I made it back for another good look at my Sapphire claim, and this time we pulled out a LOT of sapphires from my claim as well as some amazing Garnets. I am very excited for this claim and I think we can find even better gemstones in the future. Filmed in August, 2022

My boyfriend is a geologist and I asked him about the pegmatite. He said pegmatite is an extreme intrusive igneous rock, but it is found in greenschist facies metamorphic rock all over the place. I don't know what all that means, but apparently it's definitely found in metamorphic! So, you're right :)
@MulletDestructur
@MulletDestructur Год назад
In plain-ish English, basically pegmatite comes up through the existing rock as magma intrusions and cools crystallizing into the sapphire gems. The heat from the magma intrusions aids in transforming the rock layers into a metamorphic rock seam.

If you heat metamorphic rock up enough, it eventually begins to melt. This area was at the perfect point to melt some of the rock, but not all, and then cooled to leave igneous rock (pegmatite) in the areas that melted and metamorphic rock in the areas that stayed solid. Source: former igneous and economic geologist.

@@MulletDestructur You are describing contact metamorphism. It is not metamorphic from regional alteration. It is metamorphic directly from the intrusion.
@michiganrockhounds
@michiganrockhounds Год назад
Pegmatites can occur in metamorphic rocks as igneous intrusions. The existence of pegmatites heavily implies re-melting through intense heat caused by the metamorphic process, making the rock an igneous as it as completely re-melted; but the rock remaining was only partially melted, so you have igneous inside of metamorphic.

I used to work for an older woman She always talked about her star sapphire and I remember driving her to her safety deposit box at the bank she got all excited that she had someone to show it to 🤣she probably hadn't seen it in many years but when she showed it to me I instantly knew why it was in a bank and not her safe at home . I will probably never see one as big or beautifully as hers but I will always be fascinated by these beautiful gems . Thanks again for taking us on the hunt with you

Hi Dan. Shaun the Geologist here. The pegamatite is likely the result of partial melting of the metamorphic rock. When the rock is hot enough, fluids released by some minerals in the rock will lower the melting point in localised pockets.

Wrong
@matthewwillson6515

@@D_one why
@danielgoetze
@danielgoetze Год назад
Yeah, this is basicaly correct, Pegmitite itself is always igneous because it forms from magma, even if its parcial melt from a metamorphic event. It could be that they are result from an intrusion that occoured after the metamorphic event as well. It should be writen in the rock which is the case if you learn how to read it.

The opal is my birth stone and has always been my favorite, and remains so! Thank you for all you do for us out here! I don’t get out hunting like I used to, both of my shoulders are destroyed and I have a 14 level fusion in my back, so you will never know how much enjoyment I get living vicariously through you and many others here on RU-vid! I live in Wyoming and we have alot to offer in crystals and rocks, Jade, labradorite, petrified, opalized and crystallized wood! I have 1000s of pounds of petrified wood in my yard alone! Come see us in Wyoming and see what you can find! Thank you again! Brenda (Wild Ginger)😊

I have a geology degree and back in Minnesota as an undergraduate, we studied "hard rock" geology, aka petrology. I think the confusion could arise that pegmatites arise from close association with igneous intrusive bodies, but they are actually commonly at the top of the mass and are from "dewatering" or when the igneous mass loses its water and a lot of cool minerals come with it and out of solution, like mainly silica, but could be micas and even feldspars, and of course, for economic interest, gold and other valuable mineral and gems, in with the crazy coarse mineral grains formation which are due not to slow cooling, but super slow precipitation and cooling. This Metamorphic rock was probably very close to a huge igneous intrusion, what that metamorphosed it, and the pegmatite pushed up into it. There is a complete gradation between igneous intrusions and very coarse metamorphic rocks, and sometimes it's only the remnant bedding in an otherwise igneous rock that clues you into that it is metamorphic.

i'm a geologist also, it seems like the level of metamorphism is high enough to create a mylonitic texture where the leucocratic and melanocratic minerals segregate. Those pegmatites look aligned and boudined and circular which indicate they might be higher concentrations of the leucocratic material in the gneiss/granulite where the environment is favorable to form the chemicals assemblage required to precipitate corundum crystals
