SL2-S Review: • The Leica SL2-S Review...
HELLO AND WELCOME BACK! Today I do a quick comparison against the $9000 Leica 50 APO and the $1000 Voigtlander 50 APO. Two lenses cut from the same kind of cloth (manual focus, M mount, 50mm APO designs) except one is a little smaller and costs $9000 while the other comes in at $1000. The Voigtlander 50 APO is an amazing M mount lens and gets eerily close to the Leica for thousands less.
In the video I share side by side images to show the difference in color, bokeh and rendering/character. WHAT DO YOU SEE?
Enjoy!

@@cameraprepper7938 In today's world of tec, if you're looking to slow down or the compact size/form factor, the Leica M is the way to go. The size & quality of the Leica's M glass blows my mind. And they have been doing it for years.

I have to agree with some of the other commenters that the Voigt has a more circular bokeh that extends around the whole background, as if there is a hint of swirl.

Thanks for another thoughtful, real-world review. It looks to me that the Voightlander has a bit more contrast, which can be good or bad depending on individual tastes and processing preferences. I own several of both brands and love them all for their individuality.

Great job by Voigtlander. There is a swirl in bokeh with the Voigtlander, and Leica's bokeh is more pleasing, but considering the price, it might not be that important of a difference.

Yeah the swirl is the only difference that really stood out to me.. having owned the Noctilux f/1, I have a sweet spot for those swirly bokeh lenses and I would say the Voigtlander wins it for me here.

If you showed these two pictures of her and the background, 99% of people wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference between them. I’d say that extra 1% difference isn’t worth $8000 more!

I own the Voigtlander and can't get over how incredible it is for the cost. But I believe, Voigtlander with this design went for full circular aperture blades at f2.8 & f5.6. So you have to stop down. I've noticed at F2 you get more of that cat eye bokeh swirl in comparison to the Leica which is why the Leica does render more smoother background and it shows.

Though my SL2S won’t arrive until tomorrow I can say the 50 and 35 APO using a M to Z adapter on my Z6 render better than my Zeiss lens. Sharp but not clinically sharp (one reason I sold my Otus lenses.). Simply love these Voigtlanders.

The voigtlander has a hint more swirl bokeh and vignette but it’s so subtle. The APO Cron was only $6k not that long ago new. For traveling I’m taking the Voigtlander. Any mark on the Cron and the resale drops big time.

There is only one real-world difference between these two lenses - other than price, and that is that the Summicron is more compact. If that's worth $8,000 to you, buy the Summicron. But if you have the $9 grand to spend, and are not bloated with Red Dot Kool Aid, buy the Voightlander and give the difference in price to your favorite charity.
@panmaew

These lenses are very close, and on several aspects almost unintelligible from each other except the voigtlander lens renders a more swirly looking bokeh (the old Noct-Nikkor 58mm f1.2 gives this in spades if you are wondering what that means and want to see it distinctly). Some may like that and some may prefer a more uniformly stretched-out bokeh and this is just a matter of preference. For me, as I am from a cinematography background I'd rather have a more uniform look of bokeh if I could choose. Both lenses however are excellent at resisting longitudinal chromatic aberrations in both foreground and background. Very rare lenses can claim that especially still photography lenses.

I’ve seen a lot talk from Leica and vendors about the SL2-S being specifically designed to also work well with M-mount lenses. All the way down to the new back-lit sensor the SL2-S is using. I can’t imagine whatever you’d see on a native mount would throw the comparisons too far in either direction. I think there’s even a few reviews online that use an M10 to compare and they’re still very close

I think you hit the nail on the head... 2nd hand Leica APO or Voigtlander APO. With either of those you don't stand to lose much. Over 10 years or more though might be better off with the Leica as the APO's become more rare / collectible if Leica stops manufacturing them. Brand new Leica 50 APO is a losing proposition though.

About the only difference to my eye is that the Voigtlander has slightly more optical vignetting at the edges, which narrows out of focus areas slightly at the edges and corners. As such, the Leica's bokeh in some situations is just slightly better. Having used the Voigtlander 50mm myself, it is a simply spectacular optic, and is just brilliantly sharp across the frame from f/2, with a lovely rendering. If the Leica was $300 more expensive, I could maybe, possibly justify it being worth the price difference for that very minor difference in bokeh. At $8,000, it's no contest. There is just no rational way to justify that huge a price increase for such a minor difference in image quality. And while the Leica is slighlty smaller physically, the Voigtlander is actually slightly lighter in weight, so even bulk isn't a factor, IMO.
@KingFiercer_zip

I would say that the Leica always produces a nice image, while the Voigtlander sometimes gives a more lively bokeh, which is also interesting.

Ken Rockwell would say buying a Leica M to resort to“discount” lenses (Voigtlander or Zeiss) is “for losers”. It seems he’s wrong on that one. However, I think the Voigtlander may obstruct the rangefinder with the hood.

It's the same when it comes to watches: the major purpose of a watch is to tell the time. Both can be accomplished with a cheap $50 quartz plastic watch and with a $5,000+ mechanical watch from one of those highly sophisticated Swiss watch companies. But mostly it is the status that comes with the use of expensive brands as you buy yourself the membership into an exclusive circle of connaisseurs. So I would say that those who are interested into the purpose of a product in terms of quality and functionality, they will go for the Voigtländer. The others who rate exclusivity more than functionality will go for the Leica. Just my few cents...

It’s not about quality. It’s about the NAME. The rich, who have bought the Leica SLR, want the Leica lens because it is a Leica lens. Heck, you can get similar image quality from much cheaper lenses from Canon, Nikon, Fuji Tokina, etc. That’s simply not the point. What would be interesting is if I owned an earlier Leica “M” series camera bought used, then the price difference between Leica lenses and Voigtlander lenses (honestly, I didn’t even know Voigtlander was still in business!) would have me favoring the latter. While the differences in image performance are simply not important, photography is a lot like the audiophile hobby. A pair of $2000, 1 meter interconnect cables is not going to change the sound of anyone’s audio system significantly, but dyed-in-the-wool audiophiles will gladly pay it for a sonic difference that will, perception-wise, fade into the background after a couple of days. That’s the nature of avocational passions.

For pixel pippers, the difference is minor minor minor. For real life photographs, no difference at all. For web view or prints until, let's say, A4, even a similar lens of 500€ or less, do a perfect job too. Maybe, and I say maybe with some reservations, you see some difference when printing larger sizes, like for ex. A1 or A0 sizes. Dont get me wrong, but this leads me to conclude that the 9000$ for that lens it serves only the purpose of self richness feeling for the person who bought it.

I don't know, in an artistic endeavor I'd say lab tests mean nothing and perceptual comparisons are everything. If you need a lab test to tell you one lens is sharper, it's irrelevant if the differences can't be perceived. Meanwhile a lab test won't tell you how a lens renders.
