This is a FULL TOUR of my new apartment in Hanoi, Vietnam. I moved into this place mid-June, and have been absolutely satisfied!
It's a Studio apartment, in the Thuy Khue Ward of Tay Ho district, in Hanoi city. It's a very authentic Vietnamese neighborhood (meaning, not so many foreigners at all). Just the way I like it.
After viewing quite a few disappointing locations in my apartment hunting video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2_KyM7GMk0o.html), I was finally able to land this place, which really fit my style and daily living needs.
It is $350 per month, with one month deposit. It includes a secure parking cage for motorcycles, purified water service, high-speed WiFi, and a cleaning maid comes twice a week to clean the apartment. Electricity is separate and propane gas are separate.
I found this apartment while looking around the Hanoi Massive Housing Facebook group, so if you're looking for a place, I suggest checking out those groups first. There were a few with the same name, but all of them had thousands of members, so any one of them was good for listings of places.

Such a sweet little space! You can see the French influence still reflected in the fact that there is a wine rack. Also, the windows look like the windows in Paris. The terra cotta tiles remind me of France, too, both the ones on the roofs and the floor tiling. I think I would really enjoy Vietnam.

Thank you. ^^ My travel is a bit different from many others I've seen. Most people travel to 20 countries over the course of a few months to a year, then go back home. I'm literally moving to a country and just immersing myself to really get a sense of the culture and what not. I wonder where will be next after Vietnam? ^^ Thanks for commenting!

Yeah, definitely. This apartment building is aimed at foreign/expat clients, and all the tenants are foreigners. But I never see them, EVER. hahaha And also, in this neighborhood, I never see a single foreigner. It's really crazy, even though it is technically Tay Ho district. But it's right on the border with Ba Dinh district as well. Maybe that helps keep it more authentic Vietnamese. ^^

Thiện Tâm Hoàng It may be expensive by Vietnamese standards but it's dirt cheap by Western standards. I had an apartment in Chicago only a little bigger than this one and it cost me $1,600/mo in today's money after adjusting for inflation. And Chicago is one of the least expensive major cities in the developed world. A place like this in San Francisco or New York would probably cost about $3,500 a month, and even more still in London or Tokyo or Hong Kong.

I left that $350 apt because it was just too expensive, in regards to what apartments cost in Vietnam. You can rent a whole house for that price in certain areas. I love that bathroom! You just don't see places especially this affordable in the US. I have always wanted to travel and honestly could probably live extremely comfortable ony fixed income in some other countries! Like this for example! Thanks for sharing!!!

Thanks Roxanne! Yeah, this $350 is on the higher end of the spectrum, too! Most expats living here rent a room in a shared house for between $140 ~ $200 a month. Includes furnishings and usually once or twice weekly maid cleaning service. You can easily live and have a great quality of life in Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam! ^^

Yes, absolutely great natural light! Unfortunately, the construction situation behind the apartment never ends. That's why in the beginning of 2018, I moved out. I even broke my 1-year lease after only 7 months. I couldn't take all the construction going on at all hours of the night.

What's nice about this location is that there are many main roads nearby that cut through the city. From this area, it's about 20 minutes to most places in the city in any direction. Still job hunting. All the places I've been to were within 20 minutes from my house. ^^

I came here from another video about an apartment in Tokyo. The difference is amazing. From shoe box to sane living. I lived in China for 3 years and was able to have a nice place there. Unfortunately I had to put up with Chinese people, lol. The space looks big but you still have to deal with the weird apartment quirks of living there, like having a shower next to the toilet. You got a bathtub though which is pretty deluxe for Vietnam!

I'd say it was a score find, although I'm paying $150 more than the average expat in Vietnam. I'm looking to downgrade to a place in the $200 range. The extra $150 a month saved goes a long way in Vietnam. ^^

The lighting was definitely a major selling point. ^^ Even at night when I need to, all the lights inside are perfect. But to save on electricity, I only use 1 lamp for soft ambient lighting. Don't need much else. Simple living = win. ^^

It's cute and quirky Cory, I like it! You actually have a dryer, even though it's shared you're very lucky!!! And your neighborhood looks really nice and will be extremely quiet when the construction is finished. Plus you're close to Bryan and Cait so that's awesome!!! :^)

Thanks! Yeah, the only downside with 1 washer and 1 dryer is that it's just 1 machine for 7 different tenants. Several times I go up there to do a load of laundry, and all the machines are occupied. Kind of annoying. But not bad. It's peaceful and quiet. ^^ And yeah, looking on the map, actually Bryan and his family, plus Charly and Annie, are all very close by. Like a 15 minute motorbike ride. So cool.

Thanks Deborah! Actually, the place isn't as yellow as you think. The paint is an off-white, with a slight tinge of yellow. Same with the cabinets and stuff. But the light from outside really boosts that yellow feeling. If I could, I would paint this place a slightly different, less-yellow white. hehehe

If you're planning on staying in Hanoi for a long time, I recommend you to check out Sa Pa. Sa Pa is a town on top of a mountain and is about 5-6 hours away from Hanoi. It's personally my favourite destination. You can take a sleeper bus there for experience ( it's a lot cheaper than other types of transportation and there's wifi). It can get a bit chilly at night so bring a jacket. And whatever you do, don't buy or give anything to the tribe children (trust me. 100 of them will stalk you) :)

Now that I live here, I definitely want to visit there in the autumn. ^^ Is there any food or cultural thing I must experience in Sa Pa you can recommend?

Feed The Cory you should check out the street food there. They have a lot of grill food. I recommend trying the skewer with the round mochi like pieces I think local people call them mèn mén. Also try the Hmong massage/sauna where you can soak in the Dzao traditional medicines. There are a lot of places to visit near Sa Pa such as Lạng Sơn, Fansipan peak, Thác Bạc (Silver Waterfall) and Cổng Trời( Heaven Gate). Have fun and stay safe 😉

Thank you so much! While I liked the big space of this $350 place, it was just too expensive for one person like me. Also, 7 months of non-stop construction right outside my window drove me crazy so I broke my 1 year lease to move out to a better location, for a little bit cheaper, and so much quiet privacy at the new $300 rooftop place! ^^ Thanks for watching and commenting!

Are the floors heated, or is that not an issue in Vietnam? It's actually a very nice apartment. Great lighting all the time. And the bathroom isn't the typical style, which makes it more fun over time. I notice some people keep hanging on your divorce and when you are dating. They can't drop the drama. Don't worry about dating for 6 months or a couple of years. You don't need memories flooding into a new love life.

There is no floor heating system, like Korea has, here. Hanoi gets a mild winter, where it's cold enough you need to layer up, but not enough to warrant floor heating. Most apartment AC units also have heater function, mine does for sure. hahaha yeah, I'm enjoying the unusual bathroom design. Moving around in it doing my daily routine stuff, it's interesting going up and down just 2 steps. lol And thanks for noticing the people stuck on my personal life issues as of recent. That's a price we had to pay for broadcasting our entire relationship, for the most part, to the entire world on social media. But those comments don't bother me, really. I just direct people to our last video together, and they get it right away. ^^

Feed The Cory I doubt you'd even need to wrap up much, Hanoi in December is warmer than Seoul in May. You might consider long sleeves in the evening, that's about it. I've spent "winter" there before, it's still pleasantly warm and sunny during the day, just slight chill in the night. It's really nice, it's sunny and warm but dry and not TOO hot (like much of the rest of year). It gets cold up the mountains, places like Sapa, but it's really not "cold" at all in Hanoi if you are comparing to Japan or Korea. In general in SE Asia the challenge is keeping the place cool, heating really isn't necessary. I live now in Northern Thailand, pretty similar climate, the locals pull out the furry hats and gloves when the temperature gets below 21C but if you are used to a temperate climate you won't find it remotely cold.

worchestechire sauce is fish sauce, don't think most know that, even though they are familiar. The Romans used a fermented fish sauce extensively in their food. they exported it too, in massive quantities

This specific apartment was a 1-year lease, and you pay 1 month's rent for deposit, and pay 3 month's rent at a time. I broke my lease after 7 months, though, because of the construction noise behind the apartment was non-stop all day and night. I couldn't do it anymore and didn't care if I lost my deposit. Did you see the $300 rooftop apartment I got after this place?

This 1st apartment in Hanoi is way way better than your 1st one in Korea, Lol. You could lose your way around after the 3rd pitcher of beer with the local firewater added in.It would be difficult coming from the roof top. To realtors, the correct term for the bathroom, toilet is called ensuite. They term your apartment as all inclusive ameneties.

hahaha I have to agree. I loved that old place in Korea, but it got old fast. It was too cookie-cutter, just like every other officetel in Korea. But it served me well. I haven't really drunken explored my neighborhood, although that does sound tempting. lol Ah yes, I called it ensuite in my "Apt Hunting" video. All-inclusive ameneties. hehehe I love how proper that sounds. hehehe

the $300 apartment you got is still a knock off! but, with $350 plus the plate, cutlery, etc, that will do. i love what they did with their dish rack! $50/month for motorcycle rental. that's actually cheap!

3 things that stood out to me as troubling - contruction noise/dust next door, gas tank and only one spot to cook food. Otherwise, a sweet place/price.

The construction noise has died down a lot since they are done digging and laying pipes for the canal. Right now they are making the concrete gutters, and soon will fill in with asphalt. The dust was my major concern too, but it rains every day, so that actually helps keep dust at a minimum. Gas tank isn't a problem at all, but only one burner is. But I work around it. ^^

I broke my 1-year lease with this apartment after 7 months of living there because of the construction noise out back. The internet was also terrible, it constantly disconnected so I could never upload videos properly, or stream HD content like Netflix and RU-vid without it getting stuck buffering. Glad you enjoyed this tour. ^^

I don't really know what local Vietnamese pay... it might be similar to Korea where young people don't pay anything because they live with their parents. But, in terms of a solo person looking for a place to live, and all the research and opinions I've gathered, it seems this is like around average, mid-range for expats that live here. I was aiming for $170~$250 in the beginning, which is the low-end before you start getting into really terrible living conditions. Anyway, that's just my thoughts about it. It might be slightly off, cause there's still so much I don't know, but that's my feeling from what it's like here.

Those big purified water bottles are factory sealed? I heard they refill those bottles and promote them as pure, clean water.

Yes, they are sealed. I'm not sure, but there's probably some businesses out there scamming customers by refilling with tap water. I don't know for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. The water bottles I get are delivered right from the actual water filtration/bottling factory. I trust it, it tastes clean, and I doubt such a large distributor of clean water would risk their business by getting shut down for selling contaminated water.

I found out the stone really do not cost that much when compared with the cost in Australia, my dad just put in a marble floor to his 2-car garage recently, if I do it in Australia, that would be a some kind of pricey!!!!! jealous my father now!

I highly suggest you book a place for a few weeks with AirBNB. You will find a nicely furnished apartment that's private, with full kitchen, bathroom, etc. Booking a place like this for just a few weeks is impossible, as most agents or landlords are looking for an actual tenant to move in for longer than just 1 month. When I first moved to Hanoi, I stayed in a nice and cozy AirBNB for around $14 per night, and that place is not far from my current apartment in Hoan Kiem district. ^^

Feed The Cory it is cold! I live in the US for a while now in the top half mostly and I always feel it's colder in Hanoi (my native city) than in the US. Mostly because most houses don't have heater and if you travel around with scooter on the street, you'll be freezing without a thick coat. The cold weather is mostly because of the cold dry air blown down from the North sea. In the US, it's cold but not windy so with a jacket you are warm but it's not the same with the Hanoi's windy winter.

I like your apartments in Hanoi than in Seoul.. It looks more comfy and neat. Natural light just comes in. Seoul apartments are so enclosed and you just rely on artificial lights like 24/7.

Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. You can use the app 다방 to search for apartments if you can read/understand Korean. There's even a category for 옥탑방 (oktapbang) rooftop apartments. The unfortunate thing is that most of those rooftop places are shared, so the landlord or hiis/her mother will come up and do gardening, hang laundry, etc without giving you any notice.

Since you said that you loveee VNmese shrimp paste, you should do a mukbang on "Bún đậu mắm tôm" (shrimp paste sauce with rice noodle & deep fried tofu, served with a bunch of herbs); but usually the dish also comes with other condiments such as VNmese pan-fried pork & green sticky rice sausages, steamed pork, spring rolls, pan-fried blood sausages,... My favourite place to enjoy this dish is at Alley 31, Hàng Khay street (near Hoan Kiem lake); but please be aware that there are 2 different places that serve this dish here and they are next to each other; so look for the place which has the yellow & red "Bún đậu cũ/Bún đậu hàng cũ" sign in front of them. Another place to enjoy this dish, also nearer to your house, is "Bún đậu cây đa" - 235B Thuỵ Khuê street (this is actually my go-to place for Bún đậu before I discovered the place at Hàng Khay street :D). Well long story short, you should definitely try Bún đậu mắm tôm if you're a fan of VNmese shrimp paste ^^

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, it's a good place for one person. I enjoy living here, but at $350, I'm paying almost $150 more than many other expats. I'm looking to downgrade to a cheaper place in the $200 range, which is the average price expats pay for a place, usually a shared building. You get your own room, maybe with your own private bathroom and a balcony, but usually you have to share the kitchen on the first floor with maybe 5 to 8 other tenants in your building. I prefer a studio, because everything is in one apartment and I don't have to worry about people sharing my stuff or leaving a mess. I need a clean kitchen, I can't stand housemates who leave a mess and never wash dishes. Studios for $200 are possible, so I'm on the hunt right now. ^_^ I picked Hanoi because I've been here before back in 2015 and really enjoyed the city. Also, HCMC is just hot and humid all year round. I can't stand that, I need to experience seasonal changes, and Hanoi does that. It's winter in Hanoi, it's so cold at night I can see my breath. It drops down to about 10°C at night, which isn't very cold. But, it's cold in Vietnam. It can get down to 5°C in January, I'm told. And once in a blue moon, surrounding areas have received some light snowfall. If you watch my Q&A video about why I chose Hanoi, I answer these kinds of questions in more detail. Thank you for your reply Cory. Hanoi sounds like the ideal climate for me. I like a mild winter but not 5 months of ice and snow. I would like to find a studio for $250 or a little more depending on amenities. Like you, I don't want to share a kitchen. Too many bad experiences sharing kitchens or bathrooms. Most people are not very considerate. You sound like an American. Are you American or Canadian? If American, have you run into resentment regarding the Vietnam war? I was always against the war. I am old enough to have fought in it but I was so opposed because I knew we couldn't win unless we used nukes and that would have brought in China. Johnson was a very bad, stupid president who wasted a lot of lives on both sides because he couldn't admit he was wrong. Eisenhower told Kennedy to never get involved in a land war in Asia because you can't win but they murdered Kennedy who was going to pull out after the 1964 election. I have many reasons for being interested in living in Vietnam, mainly the cost of living and I like the people. I rented apartments in S.F. to boat people in 1979 and found them to be lovely people. I also am interested in seeing if I can help mitigate the damage the U.S. did by teaching english, friendship, mitigating agent orange etc. By being there I can also help their economy in my small way.I will look for your Q and A video. Did you like it? Fermented shrimp paste is used in many cultures in Asia, Southeast Asia, and even Pacific islands like Samoa, Hawaii, etc. It's crazy how something so smelly can taste so good!
