Question of the day: What are your tips for sewing invisible zippers? TBH they're still a pain in the butt for me so I would love to hear any tricks you have :D
@davidsueellenking456
@davidsueellenking456 4 года назад
Sorry April, no real tricks for invisible zippers. Do you have an invisible zipper foot, looks likes it might help. Take your time & practice, practice, practice😻
@chauntem.8841
@chauntem.8841 4 года назад
I use them on sofa pillows...1st sewing project outside of normal hand sewing repair items. Tip:After the second one I found it much easier to use Heat Bond Tape to hold it in place. Use as wanted in specific spots or the same length as the zipper after you're good with its position.

I fuse a fusable interlining strip alone edge of the seam before sewing the zipper. Its a trick I learned from the garment factory I interned at. I use a invisible zipper foot and sew it on industrial sewing machine. Also when there is seams like waist seams I sew one side first, close the zipper mark the wasit point on the other side of the zipper and pin that point to waist seam and sew that side. Also when closing the bottom of the zipper I use a one side foot (left or right ) and sew close to the zipper joining. These tips give me store brought quality zippers everytime. All these techniques are from the factory I before said.

It would be interesting to know how much the finished pieces actually cost at the end. The $3.- are just the start. There is the draping fabric, thread , zipper and so on. It differs from outfit to outfit. I think it would be good to know the actual cost
@hopeahooper
@hopeahooper 4 года назад
Agreed! I want to know the end overall cost!
@sunshinesmiles5386
@sunshinesmiles5386 4 года назад
Normally zippers are $3, thread probably $.50 because you don't normally use a whole spool. Sealing fabric depends on where you get it. I normally thrift sheets for like $3 and get a couple square yards. Costs can change depending on where you get them, but those are my estimates normally :)
@lestranged

Zipper prices can vary widely. If you buy single zippers at JoAnns, full price, they can be a lot. But they do go on sale often. Also you can salvage zippers from garments that you are thrift flipping, you can buy zipper tape by the yard and add your own stops and sliders (colors are usually limited tho). Also April could be getting her zippers in the garment district of LA where they can be very cheap. I've also ordered zippers in bulk at a dry cleaner supply website and the prices are less than half of JoAnn's price. I even salvage the zippers from the plastic 'case' thing that a new comforter or blanket comes in. They are long and sturdy.

Hi April- Now that I watch your videos, my visits to the 2nd chance shops are WAY more pleasurable! I’m timid in my sewing and it’s refreshing to watch you work w/confidence! A video that I would like to see, is the making of one of the old fashioned patterns that I see on Pintrist and then see it being sewn into the actual fashion design (maybe a riding coat, or tapestry vest, or one of the high-necked shirts w/ the pretty sleeves...something you can put a bit of a modern twist to). Keep the videos coming and Congratulations 🍾 on your engagement!

When you are cutting out your new pieces try to place them closer together. If you have tons of fabric that’s fine but you are wasting fabric that you might need. Love to watch your videos they are really fun. I have been a seamstress for decades and I love doing things like this. It is great that you are encouraging people to alter rather than just throw out.
