I wanted an easier way to carry my surfboard two miles to the beach, so I built a trailer that tows behind my bike. This video shows the construction of the “mk.2” trailer with a few improvements on my original, like a better hitch, and super-easy board mounting/removal! The cart is fabricated from ½” PVC pipe and 1/8” steel bar stock and is a good weekend’s build.
I built my trailer at the Santa Barbara Hackerspace - If you live nearby, come check out the ‘space on any Saturday!
Parts list:
3x10’ ½” Schedule 40 PVC
3’ bar 1/8”x3/4” steel bar
2x6’ ½” foam pipe insulation
10 ish 1-1/4” drywall screws
6’ ish paracord
3 hose clamps
1 ¼” bolt and nut
Tools list:
Drill or drill press
Hacksaw
Heat gun
Vise and hammer
(optional) grinder
(optional) welder

If you do this again (and I haven’t read all comments so sorry if this is a repeat), you can fill the pipes with sand before heating. This will ensure that you can retain the rounded shape. You can also make a ‘mold’ with scrap wood and nails to get consistent shapes. Nice job on this! I’m going to try to adapt for a small sailboat.

Nice work, dude! I admire your attention to detail. You could make the frame stronger by using larger diameter pipe. You wouldn't even notice the extra weight. There are at least 3 play lists on You Tube with 1960s surfer music. You could add some classic surfer music to the video. That would be a nice touch. Happy Surfing!

3/4 inch PVC pipe is much stronger. Also using glue up "tee" and elbows will increase the strength and rigidity.

i dunno i'm pretty impressed with how little his heat bends were deflecting... one unbroken pipe probably has its merits.. fittings are more money and bulky too. tor some pretty mickey mouse stuff, it comes together pretty awesome for the price! a million times better than the one i haven't built yet!

In the old days the idea was to fill the pipe with sand and plug each end to stop it creasing.

Great video and ingenuity! I would definitely done it a bit differently as some of the other commenters, but am glad you did it this way and shared it with us so we could see it from another perspective. Kudos!!

I'm amazed you got away without building forks for the wheels! Bicycle axles are not designed to be cantilevered. You may find the axle bends, or the nut stripping and pulling off eventually. I guess that's a no big deal if you just get another free set of wheels!

Seriously though ...given how you're speaking in this video, have you ever given thought to getting a job when in comes to Instructional Videos. Your grammar, articulation, and expression is sublime. The trailer concept & instruction is great as well. But HOW you conducted the video, your voice is soothing & calm, yet you are direct & eloquent :)

One of the better DIY tutorials I've seen. Well done. About that long stretch of PVC connecting to your seat post... I'd be interested to see how long before that section fail. I like the overall design but would run a steel bar through that long pieced to make it more durable. Would hate to drop a surfboard or SUP on the ground if that long stretch of PVC snaps!

Glad you liked the video! I can say that the long pvc arm does bend a bit over time, but I’d guess (I hope?) it will show signs of cracking before failure. PVC is a whole lot more brittle than something like ABS though - if you wanted to make any part of this design more rigid I’d upgrade from plastic to riveted aluminum. However the “axle” thing really does need to be steel. I started with an aluminum axle and it bent up a lot. Going over bumps has actually popped one of the welds on this cart since the video came out so although I know that weld wasn’t great, this thing takes much more of a beating than I expected it to just going a few miles to the beach...

If you fill the PVC with sand, it creates non creased bends

If you tape the ends with electrical tape filling the PVC with sand and packing it you won’t have a problem with creases.

I use ECKLA BEACH ROLLY - trolley for kayaking and sometimes whole weight of bags (kayak, equipment, food, water, sleeping system with tent, clothes) can reach 50kg. Pushing or pulling this weight for longer time even on flat surface should be easier. I am thinking to attach third wheel in front. Anybody got solution for that? thanks

Why not use the board as part of the trailer structure. Attach the axel directly on the board and the hitch attached to the other end
@AlphaPhoenixChannel
@AlphaPhoenixChannel 5 лет назад
I saw a SUP bike trailer that worked just like that before building the first one of these and it looked pretty effective. I’m pretty sure the ends attached to the board with suction cups or the like - I wasn’t convinced I could make something that I would trust to stick to the board, especially my foam-top, so I went with a complete frame. It also makes it easier to carry more than one board.

That's the most economical , most efficient, just mad me feel thankful I am no longer going to have to cast that bewildered doofy gaze towards my trusty schwinn steed any longer, thank you Alpha Phoenix, also I truly love the logo and name , I'm jealous and feel like that name should've been a daily speech routine of mine , knowing she's my favorite character of all super power people, I naturally adorn a crown of a rare red (Golden like in color) fairy mane , some mistake it as my beloved Phoenix herself stopping by to caress her handsome idiot each day. And of course she and I are both alphas, of course she is 100% of her endless lifetime, and I am only allowed to say it when she's not around. But yes you have been a revelation and I feel much closer to what the true meaning of alpha or pheonix must mean. Thank you

I insert an old shower cord inside the tube before bending, that's avoiding the crease.
@AlphaPhoenixChannel
@AlphaPhoenixChannel 6 лет назад
good idea! I've also tried filling the pipe with sand but it's kind of a pain and takes a long time to get hot.
@telemachin
@telemachin 6 лет назад
@@AlphaPhoenixChannel the sand doesn't work... I tried. A shower cord from the dumpster.... I'm planning a video for my bike trailer, that's homemade and lightweight, under 7kilo, made of plywood and fiberglass. My first prototype was made of PU foam and fiberglass, and was a failure. Right now i'm having troubles with the arm.

Nice Idea ! Attaching the Wheels with only with one side nutted seems weak ...... Have they stayed strong or bowed from the Weight ?
@AlphaPhoenixChannel
@AlphaPhoenixChannel 4 года назад
That part is pretty sturdy if you include the little welded triangular brace that stops the wheel plates from bending. So far the most fragile thing is the pvc itself - if you hit a curb at speed and roll the cart you can crack some plastic

@@AlphaPhoenixChannel TY for the Response . I'm planning to build a trailer for my Inflatable Kayak with some old bike wheels and 1/4" plywood ... but am stuck on how to get nice sturdy wheels . Glad to hear your trailer is still going ! Cheers !

Im currently having an issue, ive built many racks but none work because i have a fiber glass 9' board, i was wondering if your board is foam? Because mine would probably be too heavy for the trailer
@AlphaPhoenixChannel
@AlphaPhoenixChannel 4 года назад
Yeah mine is a foam top. If you want this design to be stronger, I’d use thicker pipe and fittings instead of heat gun for the 90 degree corners. This can carry 2-3 foam top boards but I do occasionally need to repair it when a pvc member snaps (typically at a bend)

How long was the actual time that it took to make this realistically
@AlphaPhoenixChannel

I think this was just a weekend build - maybe even a one day build for like 95% of it - I don’t remember specifics but if you’ve got access to the right tools the actual amount of work you need to do with them is small
