👉🏻UPDATE 4/19/24👈🏻 The yarn hack is to pair your velvet yarn with Herrschner’s Afghan Yarn which is a 2 weight. It blends in seamlessly and makes it much smoother and a little sturdier. I would appreciate your patience with my editing in this video, it’s an older one and I didn’t have a lot of experience filming yet! I’m a WIP-work in progress 😊 Thank you for understanding!

I hope you do try it again Denise! And please let me know how it goes for you. Yeah, I think the Afghan yarn is perfect because of how many colors are available and since it’s a weight 2, it’s not very noticeable at all. But it gives it just enough structure to hold together better.

Yes, on both the hat and bow scrunchie. I love the velvet yarn and have made several garments with it. But you definitely have to wash it on gentle. I put the item into a pillow case to stop it from interacting with other items being washed. Also laying flat to dry helps. I made a cardigan for a friend. Her husband tossed it into the wash with a ton of other items. Then he tossed it into the dryer. It grew into this mess of loops. It looked like a cat got its claws stuck in it and pulled for dear life! Needless to say, it could not be salvaged. I tried to frog it, but it was so knotted up it ended up being a total loss. Looking forward to trying your tip.

I've had some disasterous results with Premier Parfait yarn (a yarn that I initially loved and bought a lot of). Then I did a blanket in DCs that didn't survive a handwashing. Working in SCs is about the only thing that stopped the worming for me. I ended up giving most of it away, and my cat is enjoying the blanket with the worming yarn. 🐱

How well does this technique do in the wash. I don’t crochet loom knit but I’ve been trying to find any technique I can to prevent worming as I love working with velvet yarn. So far I’ve tried working with thicker yarn. A smaller cage looms to make sure that the stitches are tighter together. But you can’t always find a really small gauge looms for some of my projects, so how well does your technique of combining velvet and regular yarn do in the wash, just in case I wish to sell hats made with this technique at a craft show. I don’t want my projects falling apart as soon as any potential customers get them home. And want to wash them
@ShannonTalksYarn
@ShannonTalksYarn 6 месяцев назад
That’s so hard because I feel like you can’t always trust other people to follow washing instructions. I don’t even trust my family lol! So here’s what I can say, most velvet yarns are more particular than the afghan yarn. A lot of them are hand wash, no dry. And the afghan yarn can be washed. I just don’t trust the drier for anything I crochet……. I would think if you labeled your washing instructions to the more delicate if the 2 yarns you would be ok. I had someone tell me they used 2 very different yarn types together and they washed/dried the blanket and the yRna shrunk at different amounts so it was not good. But again, I think gentle wash and lie flat to dry, is usually a safe bet. Hope this helps!

Hi Shannon, Thank you so much for this wonderful idea! I love the look and feel of velvet yarn, but despise the looping, etc! Question: If my crochet pattern calls for #4 velvet and I add the Herrschners, do I have to adjust my pattern? How would I figure that out?
@ShannonTalksYarn
@ShannonTalksYarn 6 месяцев назад
Hi Deborah! You’re very welcome! In my experience the Herrschner’s Afghan yarn didn’t really make any difference in overall size. It’s a 2 weight yarn so it didn’t really add any bulk at all. For the sake of experimenting I did pair velvet yarn with a worsted weight yarn and it didn’t work at all lol. It was way too bulky and definitely showed up as 2 separate yarns. And really any 2 weight yarn would work, I just really like the price and feel of herrschners. If you are worried, I would swatch up a square and see if it still matches the gauge the pattern calls for. If the pattern doesn’t call for a gauge, (if it’s not a wearable and size doesn’t matter) I wouldn’t worry about it changing anything! I hope that wasn’t an info overload!! Or if it doesn’t make sense let me know! 😃
@user-ct1kd9xn7c
@user-ct1kd9xn7c 6 месяцев назад
Thank you so much Shannon. That really helps. I am making a throw, and wondering what effect adding the Herrschner's afghan to the pattern might have?
@ShannonTalksYarn
@ShannonTalksYarn 6 месяцев назад
Since it’s a throw blanket, even if it made it incrementally larger, I wouldn’t worry about it. Most people size blankets carry from the pattern anyway, due to everyone using a different tension while crocheting. As long as you are using a color that matches (or closely) you shouldn’t really see it unless you’re looking for it. But it will feel a little more stable instead of so limp. It’s not a huge difference but it’s enough that it feel more structurally sound to me. If you’re unsure, I would just crochet up one swatch with and one swatch without and see which works better for your project! Please keep me posted! 😃

How is velvet yarn different from Chenille Yarn? Or velour? Question aside; Shannon, I love your channel and would watch if you read the county Platt book!

I would say pretty much the same as velour and same as the DT Just Chenille yarn. But I have seen some yarns that are called chenille but seems more like blanket yarn. @ShannonTalksYarn
@ShannonTalksYarn 10 месяцев назад
@codeybrinton1702 It varies a little when I make them, based on the yarn, but I like them kind of stiff to hold the shape. I usually use a size smaller hook than it yarn calls for. If it’s a worsted yarn I usually chain about 16. Then SC in each row, chaining one at the end of each row. I usually do about 10 rows. Just based on how the rectangle looks. Then I SC all the way around it creating a nice border edge. I do put 3 SC in each of the corner stitches to define them better. At this point I wrap yarn around the middle to sinch in the middle and make the “bow look”. I just wrap it right till it looks full enough. (I hope this makes sense!) You can just sew it onto a hair tie or barrette.
