Chase Freedom Unlimited (I think this is the best for true beginners - has no annual fee. I think you should save the points though, and wait to redeem them until you’ve gotten a different Chase, like Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserved, since then you’ll be able to redeem points for travel instead of cash back, which has a lot more value in it. Feel free to comment if you’re interested in this strategy and I’ll explain more in detail.)

Chase Sapphire Preferred (I think this is the best for someone not new to credit cards but new to travel hacking and OK with an annual fee)

I was told to hate credit cards. Now I have a total of 8. I have a really good credit score while rotating my credit cards and ALWAYS keeping 0 balance. It all comes down to education, focus, discipline and good habits. For people that have really bad impulse buying issues, I would recommend caution. Great Video Tutorial!

@alisf12
@alisf12 2 года назад
You’re right, I just hate the credit score system in general. It’s a system designed to keep you in debt and with the little education given about credit cards in schools it’s not hard to see how people find themselves drowning in debt. Yes they might be at fault personally but the system isn’t great either

Thank you for the video. I saw someone else talk about how you can leverage credit cards to travel and I'm interested in getting started. What I like about your video is that you actually listed examples on how you can plan a trip and decide if you want to pay cash or use points. I currently only have one card which I've had for years and basically use it to accumulate points to buy Christmas Gifts for my kids but I think now I'm interested in taking it to the next level and use to travel.

Loved the personal breakdown of points vs. dollars. This is my struggle with my CS Preferred card. Something in my spirit just doesn't sit right with paying more in the portal vs. in cash. Usually, I judge it off a $100 difference but this is a better strategy. I've been considering my next card so I took tons of notes. Thank you!!

My problem with this strategy is two. First with airlines, I typically do not know which airlines would offer the best deal. So you may start accumulating points on united to exchange for a $1000 ticket, then Philippines airline comes in and offer a $700 flight. So you end up not using those points. When using points for hotel, usually only high end hotels allow that. I usually just stay in cheaper or boutique hotels which are cheaper. So in the end I find myself spending less if I buy ticket and hotels with cash and using points as statement credits than to use the points directly to purchase.

My question is could you explain more how to close cards when your churning credit cards without it affecting the length of your credit card history?
@Erika2
@Erika2 2 года назад
Thank you! The best way when you can is to downgrade the card. Also for the credit card history, this is why you always want your first card to be one with no annual fee--because you'll want to keep it open forever (since that will serve as your credit card that you've had open the longest)

In the last example it just didn't make sense to do all that and then still have to pay cash cuz the points were not enough. But I totally understand why you would want to travel sign up bonus points. I like my cash back cards. I just redeem them straight to my account bank account and then transfer them to my money market account for compound interest. That's the easier for me. If I can't buy the ticket cash then I prefer not to spend on a trip. Although, the sign up bonus really was a good tip. As long as the bonus itself can cover for the flight I need and or offset my out of pocket expense. :)

@MarkReese
@MarkReese 2 года назад
Hey man - For the most part, closing a credit card can be ok in many situations. Credit history from a card account that has been closed still remains on your official credit report for seven years. The part that could potentially hurt in the short term is if by closing an account you lose a significant amount of your overall credit. That could drive up your overall utilization, and your score down. However, if you've already have more than enough credit to cover your monthly expenses to where they take up a small portion of your credit lines, then closing a card often has very little effect ✌ Does all that make sense? 😃💳

I tried to do the credit card churning with American Express Gold Delta card back in 2020. They tried to catch me though. They said ok, you haven't made it to your year yet and we will take all of your miles and bonuses that you earned. I was like for real? They were like yes lmao. So I stayed with them and then I never closed the account. Its 2022 and still have the account. I have spent at least !10k this year in flights and there really hasn't been any benefit in it. I got a whole bunch of miles which is cool and that I have used credit toward flights. I am looking at flying Qatar airlines to gain status so that I can eventually get upgrades to their suite class. I am looking at Chase Sapphire which I believe will transfer all of Avos points to Qatar. I have to double check though but I'm tired of these American Airlines. They are not the best.

@@Erika2 exactly! Yes, I caught the 100k at the tail end by physically going into a Chase Bank :). Also, a lot of my travel is domestic in the US, so Chase is my go-to. I know this isn't the case for you so it wasn't in your video, but I take all my other Chase points and transfer to the Reserve for the 1.5x travel bonus :)

My card has a annual fee, though there are perks. Mostly, I keep it for the free* auto insurance on rentals, free high-end airport lounge access (which if you travel a lot is a MUST HAVE), polite international 24 hour support, waived international ATM fees, etc. It is all about how it fits into your life. If I didn't travel internationally often, I would probably go another route. I easily make my money back at the airport lounges alone. They offer a quiet place to sleep, most offer full hot meals or a buffet, showers and the like (at the cheap lounges, you make get a communal bowl of pretzels and a well worn chair... but they are quieter than being in the terminal).

Great video! Quick question: When canceling your credit cards before the year end is up so you don't get hit with the fee again, you need to spend all the points before you cancel, correct? Also, do you ever have any issues canceling?

You can transfer your points to the new credit card. There are limitations as to which cards you can transfer though, for example when closing the amex preferred rewards card (which has an annua fee) you can only transfer the points to the amex rewards card (doesn't have an annual fee) so they won't be lost

Great video! Let's mention that annual fees, late fees, statement fees, interest charges, and all that other crap are ways financial institutions like to keep their hand in your pocket! I would highly recommend looking for interest-free cards with no annual fees for 3-year terms and switch to another after the term expires. You really have to have self-control if not there's a strong possibility of biting off more than you can chew. Credit card companies depend on people who overspend (they pay millions to study people's habits). JUST BE CAREFUL and pay off your card EVERY MONTH!

Thank you Erika, this was super useful.I also have Chase Sapphire Preferred. In your example, when deciding the cents/mile, you compared both for Singapore Airlines. What if there was another airline which was cheaper? How can you compare miles across different airlines then?

This was a very informative video! One thing I’m confused about is that I thought closing credit cards negatively impacts your credit score?? How do you get away with opening and closing so many credit card accounts without it impacting your score?
@jadedragonapothecary9753
@jadedragonapothecary9753 2 года назад
I think she mentioned that closing your FIRST credit card would be the only one that negatively affects your credit score, because you want to have a longer credit “age”

I think it is with enough of a cushion it doesn’t drop it that much. Practically it’s rare to need a score over 700

Hi Erika I just found your channel! Great videos I live in Europe, Netherlands so not everything is applicable here but it’s worth to check it out. I was curious about why you even care about the value per point. I mean why would you spend 500$ if you can just throw in your points? Am I missing something or is it just a personal decision because you will rather use them on something else then? Thanks a lot :)
@Erika2
@Erika2 4 года назад
Hi Marvin, Thank you for watching the video! I love the Netherlands--I've been there once and hope to go back. Good question. I think value per point is just a personal decision, because I want to make sure I'm "spending" the points wisely, so that I have enough there when I REALLY need them. Example: I had to go to a funeral last year, and of course I had less than 1 day notice. When you're buying flights for cash with 1 day notice, they are usually SO expensive because airlines take advantage of people who are in a pinch and need last minute flights. I think the flights were $500 each way (when they are usually $100 each way). But, I looked at what it would cost for points, and it was the same price is always is for points. So, I used the points. If I didn't have enough points saved up because I'd been using them all without having this "points value system", I would've had to pay $500 cash. Does that explanation kind of make sense? Sorry, a bit hard to explain.
