. Openpilot lets you track your engagement time, in the past 1000 miles it has been engaged for 97% of them with both myself and my significant other using it. IMO the biggest problem with FSD is it doesn't work with you when you want to assist it. Openpilot integration is seemless in this regard. Also FSD,as you stated, has a learning curve.

Frankly, I don't see FSD getting government approval until our road system markings are more software friendly. The variables right now are rediculous as we can't even have our emergency vehicles give off a signal to indicate their presence. All it takes is a tiny electronic module attached to the roof.....dah. Software can do a lot but basic crap like that is a no brainer. I haven't heard one whisper of any government plans to do anything to promote an FSD system, any system. When Elon doesn't even get an invite to the president's meeting on EV's, it makes two things obvious, they hate Musk and their dumb as shit. I'm pretty sure they were afraid he'd dominate the meeting which, I'm afraid, is probably true as Musk doesn't play well with dummies. "10K no way" is my mantra in regard to FSD. Loooool, cringe… it’s basically enhancing crappy OE “lane keeping” (paint-bouncing/dancing-in-lane) that manufactures have in all cars now. As a professional driver myself for the past 20 years I am not a fan of FSD. That said I do enjoy it on long distance road trips. Driving on Ontario highways is my job, as you may or may not know highway 401 is the busiest highway in North America and there is a crash on it on average 1 every few hours from simple bumper taps to fatalities. One thing I find with autopilot is after you get comfortable using it you tend to not be as alert as you should be. I think FSD is a great idea for many drivers as I see many many bad drivers on the road every single day. It will eventually make things better and safer on the road but that I think is still at least 10 or more years away. I love my Tesla but I have one without autopilot a 2014 Tesla model S 90 and it's a great car but I'm glad I have to drive it. Its very enjoyable to drive. The retro fit autopilot for other cars is a great idea and a good price for what it is. Thank you for the video it was nice to see how others are advancing with this technology.
