Dearest Friends :-D this is the one, friends, especially in North America, have asked me about. The AT-LPW40WN is finally here, and how does it fare against the Pro-Essential 3? The Essential 3 is current and pretty new too, only launched less than 2 years. It sports the OM10 cartridge. I have bought the pretty white gloss version.
AT-LPW40WN $300, Essential 3 $350.
Dear Friends, you will also get to see Mr Jerry, who flew in from the States early last month, to meet up with me, Jerry knew me from my channel, and chatted me up a couple of months ago, signalling to me his trip to Singapore :-D. We met up for the first time, in The Adelphi HiFi Mall as he had chosen!
Funan Mall is a newly constructed mall, just opposite of The Adelphi. It was demolished just two years ago, and this new one is built from the ground up again. From Basement 2 level to Level 7, the Funan Mall sports rock climbing walls, lots of F&B, a big hall for Gaming Competitions!!!!! :-D, Tech stuffs, and a rooftop green area with innovative self-sufficient ecosystems. The Audio Technica Concept retail store is one of the main tenants on Level 4.
The Esplanade is one of my frequent haunts, especially in this month of July, where there is the….JAZZ Festival :-D !!!!! Alexandra Hsieh and Mario Serio are in this video.
Some snippets of Mokobaby and Mimi-chan too :-D. They are so lovely and adorable!
We often bring Mokobaby to Kent Ridge Park on a hill on Sunday mornings.
Warmest Regards my dearest Friends and Buddies :-D
~ ian.
*Background
I am Ian and I reside in sunny Singapore. I love our Vinyl Community and Vinyl Music. Vinyl analogue playback is utterly blissful, and I want for fellow friends and buddies to engage in vinyl music for many, many years in their life, each vinyl buddy through their school life, through the hustle and bustle of daily work, accompany them through precious hours at home with their family members or in their hostel with their friends. Vinyl music is blissful, free of time smear, phase shift, pre-ring and post-ring that plagues digital playback. Vinyl buddies and friends can all attest to that. It is not warm in the “bassy warm” sense, it is not soothing in the sense that “everything gets smoothed out”. It is because it is analogue, very detailed, calm, invigorating, enthralling, dynamic, refreshing. In a word, blissful. Utterly :-D
I want for all to get the very equipment that will get us there. These equipment, I firmly believe, are present, and existent, even at affordable price points!..and I started off in Dec 2015 hunting out for them, selling off my own Rega RP6 (which my wife and I loved) to fund the first batch of cartridges for review: the 5 cartridges in Group A ($70-$80), and the 7 cartridges in Group B ($90-$130). Subsequently I told myself to set aside $500-$1000 per month from my monthly salary to buy equipment to review. My own money. Quite a hefty sum monthly, significant to me, as I am a salaried man. This is my commitment. I believe in every field, there are people who have to make the sacrifice to pursue their love for the greater good, and to serve, the community of friends. I have also downsized my car in mid-2017 so as to commit these monies to fund these projects. I totally, rigorously, and kindly reject all forms of donations, be they from friends, from retailers, from manufacturers. This is a hobby, and my teachers and advisors in life have advised me that to bring balance to life, and to be wholesome, one will engage in a livelihood (daily job or business) that earns the monies, and one will also simultaneously engage in a hobby/service in life that is non-competitive, non-monetarily-remunerative. My wife totally understands what I want to do for the community and she so kindly supports my decision and efforts. Vinyl music is a lovely hobby I hold dearly. Friends and buddies are my ultimate responsibility and my love. I want the very best for them, and to provide totally honest reviews. Moles exist in hifi forums, moles also exist from benefactors who donate. I do not want to remotely encounter any moles masquerading as benefactors donating to my cause, only to find out sooner or later that such donations were/are from certain manufacturers or retailers. Everybody will do things differently. I want to maintain my status as a common-folk, aspire always to adopt the Shokunin spirit: of spending the utmost diligent care, through unhurried work, never caring for returns, in perfecting their work for the community. The personal satisfaction of getting to the very best equipment in each price class to help all my lovely buddies and friends is, the only thing, in store for me :-D We toast to the joy and bliss of vinyl analogue music. Vinyl Music deserves our love and attention. Our listening. Our care.
Let's go, buddies and friends!!!
~ ian :-D

Glad to see a new video, always a treat. Especially TT shootouts. Gonna stick to my guns for the P1, even at a slightly higher retail than other regions. Feel like it’s a better -overall- value in the sub-$500 range.

Dear Buddy Dale, thank you for coming back to see me! :-D thank you for helping a few months ago, another fellow brother whom you had advised to try first; experimenting sticking a penny = 2.5g to the tonearm without throwing money first onto changing a heavier counterweight for his turntable!!! Thank you brother :-D!!! Great to see you and have your time with me again!!! Warmest Regards and hope you've had a good weekend! Rest well my friend :-D ~ ian.

@@HiViNywschannel The US dime (about 2.0 g) was a quick fix to make sure that a small added weight would be enough to balance a rather light cartridge (the now-discontinued Goldring Elektra reviewed on this channel). Pro-Ject provided a small metal spacer for their tonearm which provided a bit more weight and a lot more security.

@@HiViNywschannel Hi Ian and thank you so much for the detailed response. I appreciate very much. To answer your question about the my job and the Boston Hospitals is my pleasure. I do not actually work inside the hospitals like a doctor, an orderly or anything like that. But I do work with the hospitals from the outside/in. I take people 65 and over to their appointments to all of the major hospitals in Boston. They may be going for a certain medical issue, radiation, dialysis, etc... I work for the city that I live in and I pick them up at their homes or wherever they are living. A lot of them have no family left or relatives. So they depend on us to take them. It is a very rewarding job in many ways. I love to help people so that in itself gives me so much satisfaction. I also have a small landscaping business that I started a few years back. I only have eight houses but it keeps me busy. I don't have as much beach time as I did before. But I still get to swim and surf occasionally. I have not had much time to make videos this summer. But I will make up for the lack of videos come this fall. I hope that my subscribers remember who I am. {smile} OK Ian. Once again, I really appreciated sharing a little bit of my jobs with you. I truly appreciate you asking. Oh and thank you for offering to show me around Japan. I would love to visit your beautiful country but I probably will not be able to get out there for about ten years or so. I will extend the same to you and your wife. If you ever get to come here to Boston it would be my pleasure to show you both around the whole city. Thank you again for your continued friendship. It means the world to me. @@HiViNywschannel Thank you for the kudos and the family greetings, brother Ian! I got to talk with Mr. Peter Ledermann - The SoundSmith yesterday and am making arrangements to return the cartridge for replacement or rebuild. He will oversee it when he returns to town in early September. It was quite an honor to talk with him! In the meantime, I'm still staying up way too late at night enjoying the MP-150. With the old cartridge I was slowly increasing treble & decreasing bass...trying to make highs and lows sound better. All control are back to being flat once again with outstanding sound thanks to the MP-150. The less effective suspension on the Technics was picking up vibration from my sub-woofer. Never had that issue with the B&O. I just put a set of isolation pads under the sub and it improves things greatly. Not only did it cure the vibration issue at the turntable, it also made the sub less "boomy" and more detailed. I actually had to turn the sub volume up a little to hear detail better since the hardwood floor wasn't augmenting and distorting the sound anymore. Something I should have noticed before! I just assumed the factory isolation feet on the Definitive Technology Pro-Sub 1000 were adequate, but not on hardwood floors, evidently. Wifey and I send warm greetings! Our "zoo" sends greetings as well! African Grays: Skylar and Rebel, Senegals: Jack-Jack and Baboo, Cockatoo: Bobby Pomeranians: Abigail and Speedy American Eskimo Dog: Middy Boxers: Beastie and Bailey Kitty: Hugh All send their regards to your family as well! Dear Buddy Kris :-D !!! You are the first one i am telling here:-D!!! Here goes: - i have finally bought the KCC Scientific 1930 60Hz clock!!! just a month ago... - ...so that, i can finally run the lovely blue-coloured U-Turn Orbit I bought TWO years ago at the right speed!!! I, in fact, bought the AudioTechnica AT-LP120, the Pro-Ject Primary, the TEAC TN-300 and the U-Turn Orbit with Black1, two years ago, together, at great cost, to run the turntable shoot-out, but, because the Orbit runs at 110V 60Hz, i had to leave it out. - ..and not just because of the specific voltage of 110V and frequency of 60Hz different from the rest of the world: Europe. Britain, Asia, Australia, etc, the U-Turn Orbit comes at a great cost to anybody outside of North America shipping it via own courier services...expensive shipping fees, handling fees and import taxes all rolled into one. That goes the same for Fluance turntables. - Thus U-Turn and Fluance turntables cannot be applied in the same sentence with us outside of North America, choosing between ubiquitously distributed makes i.e. Rega, Pro-Ject, AudioTechnica, TEAC, etc.... - So finally, the U-Turn will be ready to do battle here, as i have gotten hold of the KCC Scientific 1930 60Hz clock to run the U-Turn, versus.... the latest Fluance turntables...should be the RT83(2M Red) and RT84(2M Blue). Dear Kris, thank you for your input and kinship always. Warmest Regards to you and Marissa. ~ from Miyako and i.

A nice review, as always and glad you realized the price difference of the P1 Vs the others in that review, but still put the P1 above everything, even today's winner, the AT table so good to know. :-) That all said, I, as I watched the review wondered if the Pro-ject was possibly handicapped by the OM cart it comes with? I have still, but not in use the Super OM-10 that once graced the Kenwood I still use all these years later and found the bass reasonably deep, but lacking mids but not so much the upper mids where it a definite bump there and thus came off strident/bright in my rig. Mind you, I was using at the time the Sherwood (mid 90's BPC era) receiver with its stock phono stage which didn't help matters any so I found myself at the time not playing vinyl much for a few years until I got the SHURE M97xE which evened out the sound from top to bottom despite being narrowish in the stereo separation and the quite rolled off top end and indistinct bass, even when I upgraded the phono stage before going with Grado for the cart. But the difference were very much obvious with this shootout that the Essential was middling, the AT much fatter and far more pleasing to listen to. Good job as always.

I wish Ian would make a comeback - his comparison videos are still some of the best on RU-vid. On that note, Audio-Technica’s step-up turntable, the AT-LPW50PB Fully, has been favorably reviewed in comparison to both the Rega P1 and P2, and thought to be better than the former, and just as good as the latter. The LPW50 has a better feature set for sure, IMO. Cheers!

Hi Ian, thanks for another great video. Enjoyed it very much like every time! I watched some vids about Fluance RT-8x TTs and also like them and i´m curious, especially about the RT-85. Unfortunately Fluance products are not available here in Europe :-( Importing from Canada boosts the very reasonable price point :-(

Dear Buddy Christoph!!! :-D great to see you! Enjoying your SL1210Mk2 AND MP110 plus your Mani soon!!! Thank you for coming to catch up with me again after a month!! The Fluance is OEM made probably by the same Hanpin company that makes the TEAC TN-300, Denon DP300F and Onkyo CP1050, etc :-D Nevertheless i will plan to have a Fluance up against a U-Turn asap. Yup, if it materalizes, both are of course purchased from my own pocket and never ever sponsored. I reject all sponsorships :-) so as to maintain 100% honesty to all of you my friends. You guys are the only people, the only reason i am making these projects and videos for. My only allegiance is to you friends and buddies. Warmest Regards and have a great Sunday :-D ~ ian.

Ian, I enjoy your your honest reviews of different componets. It is easy to distinguish the differences in sound between components in your videos. Where can I find information on your reference system (speakers, tt, phono preamp, cartridge, etc?)

Great Review, thank you! In NA prices have changed a bit, probably due to Covid and other supply chain issues. Currently the street prices are as follows, which I think makes a better argument for the AT. Also, the Essential III seems to be no longer available. The closest alternative from Pro-Ject is the T1. AT-LPW40WN: $350 (with phono stage) Pro-Ject T1 (closest alternative to Essential III): $450 (with phono stage) Rega P1: $595 The T1 certainly looks interesting looking at the features, but only a review will tell. Still it's $100 more than the AT. The Rega is a ~$250 delta. I am sure it is worth it, but that certainly would be a big consideration for newbies, especially since you will need to add a phono pre-amp of a quality that makes sense for the P1, which would add ~$150. In addition, you would have to assume that folks have the downstream components to actually hear a difference, which is not necessarily the case with entry-level audiophiles. Anyways, enjoyed the review. I got the AT for my 13-year old son and am glad it got the thumbs up.

Hi Ian! How are you, my friend?! This video couldn’t have come along at a better time, as one of my close friends is looking for a decent turntable. Thanks to you, I can now easily recommend the AT deck. He’s actually already purchased an MP-110, which I have no doubt will make the AT all the better. I’ve given him one of my old receivers and an old pair of KLH spkrs to use until he wants to upgrade, but he’s in for quite a treat with a new vinyl playback system. I’m probably just as excited as he is! 400+ comments on your last vid, and 20K subscribers! That’s so amazing, Ian. Many congratulations! 🙂👍 I’ll be able to say, “I knew you when”. lol I’m still in awe of the plethora of HiFi shops you’ve got in adjacent malls. I’ll have to come visit you in Singapore someday, or we could meet up to go record shopping in Japan next time you’re there. Thanks for another stupendous video, Ian. I know a lot of work goes into listening, taking notes, editing, etc. Talk to you soon, Ian! Your HiFi brother on the other side of the world, - Nick

Hallo, mein bruder!! Wow, 2 years! All I can say is that I’m very thankful and fortunate to have met you, and especially over our mutual love of vinyl & HiFi through your amazing channel! I have absolutely tried to get my buddy to go for a Rega, even if I’ve gotta take care of the difference. I just explained how much happier I felt he’d be buying the “better one” and not feel the need to upgrade in a year or two. He’s on a pretty tight budget right now though, cuz he and his wife just had a baby girl! Of course, if you ever travel to the US, the same applies 100%! Brooke says hello to Moko, btw! Haha!

Hay Ian! It's been too long, what's it been about a couple months since your last video! Good to see you again, Buddy! So far as the video, I can hear the difference with a "one piece " Bluetooth headset! That says a lot right there! But of course I've also listened to it with my proper gear!

Yes Buddy :-D!!! It has been 7 weeks! Apologies to you and all my friends... but i am sure you all will emphatize with me: My baby Moko suffered a ruptured right hind leg cranial cruciate ligament in late May, and finally arranged for a good surgeon to operate on her just in mid June. Two weeks thereafter, since early July, it has been a lot of travelling to bring her to the rehabiliation/physiotherapists' centre. Daily, a lot of work involved too to care for her and give her even more love and care. She is much better now :-) and feeling more positive, and even Mimi the Budgie cares for her! I made a postop bed and recovery bed for her, which you can see in the video. She will rest on it, and I can carry the whole thing around in the house so that she doesn't need to tire out after intensive exercises. She is much better now. Thank you!!! Hehhehh.... definitely easy to hear this one!!! The difference, indeed, is stark between the two decks here. Brother, thank YOU! for coming by to see me!!! Warmest Regards, ~ ian.

I like the AT turntable but the only drawback is slight hum in the right channel. The cart on the Pro-Essential 3 does have a bit of a scooped sound vs the AT. I wonder if you swap the carts on the turntables would it "follow" over to the other table or stay more or less the same?

Another well done review, and thankfully backs up my currently holding on to my P1. Still considering if I will add some Dyanamat to the underside of the plinth. I've not choice, but to keep my stereo rack near my RH speaker, and thinking anything I can do to mitigate the negative effects of the bad positioning, might be worth a try. Only two weeks ago, did I realise that Funan reopened, after I'd spent an afternoon roaming around The Adelphi. Need to go check it again, as I think I missed some of the audio outlets. And there certainly seems to be a sufficient number of coffee shops to keep my on my toes for an afternoon. However despite we having malls either dedicated or semi-dedicated to Hi-Fi, it's surprising that some brands still are not officially represented on our shores, despite what seems like a healthy market.

The Thorens never happened. After I won't the auction and paid, the seller refunded me my money and would not complete the sale. So it's the P1 for now, upgraded to its current state. Would be great to catch up at Funan or Adelphi some time.
