nice sounding bows there! sounds like a good price point too. i think a comparison like this also shows that, for $250 you really do get a lot of bow for very little money!

Very interesting comparison. My main bow is a Kuhnla, which I like a lot. It's one of the shop bows. According to St4ve at String Emporium, the only differences between the shop and the master bows are cosmetic. I also have a Finale. For anyone watching, the lower end Finales are now $365, and the upper end brown weave is $400. I picked up one of the latter. It is a very good bow, though it is not nearly as good as the Kuhnla. I keep it in it's case in my car, just in case. I've had to break it out a couple of times, and it really performs very well in the orchestra rehearsal situation.

Other then the first part of the quick fire, I have some definite favorites, and was surprised I could hear the differences a good part of the time. My favorite was the ipe overall (hey, the deck on my house is made of that!! Super heavy wood!), with... believe it or not... the CF Finale as my second favorite! With one exception, which is the first part of the shootout. That first up and down on the A string, the CF Finale sounded thinner and more "tinny" than the others, if that makes sense. After that, I thought it sounded really good. Maybe I am just at that place where I like CF... been playing a Vingobow CF stick since ~ late 2019, and been pretty happy with it!

Videos like this always worry me. I feel like I can't hear the difference and when I have to make the choice myself for a purchase I won't know what im doing.

Yeah, the differences in sound are pretty subtle on this one. One of these days I need to do a comparison with an entry level fiberglass bow-the sound difference would be a lot bigger with that!

Honestly alot of the time you really cant hear a difference. And even then, the sound will change every time you get a rehair. A good idea is to make sure you can play some fundamental bow strokes - long tones legato, quick on the string stroke and spiccato, and see how well a new bow suits you doing those things. But honestly, i've been playing for a long-ish time professionally and i still use a £100 bow. So does Edgar Meyer. The only other bows i've played with that i thought 'oh i really like that' were like, 250.

Jason! I am a German bow guy (novice) and was wondering whether you have done similar spectral analysis comparisons between French and German grips (does Patrick Staples make German bows too? -- I could not tell from a quick, cursory look at the Instagram link)

Patrick does make German bows! I should do some comparisons with German and French one of these days-good idea!
