My uncle Rene owned the company (Korite) that mined these beauties in Medicine Hat. He donated a huge one to Drumheller’s Royal Tyrell Museum, through his other company, Canada Fossils. I had the privilege of visiting and photographing the whole process right down to the jewelry making. So breathtakingly beautiful.

That was a once in a lifetime opportunity just to be able to access a photograph (much less be related to) a unique collection of gorgeous fossils! I had never heard of, nor seen, Ammonite before Dan Hurd. How can anyone contemplate the power of the Earth's natural forces that brought these fossils into their stunning beauty we see today? It just seems like my adjectives to describe them are completely inadequate.

Oh gosh, the matte finish really adds a sophisticated vibe to the ammonites. I can understand why gloss is the default, but there's something very silky about matte.
@joalyincontroly4379

It seems difficult to see through the glare on the others, and the matte finish lets the natural beauty shine for itself. Personally I far prefer the matte finish.

6:34 I am only halfway through this video and I am in HEAVEN. DAN Hurd you are sharing THE BEST VIDEO THAT YOU HAVE EVER MADE!!!! The closeness of the shots the stillness of the camera and the slow-steady movement that is flowing past the fossil is showing -to perfection-the colors and the chatoyancy of the piece. I think I will save this and watch it many times. It is very entrancing to watch. Thank you.

Hi. After 40 years of search I also found two of them partially opalized. I am stunned! The best one I found has a diameter of +- 3 cm with a tiny spot of color. So I know that the jewels that you showed in the vid are fabulous. Have a nice day!
@brentonmah3258
@brentonmah3258 2 месяца назад
“Opalized” is a misnomer as opalization would involve silica-rich fluids as in the formation of opal being responsible for the color. Rather, the color here is due to the shell of the ammonite which is made of aragonite. So “iridescence” would be a better term here; no opal is involved.

Thank you for showing us the up close, unique beauties these Ammonites are! If not for you, I had no clue that these existed. I have seen a couple of other's videos where they found them. However, these were found in small streams and creek beds without being intact or in color. These are stunning exhibits and each price takes each piece's rarity into account. Unbelievable what the Earth's circumstances create! The other I wanted to thank you for was explaining the difference between the creature's 'name' vs. the fossilized remnants on display. I never stopped to even think about that until you talked about it. Well, until we 'meet' again, I'm sending warmth and blessings from Alabama to you and your family ❤️

It would be very interesting if you would talk about the stabilization process these Ammonite fossils go through in order to be able to be displayed. I would imagine they are very brittle and require extensive work in order to make them stable enough to display. It seems as though it is a bit of a "black art" and the artists who do it would be secretive of their techniques, but it would be so fascinating to see the process. Thanks so much for showing these beautiful fossils!

When I was a kid (a long time ago) we used to find cephalopod (mostly baculite) and arthropod (such as trilobote) fossils in Colorado. The largest I found was a partial baculite about 12 or 14" long and as thick as my wrist at one end. In life it must have been 3 or 4 feet long, just tje shell. I had a modest collection, which my Mom eventually donated to the Denver Museum of Matural History (after I sort of lost interest). Those ammalite are spectacular! I especially liked the example given a matte finish. Nothing I had was anywhere near that colorful!

Fresh oxalic acid will take some of the yellow off. Heating the acid will make it work faster and the yellow will not precipitate out of the solution. Talk to your friend at the quartz mine in Arkansas about cleaning quartz in oxalic acid.

wow those are some beauts. I like that matte one with the two ridges in it for some reason, well multiple really. looks like its ribs or spine is still part of it, real uniquely shaped and I like how its proportioned. beautiful natural work of art there. I'm a sucker for natures Fibonacci sequence though and that's a great display of it. props to the artist that prepared it like that. also, I didnt know they had to finish the back side as well. they're somewhat thin. makes sense though. very nice work.

Those are some beautiful specimens. I recently acquired a large Ammonite, similar in size to some of these big ones.. but not near so colourful. It has not been preserved or cleaned. Do you have a video, or can you point me to one on how to stabilize and preserve it. I have watched a couple of videos by amateurs but I want to make sure it's done right. Might even be willing to send it to a professional to perform rather than doing it myself. What would you recommend?

They always remind me of some paint my dad had made for my moms car. he paid a he'll of alot of money on this paint. My mom loved molar cars. Her favorite was road runners. My dad promised her he'd keep her in throes or mopar vehicles for the rest of her life. As a kid that's all I remembered was moms Hotrods dad's trucks and motorcycle. dad was a master mechanic out of california in the 70s and a80s. Was one of the est. Highly certified to work on foreign and domestic. If it had a motor he could build it from ground up. He even helped build cars fo4 Mickey Thompson Steve McQueen and micheal landon. Well he had this one car my mom loved. It was a 71 Plymouth satellite half vinyl top thT was white with blue top and the blue extended as a striped down the side to a point by the front wheel. It had fat tires in back tiny ones in front and had a 383 bored out to a 400. A friend offered twice the oust my dad sold it. mom was pissed but what she didnt know was he was in the works on her dream car for their anniversery.he had gotten a beat up 68 road runner and put a 440 6pack motor in it with muncie trans. it was metalflake midnight blue with black vinyl top. Dad paid alot of money for thempaintjob because running down the side was a white stripe that the paint was mixed with crushed opal. It sparkled with color the contract between the midnight metalflake blue bling and the opal white was such a beautiful sight to behold.ive used opalized paint on models before too. But that's what the ammolites remind me of. Is like someone spray painted them with opal.
