Regarding Gerard's comments about government's not putting the investment in sport. The people championing Tassie (especially the elite and organisations like Fox) are the first to complain about having to pay tax.
Such a small brain/commie (I know they’re the same thing) thing to say. Parties win and lose elections on whether they raise taxes on the common people. No one wants to pay taxes. Everyone complains. The top 1% pay 19% of the countries tax. The top 10% pay 55% of our tax.
They should have an expansion draft. That way, no team would be impacted more than any other and you wouldn't have to ruin the actual draft for years. Plus Tassie would actually be decent straight away.
Canberra and Ballarat are both Colder than Tasmania. There is also more rain in Ballarat and Canberra than Tasmania. Canberra has two teams that host NRL and Rugby Union matches without a roof. AFL is also played without a roof. Ballarat hosts AFL and A-League Matches again with no roof. How does it make sense that the Tasmanian Taxpayer must pay for a roof?
@@ComatosedpeanutBallarat is proof that the AFL does not care about the Facilities for the public. The AFL CEO sits in a box when he goes to Ballarat when the public sit on a hill in what is literally the coldest part of VIC with no protection from the Rain and Wind. The AFL is only making an issue of a roof in TAS so they can justify delaying the team for another 5 years. This Allows the Kangaroos and Hawks to enjoy another 5 years of Taxpayer handouts in TAS. Wake up do you really think the AFL cares about facilities for the common person?
Two points, why only 23,000 seats….. isn’t the roof their because of the freezing Tasmanian winters…. Seem to recall watching a game a few years ago when it was either single figures or 0 degrees…. + to attract other major events to Tassie like major Music Artists.
The thing is that Tasmanians play AFL. AFL isn’t huge in Queensland, and has to compete with Rugby in NSW as well. Tassie has lots of people playing AFL, so, it’s not as dire as people think.
@@jimmyriddle5246 🫵👍😂🤣😂 You’re hilarious guy So true….. it’s Aussie Rules AFL is the league itself But still bro, you keen for a game of AFL??? You wana play AFL? Let’s play AFL?
Is it just me or this should be a nice win / win with Disney. Tasmanian Devil Disney could do some promos with the Tazzie Team. Disney could produce some short Tasmanian Devils cartoons wearing the Devils guernseys. Kinda like a blue thing. Really good cross promotion 👍
Gws have home finals and so would sun's if they ever make it, so yes tassie will. Geelong are just in an awkward position with the fact that it's only 1 hours drive from the MCG. But geelong should get home finals even if its vs Collingwood they derseve home field advantage with a 40000 seat stadium.
It’s tricky. Giants were rubbish but got a lot more draft picks than the suns and they developed them well so when they left, they got early draft picks in while contending, hence why they never go down. Suns did pay heavy for players and had no space
Picks in the National Draft should be the last thing the AFL go to. You wouldn't even need to touch the National Draft at all if they did a proper expansion draft.
get rid of the roof and make a 30,000 seat capacity. Because this club will out grow the intial plan. Look how Geelong got nearly 40,000 at Kardinia Park and it was electric
Tassie will be lucky to average 10k people per game. Currently they average 6k, and through hawthorn's glory years it was 8k. Waste of money. Play in the existing stadiums and upscale if needed.
Geelong has had 20yrs of dominance to get to the point where we fill 40k seat stadium. Back in the 90s when we were also very good there were often games that we didn't sell out 25k. 30k will be fine for Tassie. For all the hype about memberships they've achieved, I'd be interested to know how many are based in Tassie. I have one, but I'm a long time Geelong member. It was $10, that's far different to getting an actual season membership with them.
@jimmyriddle5246 Geelong is an example of what could be, similar population. Gold Coast, GWS, Nth, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Bulldogs would love to have the same level of support
@@jamesyoung4834 imagine how much "support" all those other clubs would have if it only cost $10 ! Hawthorn have over 70000 members now and it didn't cost them 10 bucks that's for sure
Why can’t the federal government just put in more? Tasmania deserves this but we don’t deserve the debt. The afl has never asked a state to build a stadium before
What a lie! Optus Stadium in Perth -- a $one billion+ 60,000 seat stafium -- was built and funded by the WA State Government with no Federal Govt money. Why is it good enough for WA to fund its own stadium but not the bludgers in Tasmania?
😄😄😄 The Tassie Devil is great but that 'thing' plastered on the front looks like a nappie. Who did they engage for this cluster .. same person who did the Lions original one with a cross-eyed koala bear 😄😄😄
If Tassie go after big money players like Gold Coast did they will shoot themsleves in the foot, they should follow gws game plan of getting young guns, like Phil Davis and Callan ward were.
Gerard needs to get a grip with his political statements. I love sport, but there are far more issues out there than just sport which require funding. To that end, it’s a ridiculous requirement that the Hobart stadium has a roof when it’s the 2nd driest capital city in the entire country. It’s such a double standard from the afl requiring this. Hopefully the Tas govt pushes back hard on this requirement and doesn’t let the afl strong arm them
There can't be 19 Teams! 18 works, 20 is too many. The Talent Pool will be smaller with an extra 1-2 Teams! Not to mention the Bye every Round if there is 19?
I guess Tasmania is having a bye during rival round. It's kind of self-defeating naming a football team after an entire state. Then there is the jumper design. Well done to the AFL Marketing team - you have botched another expansion club.
@@nathand4500 When they want a second club in Tasmania (every other state has two), what will they call them? Why name a football club after an entire state when state of origin is no longer a thing and every other club is named after a city or suburb?
How the AFL look to build out the team will be interesting. The way Freo was established had major issues. But then so did the Gold Coast. Being so reliant on the draft is very risky. GC put too much in having the best player lead a bunch of kids. They needed more experienced players in to start with. And the other issue with being so reliant on the draft is that some draft years are just not very deep for talent. GWS had better draft classes but also supported with better senior depth. I think the AFL almost needs to insert a rule that for the first season Tassie can get 1 player (contracted or not) from every AFL listed team. That will allow them to be far more competitive straight away, and also allow them to target experienced players in areas where prior draft classes are weak. But all that said, I think for the team to go ahead the AFL needs to change their perspective on having a new stadium. Looks like an incredible waste of money for a market that really can't justify such a project. The money being split over upgrades at Bludstone & Launceston would be a more practical option.
They should do to Tassie what they did for freo. Give them no extra picks, no extra players, no extra money or cost of living nonsense no advantages whatsoever and then tease them when they don't win a brisbane style plastic threepeat
i dont see how this team is even feasable. thats why the afl have the card up their sleeve that says, no stadium no team. where are the afl going to find a squad of players good enough to play afl football. we have floundering teams now, because there isnt enough talent to go around. the suns and gws drained the playing stocks considerable. you also need to find a team of players who want to move to tassie. how many young blokes are going to want to leave the mainland for cold sleepy tassie. no offense intended but the nightclubs of melb or any mainland city, verses hobart......,..,
1. If you enter the draft you have to go to the club who picked you. 2. That's the whole point of signing bonuses and a larger salary cap. The money going to be thrown at players is going to be too hard to say no to. My biggest issue is 19 teams means a rolling bye which is stupid and unfair. Would much rather a bye mid or late season the day round 4. Also to the teams at the bottom of the ladder when they come in good luck.
same arguments played out in 2011 and 2012 with the gold coast and GWS. Read your history books. Look at what Geelong have done. Tasmania is actually developing particularly Hobart and people are moving from the other states out of cities.
TOO MAY TEAMS ! Look back in 10 years not 20 ! So if Tas are good who are not ? Those few franchises will the struggle and lose money and become unviable. Then what ? LOL
