Quick and easy diagnostic, repair and test of a failing radiator fan without removing any body parts.
Two radiators house two fans at each corner of the front end of the car, hidden behind the bumper.
* The resistors that control the speed control tend to fail and prevent the fan from activating
* There are two speed setting - High & Low depending on the engine temperature. The resistors reduce the voltage sent to the fan, reducing the fan speed (when working correctly)
* Simple instruction of how to bypass the relay to test the fan
* Relay location & function
* Where & how to test the airflow of each fan
Porsche 996.2 with two front fans that are operated by a simple two phase (speed) system based on the engine temperature conditions.
Faulty low speed resistor.

Fantastic info on how to test if the fan/resistor is working!

Many thanks, my fans are both ok, did the jumper testing - full speed ok,, but low speed resistors. I've subscribed

Appreciate the video. I have a 986 and just discovered my passenger side fan isn't on. Going to troubleshoot first but I'm hoping this is the fix.

Good luck. You can get the resistors on Amazon or eBay. If your fan has been dormant for a long time the bushes may have seized. You can remove the plastic cover off the back of the fan and spray WD40 type lube in to free it up. I had that issue and it kicked back into life after a few applications of lube and light taps with a hammer, all without removing any parts.

@@edsporschegarage5057 Good to know! Thanks. I believe I found the right resistor already, just waiting to buy it until I get a chance to troubleshoot the fan. Went out to start yesterday and realized I had left my headlights on. So once the battery is done on my trickle charger I'll start troubleshooting. Also planning on wiring in an override fan switch for the high setting. Might do an override for the engine bay fan as well.

Thanks for the great video. Can you tell me if this is the same in a 997? Thanks again.

Almost identical. Porsche tend to not change things that work so you will find that there may be slight differences in where you can mount the resistors but most of the electrical values are the same. It’s worth checking in the forums on Google before ordering parts like the resistors @0.55 ohm’s but from what I have read, they are the same. It’s surprising how many people out there don’t realise that there fans are not operating correctly. Just by using simple jumper pins you can bypass the automated switches and check them.

@@edsporschegarage5057 thanks, I can't find any mention of them or anything for sale from Porsche for the 997 at all!

@@pjay3028 … check the forums to make sure they are 0.55 ohms, I’m pretty sure they are and then find them on eBay. Porsche sell the whole unit but they cost £££. I picked a pack up on eBay for £5

@@edsporschegarage5057 I've just found this in the forums: No resistors on 997-1. The fans are controlled by electronics with their own control box. From the Tech Book for the 997-1... "An infinite fan control for the radiators has been introduced with the 3.6 litre and 3.8 litre engines of the new 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S. This new feature permits infinite control of the fan speed as a function of the coolant temperature and the system pressure in the air conditioning system instead of two-stage control. It has the advantage of requiring less current and therefore creates less of a load on the vehicle electrical system. With staged control, when a temperature threshold was exceeded the next fan speed had to cover all of the allocated temperature range. With infinite control, the fan speed can be continuously adjusted to the actual requirement. This means that the fan speeds can often be reduced, thereby decreasing noise and vibrations."

Hi, do you have a link for the resistor? Is it just universal, do I just need a 5 ohm , 100w resistor from anywhere? Thanks

Just tried this but my resistor gets seriusly hot - wonder if its just a poor quality component?

Sounds like it unless there is a wiring problem as I had no such trouble. Seriously hit sounds like a short, watch a few youtube videos on how to test it and your wiring

@edsporschegarage5057 Yes I think probably a poor quality component. Rs component website seems to be down so might just make do with one low speed fan until I find a good resistor

@edsporschegarage5057 poor quality resistor it was measuring 2-4ohms! Ordered a proper one from rs 🙌
