@@MomentousArts Cheap condensers tend to put a lot of emphasis on high end. You'll normally see a large bump around the 7K to 14K range and probably some other weird peaks and valleys between 2K and 5.5K. Typically, better mics have a flatter response, up to a point.
@MomentousArts
@MomentousArts Год назад
@@ChangoFrett There's few "cheap" condensers from reputable brands that do this. What you're talking about is not a cheap condenser, but a flawed condenser. There are in fact "expensive" condensers with "vintage" branding or EQ switches that also emphasize the high end. There are a lot of mics that are flat and sell in the range of $30-$70. Nothing about the U87 is special. It is in fact not a very good mic if your goal is to have flat, accurate, transparent audio. It is a conversation piece if anything, and not a very good one unless all of your friends are audio geeks.

Man it’s a bit like comparing phone cameras to pro cameras. They can capture the same thing to an play degree, but the level of detail captured when you zoom in is completely different. The cheap mic can pick up the source fairly okay and I’m sure on some sounds it’ll be totally fine, but will it fit in a mix as easily? Will it take compression and EQ nicely? Does it peak super easily? They’re all things that play a role and that’s why the Neumann is 100x the price.
@MomentousArts
@MomentousArts Год назад
You said all this stuff but clearly don't understand how compression, EQ work, or what causes a peak, lmfao. No mic is going to take compression poorly, or be harder to EQ if you have any idea how to do either. Peaking is literally something you can avoid if you passed math in kindergarten and has nothing to do with the neumanns price. The neumann is expensive because they are made special with antiquated processes that aren't used anymore as they are generally just bad practices for transparent audio reproduction.
@oisinfitzgerald5401
@oisinfitzgerald5401 Год назад
@@MomentousArts Sure you can get it to work. I spent hours with my first Rode condenser (NT1A I think) trying to make it not sound boxy, thin, over-compressed, and I was left with this feeling that maybe I should just get a higher end mic. Which I did. The mic suits my voice more for one, I find it easier to EQ and compress tastefully rather than just struggling to make the source sound good. I get where you're coming from, there is no such thing as a bad mic, but man the last one just didn't sound good, and it felt like nothing I did could change that. Whatever about the price, I like the mic on my voice. Do tell me about the 'bad practices' you mentioned. I'm genuinely curious. And yes. I know how EQ and compression work and what causes a peak. Very helpful.
@MomentousArts
@MomentousArts Год назад
@@oisinfitzgerald5401 No mic is easier to compress than another. Anyone that knows what compression is is going to be very bewildered by your comment. Comparing anything to a Rode NT1-A is also a mistake, an MXL V67G would have been better for less money. Bad practices include transformers as one example, there is an inherent distortion on mics with a transformer. If you care about accurate reproduction of audio, there is no reason to be using a mic with a transformer. "Vintage" sound draws in a lot of people who misattribute that tone to anything but said distortion. When your hardware is already distorting the very nature of how the sound is recorded before it even reaches the digital stage you will never have a perfect, (relative to what's available) recording.
@oisinfitzgerald5401
@oisinfitzgerald5401 Год назад
@@MomentousArts It was an analogy man. Maybe it missed the mark, but surely you get where I'm coming from? I merely meant the cheap mic I had didn't reproduce the audio anyway nearly as well in the setup I recorded through. In the exact same parameters, the Neumann knocked it out of the park. In regards to that second statement, I disagree. Rode NT1A, while I found it frustrating, is still affordable, accessible and tonnes of people get decent results with them. Granted, it's more expensive than it used to be. It's still a condenser mic, I don't see why you can't compare it to other condensers?? I do care about accurate reproduction of audio. I also care about getting a good sound. To my ear, the Neumann gets the sound I'm after. Personally I don't really care for the "vintage" thing and I agree. A lot of people don't really understand that there's way more going on in that vintage sound and companies use that to their advantage to market gear. That is not why I bought a U87. I bought it because I had the opportunity to get one on the cheap (well... cheaper) and I liked the sound of it on my voice.
@MomentousArts
@MomentousArts Год назад
@@oisinfitzgerald5401 Rode NT1A is fair enough if someone never had a pro mic before. It's going to sound good compared to a non LDC. However, for the cost it's coupled with. There are much better microphones for much less. For the price tag that the U87 carries. Sometimes as high as 3695 it will be a waste of money both for prosumers and legitimate professional studio engineers. Sound treatment is what most people are missing. If you can find a mic that has low manufacturing tolerances for the frequency response results then you have the "best" mic.

any tips for mixing vocals with a cheap mic to sound better?
@carpentemusic
@carpentemusic Год назад
@@bf4lvr figure out what frequencies are missing on your microphone vs an expensive one you like. Either find the frequency curves online or borrow a good mic you like to cross reference yours vs it, using a spectrum analyser and recorded wave files. I like TDR Nova as a free one that has great multiband dynamic eq with sidechain capabilities. This way you can see the spectrums and boost/lower your microphone recording to gently match the borrowed microphone recording. Regardless, even with a high quality microphone, you'd have to EQ vocals. Seems cheaper mics lack clarity in the highs, something to consider. I do a lot of pop and now house music production, and cut a lot of the lows in vox, focusing on upper mids to highs. Backing harmony vox almost always has most lows removed so they never overshadow the lead. One trick with vocals is to temporarily mute lows and highs to hear just the mids and see how well that sounds by itself. TDR Nova has a solo type feature to do this, and you can adjust from within that mode to expand or contract. The theory is the mids represents almost all listening conditions across most speaker and environments, thus mixing accordingly this way allows more accuracy/consistency in reproduction. I know I said cutting bass in vocals is one of my things now, but depending on what you require, at least consider sculpting it with EQ. The idea is to have vocals fit better and stand out in the frequencies they shine. No one song has a one fits all solution. I do know that you want to have highs that are present and balanced, as intelligibility and clarity are important. Hope something in this info dump helps.
