Feeding soil is the answer. I feel for those who are on the fertilizer train - doesn’t look like it’ll make the rounds this year. I’m in town, growing on a 60 year old parking lot that was a railroad bed before that - third growing season has been mind blowing. Wood chips. Crazy happy plants and fruit trees this year - and next to no weeds. Thank you guys for your input to the knowledge trough! Feeding us all in many ways!

I do concrete for a living. Go to your local contractor supply store and buy #3 or #4 bars 20ft long which is a standard. I can stand on the bigger #4 bar and pick up one side and bend 90 degrees in a sweep almost exactly like his. Also, if your ocd and want good spacing, hammer some pipe into where you want the legs and just put your "U" shaped rebar into the pipes. Rebar is designed to have tensile and compressive strength so the 3 and 4 bars are way easier to bend than you would think

Took one look at the back of the high tunnel and knew what it was. Was shocked to see it in this video but, pleasantly surprised. Maine is starting to look more and more attractive for one of at least two homestead sites. Love Jim's approach to life, gardening and migrating with the seasons! So awesome and inspiring! Good job guys!

I'm not a farmer, but have an interest it. Thirty years ago I came across a book written by a lady in her late seventies, who lived in New Hampshire, and was using this grass mulch technique. She was visited by the University of New Hampshire agriculture professors. This technique encourages worms and keeps the soil moist.

It’s like the soil crumbs are varnished, so it holds its structure. The soil life both produces and applies the varnish.

Tell yo boy Jim to look up someone called Rick Simpson. A guy out of Nova Scotia. I encourage jim to look into high thc cannabis plants. Thc is more medicinal than CBD and when both are used that’s when you get the synergistic effect. Keep up the good work godbless. P.s Rick Simpson popularised pure cannabis oil and showed thousands and thousands of times how effective it is against cancers.

Jim is right that bush beans are hard to pick, especially if you are growing a lot of them. I like pole beans best, partly because they are easier to pick (especially for people like me with really bad backs), but also because they have a longer picking season.

For perennials it really helps to clear the area first, then amend, then plant, then mulch. Now all you have to do is maintain an edge by mowing/edging, scything, or hoeing or tilling. And top off the mulch as needed. Newbies who are into mulching tend to neglect the maintaining the edge part. You need to stop the plants from creeping in from the edge and also from getting so tall that they can send their seeds far into the demilitarized zone. When mulching, pay particular attention to this zone where nature will conspire to have weeds infiltrate.

Got idea from Josh Sattin. Sattin Hill Farm. They go in easy (loam clay sand) and come out easy or could be left in ground over winter.
