A 50$ budget is in my opinion best for these kind of episodes as I feel like 25$ excludes some strategies, because they require some cards which are just to expensive for a 25$ budget. I wouldnt go much higher though you get a functional deck for 50$ and everything more gives room to very much non-budget cards.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again every time y’all talk about mana bases: Every commander deck with two or less colors (and three color decks with green) can be built with no issues using only basic lands!!
@MTGGoldfish
@MTGGoldfish Год назад
I think that's only partly true. If you build a two color deck with a manabase that's something like 19 Islands and 19 Plains you'll have both colors in your opening hand something like 75% of the time. I think if you are playing casually and your playgroup lets you mulligan until you get a playable hand it's fine and it does help keep the budget done, but I would say playing only basics probably causes less issues than people think, but it still causes issues some percentage of the time.
@lorpuz4664

My personal favorite very low budget decks are mono black. Varragoth swamp combo or Korlash Voltron. You don't need any pump equipment, just utility and black has some under rate pump spells and enchantments that give like +3/-1 but since Korlash grows with your landbase and has instant speed regeneration he can be hard to deal with.

One of the very few opinions I don't agree with Seth on is that poison counters need to be set to 20 in commander instead of 10. It needs to be 10. There are exponentially many more ways to deal 120 normal damage, whereas there's only a select few amount of ways to deal poison. Having to deal 60 poison in an all-in creature aggro deck in a format of board wipes is incredibly dubious. Setting poison to 20 doesn't mean you die less to poison as an individual. It just means the poison player never gets to win, and everyone's strategy should have a decent enough chance to win in Commander.

We have a hyper budget format in our playgroup, every card has to be under 50 cents, and I would say it sometimes feels too restricting and stops you from being able to play the few slightly more expensive cards that can be engines for the deck that make it sing. So I think that $50 for a deck is a good sweet spot, allows you to play slightly more powerful which can also maybe make the game not take as long haha

Changing the budget from episode to episode allows you to keep it fresh and keep exploring the tiers of budget 3. I think ~$50 is the ideal Budget Build option. 50 bucks is cheap, reasonable, and obtainable for almost anyone playing MtG, but has just enough wiggle room to let you splurge here and there on some cool cards. It's also generally around where your basic precons will usually float around, being between $30-$60ish on average before any big price jumps, so I think it's a relatively solid price point. I think once you break $100 it stops feeling like you're on a budget anymore. I know plenty of people spend way more on their decks, but I think once you reach that $80-$100 point you start getting out of the point where you could just casually snag the decklist to try out without feeling bad if it doesn't feel good to play.

I’m gonna be honest after these last couple games maybe Skullwinder is the card that needs to go. It’s just enabling repeat boardwipes that stretch the runtime. It’s not too powerful or anything but I think it’s the most likely culprit for the two and a half hour games.

I think because of popular commander is now and the general lift in cost as a result, budget commander around $50 would still be really good!
