In this video I show the process of how I restored this old junk 1987 Schwinn Le Tour road bike I bought for $20 into a great looking 1x road bike. This was my most nice looking restoration I've done so far! And by the way the final weight was 9.8kg (21.6 lbs). Wheels and fork were from a 1999 Pinarello I used to have.
*** I will add updates and details to the blog post here:

Another Schwinn put back in service! How does this one ride compared to your other one? The exage levers are SUPER good, they have a quick release button on the side that lets you pop open the brakes for easy tire removal without having to let the air out. If you use brakes with a QR as well, you can (sometimes, depending on the brake limit) combine them to get some impressive rim brake clearance on a drop bar bike. Also nice mill, can't wait to see what kinds of unique parts you start making with it! Some pro painting tips I collected from professionals: - Disposible foam earplugs can be stuffed into screw holes to protect the threads while allowing you to still paint right up to the edge. - Taping off the BB shell surface (using a sharp xacto knife or razor blade to get it clean and round) saves the hassle of scraping it later. If the shell was never faced you should get a bike shop to do it. Ensures there's no gaps around the BB. - The dropout faces also should be protected with tape so you get the right 'bite' when tightening the axle in. These can just be scraped after. - You can find reproduction decals online. They go on before you clearcoat. - The empty holes in the fork and chainstays are exhaust holes for hot gasses when the frame was brazed or welded together. You can plug these with something paintable before painting. If you don't, I figured out that using some hard beeswax works on a painted frame - knead it to soften it and then smear it in. It'll harden up when cold. You can color the beeswax to match your frame using paste food coloring but that takes some experimentation. And something I personally learned - downtube shifters can be easy to set up, but they can also be a nightmare. All are not equal and looking up the manual can solve some strange 'this doesn't feel quite right' issues due to a specific order of setting up so the the tension is correct. This is more important if you use them indexed or with a 2x up front.

First time watching you dude, I was going to say it was a great video, but you left us in the dark about so many different things. you didn't tell us where you source the forks from, the making of the parts, the gear cassette, the sprocket and crank set you left out so much man. It was a good build, but I just think you missed a chance of making this an incredible video.

"What seems like a really cheap project ended up being quite a bite more as you more as you start adding those parts along" Man, we've never been more wrong our entire lives. I decided to restore my dad's Japanese bike (Mamachari) to a vintage cruiser-esque bike a month ago that he bought from a surplus store for only $30. It has been sitting in our garage for two years collecting dust and rust. I thought that it would be such a cheap restoration given that I mostly have the tools already. I ended up spending A LOT than I initially thought I would. But in the end, the expenses did not matter to me. It was the journey and the craft that makes that project super worth it.

I hear ya man, sometimes it's just best to pay someone and then spend more time doing what you really want to do. This is a lesson I know but don't practice enough. On the other hand, as far as the 3d printing and milling machine, I used it but it isn't really necessary, I know people have been doing this sort of thing with more basic tools for many years. Thanks for watching.

This bike was really easy to assemble ru-vid.comUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

Thanks a lot Joao! To tell you the truth I don't recall what this bike had on it to start with, maybe it was a 7 speed because it's from the later 80s. I think I only had to widen the triangle a tiny bit, which is no issue on a steel frame. I did have to widen another road frame a lot more than this one once.

Most of my tools are english I was a metrologist when I was working and all the gages were english until the last few years before I retired, even then most of my inspection work was done in mm. The electronic gages automatically convert. I will leave metric to you young guys.
