Nice to see an old steel frame built up! I ride a Bianchi from 1986 with Giant PR2 stock road wheels and narrow gravel bars. It’s a budget build but turned out a lot more solid that I had imagined. I also kept the down tube shifters. I use it on organized metrics and it holds up very nicely. That Schwinn looks straight. I’d put grease on the freebody hub before installing the cassette though. Grease the hell out of everything and wipe off excess. Helps repel water too.

Maybe you can answer my question: do you know if sizing is the same for vintage steel bikes as the modern compact road bike frames?
@BruceChastain
@BruceChastain 2 года назад
The sizing of the frames is the same I the fact that it’s measuring the top of the seat tube to the center of the BB, but I think the way the geometry is, the fit for the same size will be pretty different.

I still use the older toe clip straps from the once used pedals from the ‘70’s to keep our front wheels from flipping side to side. My new maintenance stand came with an adjustable rod that fastens to the handlebars to lock the steering up. I’m looking to do this to my early 90’s Cannondale CAD3 that I found thrown out to the curb with the trash….not a thing wrong with it besides the rims having a noticeable flat spot on them….your video has convinced me to go ahead and do the same….looks great! I want to plan for future upgrades on my bike after i end up riding the current parts into the ground, however long that takes (with mantinancing.)
@kevinfeeney5309
@kevinfeeney5309 3 года назад
at minimum, you'll need to get a hub w/ a freehub..lace to old wheel rim (or get completely different wheels.... {coldset (stretch out) the rear to 130mm if it isn't already} then you'll need the cassette that matches the number of speeds for your rear derailleur and shifter.
@kevinfeeney5309
@kevinfeeney5309 3 года назад
For example on my 1976 KHS Gran Sport mixte: Went from 6 speed to 8 speed so i had to swap derailleur and shifters (Shimano Acera RD and MicroNEW 2x8 brifters) Cold set the rear to 130mm using RJ the Bike Guy's method of threaded rod. Had LBS re-align the dropouts since i didn't make the dropout alignment tools. Threw on some good condition Alex wheelset, 700c. Installed 38mm tires. Repositioned the brake pads. Recently swapped to Microshift's wide range 8 speed cassette (11-42) so I had to get the Wolftooth Roadlink.

@@kevinfeeney5309cold setting, basically one of the advantages steel has over aluminum. Also while my bike is a big box bike,the frame itself seems fairly solid. Just annoyed it came with a quill stem (I need to see if the neck is wide enough to just slot in a threadless fork or if I have to find an oddball sized fork or not) and I don't think you can just add mounts for disc brakes on a frame, can you?
@kevinfeeney5309
@kevinfeeney5309 3 года назад
I converted a full rigid MTB into a hardtail by doing just that...... installed threadless headset... and of course a threadless fork (went w/ a suspension fork).... the stem and of course the stack spacers to adjust to my preferred position. It has canti/v-brake bosses (chose v-brakes)......and also disc mount. The frame itself doesn't have disc brake mounts so I'm not even bothering.. i'd have to get new wheels and the disc brakes too...at that point i'd just get a more recent bike. HOWEVER, for framesets w/ canti/v-brake bosses there is this adapter that mounts at the dropout AND has a bracing arm that bolts to the non-drive side brake boss. I also use a quill stem adapter that retains the threaded set up but I can use threadless stems and whatever handlebar clamp size bars i want.
