The Boxster has no fans!
The radiator fans aren't working - and I'm going to fix it for $10, instead of paying huge $ at the Porsche dealer! The Boxsturd is getting that much closer to being back on the road! Fix your 986!
Here's a link where you can buy the resistors through my Amazon Associates program - amzn.to/33TmIQy

Ok, I am still confused even after reading the previous comments about the wiring. Others were confused too. NONE of the videos on the web showing this replacement clearly state what kind of wiring has which function. Somebody commented that the high-speed function does not work if one connects White with Green/White on one side, and green on the other side of the resistor. Is that true or false? And which wiring is correct to get BOTH fan speeds working? Thank you for the clarification.

I dug around on a boxster forum and found this info from an old thread. Hope this helps, and I've pinned this comment. 3 wires coming out of the resistor. Green/white. Goes from resistor to fan. Green goes from resistor to connector. White goes from resistor to connector. I believe the green wire and the white wire are 12 volt input for the two fan speeds. The green with the white stripe, is the output to the fan. Another black wire ( ground) goes from connector to fan.

THANK YOU! I did the same repair today and it worked great. I also followed 'b" recommendation and uses a heat sink bought on amazon glued with heat conducting glue. I connected the green and the White coming form the plug to one terminal or resistor. The Green wire going to the fan to other. I installed the resistor mounted on the sink at the same location than the genuine one allowing the fan to cool it. It works great!

Thanks. I tested both of my fans today because the high fans were always going on. I tested the high and low speed via jumping the relays and the low speed isn’t working so I’ve ordered two resistors. Hopefully it should be sorted. Thanks for the video

On close examination Porsche's "over-engineering" strikes again! The car is supposed to have low speed fans that come on when you turn on the AC or if the car gets a little hot. Then, high-speed fans when the car gets really hot. The way you completed your project, you now have ONLY low speed fans because you have both circuits (the green and the white wires) flowing current through the resistor. If you test the old resistor, you'll find a dead short between the green wire that goes to the fan and the white wire that goes to the high speed relay. So, the white wire needs be connected directly to the green fan wire for high speed fan operation. Those wires also connect to one side of the resistor. The other side of the resistor is connected to the remaining green wire for low speed fan.

Gliderguy Now you have me confused 😕 I appreciate it sounds easy but I’m finding this difficult to follow, would you be kind enough to spare a few minutes to explain by means of a circuit diagram, any help would be appreciated, thanks JRJ

@@jiffjaff1371 did you ever sort the correct wiring so that both hi and low work as they should ...

@@blakechesbro3602 Well yes and no….., I think the problem with mine is that my 2.5 litre doesn’t have air con so the first stage wouldn’t kick in, so I wired up a simple x3 stage fan switch activated via the relays, ie, “1, Off and 2” ….“1” can manually bring on the lower stage 1speed and “2” brings on the higher speed, I came across this wiring diagram by someone else on line which works fine, it also allows the normal temperature control to operate automatically and fine. Been on many road trips and isn’t been an issue, found it to be really useful in traffic delays. Not sure how I can post the diagram here on Y T.

This mod worked perfect. I did however slightly improved it by the following; After cutting the oem resistor, I used it as a heat sink and mounting surface for the resistor with a 1 1/2" hose clamp. The thought came after I compared temps from right (190 degrees and left (210 degrees) side. Left was the repaired side. After my improvement, right side was 190 and left side was 140 degrees constant. Btw wiring is green w/white stripe AND White to one terminal or resistor. Green wire to other terminal. Works like a charm!

Thanks for the tip. I notice ac vent temp not as cold on start up. Passenger side fan on but not driver's side. Gotta check relays, fuses first then the resistor and if it is broken I will do the same repair you did.

Oops that’s not how I wired it! I wired the striped wire one end and the two solid wires the other end! It works fine though! I’m guessing the white wire just adds the supply to the mixture so doesn’t really matter which end it goes? The fan works when and how it should😃

Does this mod allow the fan to work on high and low speed? I did this mod and thank you very much for posting. Did you connect the green/white wire to the white wire and then on the other side of the resistor just the solid green wire?
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 5 лет назад
Yes, it mimics the factory resistor, so the fans work the same as if there was a OEM resistor installed.

Can you verify the correct wiring? Seems like the two green wires should be on one side of the resistor and the white wire on the other...
@ThrottleGrotto

Green with white stripe and white wire to one terminal, green to the other. Should work great!
@stevenharpervw
@stevenharpervw 6 лет назад
you want to bolt that resistor to something made of metal, as a heat sink, those resistors get HOT (that cable tie could melt)
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 6 лет назад
Good call, Steven- I will mod that once I get the proper fender liner in place. I've got a few scraps of aluminium that will be perfect for that.

I don't remember offhand, but if you use 12 gauge, that should be sufficient to handle the fan load.
