Hello James, get an electrician to check if the door has any voltage, there might be an expose wire somewhere, that is dangerous. It’s common on new houses to have that problem it’s better to get it taken care of early
@isaacfrazier2202
@isaacfrazier2202 Год назад
To add to this, if there is voltage then your metal doors need to be bonded to the rest of the house. That way the doors will be equal potential to the surrounding area. It can be dangerous so please have someone look into that soon

As an electrician, where that sliding door is, right underneath it a bunch of 5-6" wafer lights. I also know that if there recessed cans that's more room to push towards that door. Personally I give it a week. Keep checking if the door has that decent shock when touched. Then consider an professional to look into the problem.
@zfpv7211
@zfpv7211 Год назад
It’s not an electrical connection to the door. It’s static caused by the new carpet. Happened at my new house for a few months too. It has a high enough dielectric field that it can even work through rubber shoes. If it was an electrical wire, it wouldn’t just spark, it would shock you. Typically static discharge or a couple thousand volts. Hence why you can hear it.

James, just a friendly caution, I cook on a stove often and whenever I cook something that has grease or fat that splatters at high heat, it hits the tile which in my house is glossed over but it might get absorbed by the brick and stain if you aren’t careful. Just a thought.

100% this, grease and smell will stain and soak into the brick. A clear polyurethane sealant should be enough though.
@ElTurfStuff

You're dead right about this,, the brick has to be sealed against grease and moisture, but with a mat finish. Also, if you don't do this, you can actually end up with little brick dust particles that would make very short work of that nice granite top.

@HeyItsJA
@HeyItsJA Год назад
The shock from the metal window/door frame is because your carpets (which are likely a plastic-based material like polyester) build up static really easily, and if you're wearing things like socks it'll only build up more/faster, so just the act of walking up to the window/door is going to build up charge that discharges when you touch the metal, hence the shock. You could maybe look into some sort of non-conductive coating like a clear plastic film (imagine PPF but much thinner) or clear varnish. Metal fabricators may have some better solutions.
@3124records
@3124records Год назад
Strad has to see this, i don’t even know how he could fix that unless he has a grounding pole to touch before he opens the door
@andrevoz9819
@andrevoz9819 Год назад
Just throwing it out there...perhaps replace the metal handles with some nice wooden handles (maybe mahogany or other wood) so it will eliminate the electric discharge Strad is creating from walking on his carpets and then touching the metal doors.
@poldelepel
@poldelepel Год назад
He could also change the carpets… Also the electric shocks are bigger when the air is dry. Now that room isn’t closed from the garage (big opening at the stairs). I assume the air in the garage is much colder, and when heated up in the room next to it, the heated air would get dryer (basic physics). So putting a door between the upstairs room and the garage, would make the air less dry and thus he would get less shocked. Still shocked, but less. He could also wait till summer to check that theory…
@styner3
@styner3 Год назад
It also could be a lack of humidity in the house, it's very cold and the heat takes the humidity of the house. A humidifier adds moisture eliminating the shock. My house did the same thing before I added one. He's not standing on carpet.

Your house project is coming along nicely, and it has been a pleasure to watch its progress. We designed and built a house in NY in 1991. We still have that place but also have a place in TX. The work and research involved in designing and building a home is immense. A few quick recommendations... 1. Yes, put in a larger range hood. Cooking vaporizes oil (aerosols) and it will get everywhere. You want a good rangehood to take out as much of that as possible. 2. I don't recommend going with red brick on the backsplash. It will be a nightmare to clean. Typical red brick is just too coarse and oil and other dirt will get stuck in the small crevices...and the mortar gaps in between...ugh! This is not a problem for exterior brick where a good rain or a hose down with a pressure washer is enough to clean it...not an option for interior. 3. If you REALLY want to go with brick, consider dense oven baked or fire brick (used to line interiors of furnaces). These are dense bricks and have a fine/smooth appearance. At least the front surface area will be much easier to clean and maintain. You still have to worry about the mortar...so consider flush mortar lines (though that takes away from the typical brick appearance). 4. Think about a larger (professional) range or rangetop...Viking or Wolf. I recommend, if you can still find them, (commercial) open burner style instead of sealed burners. I think BlueStar still makes them, but you might be able to find them in the Viking Professional range. I'm not sure if you have a 30-inch or a 36-inch, but I recommend a minimum 36 and you might even be able to fit in a 48-inch cooktop. 5. Consider a built-in fridge...SubZero. You really need a SubZero. They come with dual compressors (one for the fridge and one for the freezer) and are extremely reliable and long lasting...and they look really good! 6. Consider a Miele dishwasher (if you don't already have one). 7. Consider a double oven and a separate built-in microwave. Wolf is a good brand. Yes, my recommendations will likely mean a total redesign of the kitchen, but you have a spectacular house. You really should also have top of the line appliances and convenience in the kitchen to match it.

For the static shock on your doors, you can try a humidifier to bring moisture into the air because static shocks are more frequent in dryer air than in moist air. There's also static wrist bands you can get that should help. Also, if your socks are wool or if you're wearing anything wool, that will increase your charge and therefore increase your chance of getting shocked. So wearing cotton socks can help you reduce the chance as well. Your shoes could also be a contributing factor as well. If you have rubber sole shoes, that could help reduce the chances of a shock. Also, wearing polyester clothing will help reduce the chances. Layering clothing will increase the chances. This one is probably going to be the easiest but also not necessarily a permanent fix. Try using a coin to touch the metal with first. It should help diffuse the charge you've built up and get rid of the intense shock. It should get rid of the shock altogether, but it's not something I've tried as i don't have doors like your yours, and it's just something that helps me in the winter here in Tennessee when i get out of my car and go to close the door. It helps prevent me getting shocked. So it should work, but only way to really know is to try. Hopefully any of these help you. Love your videos btw and my day is instantly better when i get the notification of a new one :)

of the options for the garage floor, the one you missed is to simply do epoxy floors. when you add the chips and stuff you can even you can choose the colors. so maybe something like a grey base, with black and red chips to match the brick. and getting all those light switches on one isn't that difficult. replace the switches themselves with Lutron Caseta ones. then you can use an app on your phone to turn them on all at once. automate them to motion sensors, etc. you could even add a second switch that controls them all at once. I'm honestly surprised with all that went into the house, that there's not much proper smart home stuff.

Might be worth a try. btw, I can literally hear through my headphones when you get shocked lol, so its coming through the mic its that bad.

James... another great video. While I'll be the first to admit that I am not usually much interested in home reno videos, I always enjoy your updates, so please keep them coming. Next, while I may not always agree with your design decisions, NO ONE gets to make them but you, so do what you want. That being said, as you're going to install the Ferrari as if it were a piece of art (which it very much is), framing it properly is absolutely critical to achieving the impact you're hoping for. To that end, I suggest doing some renderings *before* the final mounting. The brick may be cool, but it creates a very busy backdrop (multiple shades of red as well as a complex pattern of white created by the grout lines). At the risk of overstepping, might I suggest that you place a dark rectangle - perhaps made to look like the tarmac of a race track - behind the car? I think it would look great against the brick, would suit the subject perfectly, and offer a great high contrast backdrop for whatever color you eventually choose for the Ferrari itself. Looking forward to seeing whatever you end up choosing... thanks again for bringing us all along for the ride!

If you are changing out the HOOD over the cook-top I hope you are also swapping out the cook-top for one that is proportionately larger to match the larger Hood.Otherwise it will look odd with a much smaller cook-top with a huge hood.

What i have used on previous projects is Anti-static flooring. The anti-static floor is used to impede the creation of electrostatic discharge. This, also known as ESD, is the abrupt flow of electricity that occurs when a charged object gets in contact with another surface. Normally it will not cause harm, although it can turn out to be annoying and, in extreme cases, a little dangerous. Best of luck.

Strad! Couple quick options for the static issue! 1: put a humidifier in that room. (Static zaps are mostly common in cold dry environments) also house plants can help with this. 2: have your carpenter skin the metal frame work with wood. 3: your carpet is a big culprit in creating the charge. They do make “anti static guard” it is is spray form and you mist the carpet. Sprayway is one brand. 4: If this is an issue you have in general. They make “anti static” wrist bands you can wear. 5: get an air ionizing blower fan. You walk under them when entering some warehouses / stores. They remove static charges in the air! Try one or multiple of those options!!

To fix the doors over looking the garage, you can run a small cooper wire from the frame of the door to the floor, this will stop it from shocking you.

As a general contractor AND a serious home cook, I'd STRONGLY recommend against the red brick backsplash. Everything you cook will hit the brick and soak into the bricks. It will begin to smell because its impossible to clean and it will stain as well. Its your home, and your decision, but give it some more thought.

the door/window looking out into the garage isn't grounded properly which is why you get a shock touching it. while that isn't a massive issue, it can mean differential breakers or even regular magnetic breakers can switch off due to a current being drawn. to solve that, i think it best to contact an electrician
