We are finally back to visit with our favorite market gardener & friend, Jim Kovaleski, at his winter location in New Port Richey, Florida. Jim is known for breaking the rules of convention & this video highlight is no exception. This time around, we get to follow along with his morning routine of harvesting, packing & transporting his incredible produce that comes straight from his front yard by bicycle to the local health food store only 3 blocks away.
To see the full collection of videos with Jim, you can find the full playlist here - bit.ly/2Lds1Uv
This nomadic market gardener has created a life of joy & purpose, influencing an entire community of growers throughout the Tampa Bay area, all while making an income to meet his own needs. Jim has been a pivotal role model of ours since 2011, not long after we first began to grow food. We can genuinely say that he was a significant catalyst for change in our lives & we owe the foundation of our success to Jim's influence.
We have condensed down countless hours of footage to create a 10-hour video course featuring 6 Modules & 68 Lessons:
Grass-Fed Vegetables
Apples, Blueberries, Raspberries & Many More Cold Climate Fruits
The Art of the Scythe: Everything You Need to Know
Annual & Perennial Polycultures
Planting Grids for Esthetics + Intensive Planting
Tangible Planning & Site Analysis
Challenging Permaculture Technique
Land Connections & Observation
Hugelkultur vs. Hugeleski?
Seeds & Starts: Suggested Varieties
Soil Blocks 101: Step-by-Step, Unique Ingredients, Planting Instructions & More Tips
Crop Circle Squash & Other Unique Methods for Growing Potatoes, Melons, Garlic & Onions
Books & Resources

If you want to learn more about our online course with Jim:
www.thegrassfedmarketgarden.com
Each year in late spring, Jim travels up to a little town just outside Eastport, Maine, to grow the most delicious, clean & vibrant food you can find. Then in early fall, he packs up & heads down to Florida to repeat the same plan.
Jim creates his own evolving adaptations; a mixture of pure refined classic agriculture (the scythe), techniques passed along by elder growers, elements from books that have proven their worth & the intrinsic download from living with the land & slowing down enough to read it's own suggestions.
He is able to make an honest living doing this very thing he loves so much. His days bring him joy, purpose, connection & peace. The insights & techniques he has collected are invaluable. He plants, harvests, preps & markets in a way that naturally flows & the whole natural farming process is just waiting to be shared with you.

This is how everyone used to live in the US before Columbo ruined it. You'd farm some stuff and trade with others who were farming what your weren't, hunt for your meat or go fishing. You'd find an empty piece of land and just chop down some trees and build a house no taxes no realtors no inspectors building permits mortgages loan officers interest land surveys nothing just find a spot and live.

Its natural man, all the bullshit of the world today and this man is growing his own food, and learning, and trading his harvests to make a living. I myself am looking to become self sufficient, as I get older, with my sons I want them to learn the things I never did, and that now seems more important than anything, and thats taking pride in what I do and being able to live that way and my boys learning what patients and love can create, life and food and happiness.

ogadl ogadl Yeah but if you think the goat sacrificing secret society corporate currency worshippers would let that ever happen, then you’re in for a shock. Why let people live free when you can keep them penned in a big city like cattle and give them debts and jobs to pay those debts. Then you can give them enough superficial amenities to have them believe it was all worth it, and get them to raise the next wave just the same. Civilisation can be both tremendous and beautiful but also dark, squalid and reductive to the human spirit outside of its natural habitat.

Just an advice: if you haven't done intensive hardening like this, know that it is physically demanding. HOWEVER, your body may feel the workout at the beginning of the season (especially if you haven't been active prior to the growing season), but in a few weeks you become stronger and a month later you're super fit and feel no strain at all working long hours (if need be, depending on the size of your garden).

Oh yeah - I think I recall you mentioning this before actually. The soil there must be excellent then..and as d hamby said, mulch! Beautiful looking crops.
@katnip2u
@katnip2u 5 лет назад
Mulch! Retains moisture, when broken down provides nutrients, stops weeds, and keeps the soil cool for the plants AND BENEFICIAL critters, including worms, who fertilize your soil for the plants. If the whole organism of the garden is happy and balanced, sickness and even bad bugs don't strike or do minimal damage. It's the same as with humans: when you're run down and your immune system is weak, the same bug that doesn't affect others gets you sick. Also, companion planting helps to prevent bugs from finding a host. Making the garden inviting for beneficial insects and birds who eat the bad bugs helps too. If you have chickens, feed them only garden scraps in the afternoon/eve and starve them for protein and then release them for the last hour or two of day light into your fully ESTABLISHED veggie garden (one just like Jim's, not a freshly planted one, where the chickens would scratch out, trample, snack on .. young seedlings)--they'll clean it of bugs, slugs, etc in no time.

I started living a part of my dream last year here in Toronto, Ontario, in a bit different form though: I'm doing the gardening for people who can't or don't know how (since I don't have a land of my own right now). Last year it was ornamental gardening, this year I'm also going to advertise vegetable/green/herb .. gigs.
