$110 Gravel Driveway

Installing a driveway can be a costly investment, but it doesn't have to be. I recently installed a gravel driveway at my investment property for only $110! Was it done right? Ehhhh kinda. But it will serve its purpose better than the overgrown grass driveway.
By using a skid steer and trailer, I was able to haul in the gravel myself, saving thousands of dollars between labor costs, rental costs, and materials. The installation process was simple, and the end result was a decent and functional driveway that added curb appeal to my property.
If you're looking to install a driveway on a budget, I highly recommend considering a DIY gravel installation. Especially when you just need to do a refresh.
$70 for a tarp
$60 for gravel
Sold $20 of dirt
Basically, it's $110 in material and 3 hours of work. Obviously, we are fortunate enough to have a dump trailer and skid steer, which obviously cuts down on costs.
Just another reason why I love the dumpster business model we're operating. It allows us to do so many overlapping services. While also letting us use the existing equipment to add curb appeal to my investment properties.

One time I did this job and the neighbors had an old 400 ft driveway and came to my boss asking if I could maybe fix some spots in their driveway on my way out, somehow they talked him down to a half hour T&M I think that was a 110 bucks. They got lucky it was me working that day because I regraded that whole thing all the way to the house 😅

Shit i wish it was that cheap for me! But my driveway is about half an acre long, about ten feet wide but curves out to twenty feet at one point to make room for our dump trailer. We already have a gravel driveway but i want to edge it and add more rock or some crushed asphalt or something cause the rock is gping everywhere and sinking in other places. And its a new build home less than a year old.
@tracybrayton6800

Wait... $140 is the cheapest I could get that gravel plus delivery... Another $150 for a 4 hours rental of the skid... Another $40 for good landscape weed barrier... Compactor rental? Thats the lowest number I can come up with in Knoxville, Tn.. $300+++
@rollingops
@rollingops 3 месяца назад
@tracybrayton6800 rock from our quarry is insanely cheap. Menards sells smaller rolls of the geo fabric barrier, and I own the skid...and roll off trailer. So it was really just the cost of material.
@bcsbbq7829

My guy you need to put down a base layer before putting loose rock on top. You need material that has fines so it will pack down and harden. Loose rock will just move and spread out over time

You don't need base material theses days the driveway fabric does the base material job. Then you add the rock to top. If you use #73 you be fine and it will lock in just fine.

Genuine question, i thought gravel driveways were more complicated than just laying down a bunch of random pebbles? Like im looking into DIYing a small section in my backyard, and everything is saying you need large stones in the middle for drainage, and a certain shape to it or else itll disperse too quickly and be useless. But ive never done this so i dont know. Also i gotta admit, i dont think the title of this video is fair when you OWN the most expensive piece of equipment, lol. Kinda takes away the significance, it would be like me posting a "DIY build a crazy nice gaming computer for $100" because i already own all the parts and specialized equipment that costs thousands and that nobody else watching the video is likely to already own. Hahaha
@rollingops
@rollingops 8 месяцев назад
Hahaha, yea man. I'll give it to ya. I click baited that title a bit. Sure it would be the case if you did it all by hand...including dragging 5 tons of rock from a quarry. LOL. I'd say this video shows the basic principal of laying a gravel drive. But in only a one minute video you don't see that I also come back and lay a border of bricks to contain the rock and make it look better. I also come back with bags of cement and spread the cement around with garden spreader. It is what I use as a filler type grain to pack it all in well. Not to actually lay cement but to bod the rock and prevent it from rolling around so much. In my area, typically your base for a basic driveway is CM6 Rock, then you may come back with something like a 1 inch rock with Lyme to really pack it down. Especially a long high traffic drive. If it is a very uneven area, with huge low spots. You may come in with 3 inch rock before all of that. But that's usually in a very large space. I'm no expert, but just what I've done and seen done in the past.

@rollingops
@rollingops 9 месяцев назад
@ThePaulg123 yes driveway fabric, which also comes in varying thickness. If laid properly, you shouldn't need to worry about weeds for a very long time. But it's no bullet proof. They come through eventually as the rock wear through the fabric, pack down looges gravel with fine gravel so it doesn't move as much.

@@rollingops thanks for the tips, any recommendations for products in the UK? when you say loose gravel do you mean a very small fine gravel? my intention is to use 20mm gravel stones as I've been told they are better choice so they don't get in the tyre treads? Or would it be 20mm and also a very small fine gravel that mixes , or to go underneath the 20mm layer? Any suggestions otherwise I'm happy to hear, and much appreciated 👍🏻 Forgot to mention I intended to use plastic grid type systems where you lay them down like a jigsaw and fill the stones over the top and spread the stones over evenly, the grid gives it structure and strength, can't think of the proper name right now.
