$399 Hyper Carbon Fiber Mountain Bike - sold at Walmart Stores

Walmart stores now sell a mountain bike with a full carbon fiber frame for $399. Is it worth the money, or is it a cheap bicycle with sub-par components? I purchased one to find out. After all, who can resist a carbon fiber frame for only $399. Even if the rest of the components are inferior - that frame has to be worth something, right?
We all know Big Box Bikes tend to take shortcuts to get certain features. Disc brakes on a $99 bike? You can count on the bike having generic derailleurs and possibly even a linear pull rear brake. Find a bike with an upgraded derailleur for under $200? It's likely they wheels are from a cheaper bike. You get the idea. There is always a tradeoff.
So what's the tradeoff when you get a carbon fiber frame for only $399? There are quite a few:
-The disc brakes are the same brakes you find on $99 bikes
-The rims are designed for V-brakes
-The front fork looks just like the forks seen on $129 bikes with no QR
-The QR skewers have locking tabs like those on a $59 bicycle
-The headset looks tapered, but it isn't - It's a FAPER - a fake taper!
That's not to say all the components are sacrificed to get a carbon bike at the low cost, because there are some other components that are decent. Like the SNAFU branded items. I've never owned any SNAFU products, but I have seen them online. I found the name to be comical, but apparently they've been around a long time. The saddle is SNAFU branded and is comfortable and looks great. The SNAFU tires are 26" x 2.30" and hold onto the trail nicely. Plus a 2.30 tire that's only 26" means it feels like a plus sized tire or a 27.5 wheeled bike. There is also the use of Shimano Tourney derailleurs on the front and the rear. Sure they are the lowest end useful derailleur made by Shimano, but at least they are actual Shimano derailleurs and not those cheap licensed flat face derailleurs you see on many department store bikes. The bars, lock-on grips and Neco stem are also nice.
How does it ride? There is some subtle flex in the carbon fiber frame, and the Tourney rear derailleur slaps around more than any other Tourney I've ever ridden, but it's useable. Though it feels less like a mountain bike and more like riding a Hybrid bicycle like the Trek Dual Sport. That's the feeling I got (minus the flex) with this bike on the Wildwood mountain bike trail. It felt like I was on my old Dual Sport - only with better tires. The frame bends, but doesn't break - at least not yet. There are no seams and it is very smooth, so it may be well made. That said, the benefit of a carbon fiber frame on a bicycle is that it should be ultra light weight, and that's how they market this bike. The reality is that the bike weighs in at 31 pounds. 31 pounds! I can only assume the frame is light weight, but the cheap components add unnecessary weight that get it to that total. I have mountain bikes that weight more, but I also have larger bikes that weigh less. So that's a big problem for a bike you're paying $400 for. At $400 you're getting into lower end LBS bikes. That means this bike needs to be judged accordingly. That means I can't find a justification that would make this bike worth it.
-Unless you're buying it for the frame! Soon I'll strip all the other components off the bike and see what we have to work with. If the frame is decent (even with a taper) it may be possible to use it to build a super light weight bike for far less than the usual carbon fiber bike prices.
We'll see...First it has to endure some trail torture from a Cyclocross competitor and mountain bike coach. I'll also put a heavier rider on it and see how it handles that stress. The stickers claim the bike can handle riders up to 275 pounds. That seems like a stretch for a carbon fiber frame. Time will tell, so stay tuned!

Actually it's not because he is coming from a strange viewpoint that makes no sense for the bike. Somebody buying a Walmart bike isn't looking for "performance". Most likely going to be somebody looking to see if they will enjoy mountain biking before investing the money in a proper bike. He keeps talking about cheap this, cheap that.... DUH!!! It's a $400 bike, of course the parts are low end. But that doesn't matter to a newbie who won't be wearing even that low end stuff out anytime soon. Newbies ride slow and won't be shifting that often. They won't be going fast enough to worry about the braking power either. Even V-Brakes have enough stopping power for newbies. He mentioned the "flex" messing up his lines. Newbies don't have "lines".... can you see my point yet? He is coming at this bike from an experienced viewpoint, which is irrelevant to this bike. No experienced rider is ever going to consider this bike as an option. That being said.... the key factor is.... does it compare to a low end name brand mountain bike? No! You can get a better bike and better support at your local MTB dealer for the same money. That support is what matters more for a newbie who will need adjustments and repairs after crashing. You simply can't review a Walmart bike from an experienced MTB'r viewpoint. Even the low end name brand bikes suck for experienced riders. But for newbies, entry level name brand mountain bikes are outstanding value.

I cannot believe that the components are named SNAFU. Someone in marketing is getting one over on their bosses. "SNAFU is an acronym that is widely used to stand for the sarcastic expression Situation Normal: All Fucked Up. It means that the situation is bad, but that this is a normal state of affairs. The acronym is believed to have originated in the United States Marine Corps during World War II."

I used to work at Walmart. When it came to assembling(pretty much anything), Walmart never provides the proper tools or required time, and simply tells employers: "Just try your best ...as long as it looks good" Which meant in many instances if a part was loose or impossible to put together(with the insufficient tools and time), we were provided an as-needed supply of super glue. And so I quote(the famous words of Sailor Jerry): "Good work ain't cheap, cheap work ain't good"

Yeah Carbon fiber is more rigid than aluminum. That's why it's used on roadbikes, good power transfer. Because weight wise you're only saving a 200-400 grams over the exact same bike if it were in aluminum. For the 399$ the Schwinn Axum is the really good way to go.

Great video as always, Carbon fibre has many different grades, the way it works is carbon fibres are layered up with resins and other ingredients and the cheaper carbon fibre has more resins in relation to carbon fibre, so the essence of it is that the bike is probably more plastic then carbon fibre hence the flex you could feel. My apologies if you already knew this.

Seems like a lot of cheap and easy fixes to make this bike really nice. 1. Replace chain rings with quality aluminum, or make it a 1-By. 2. Replace the rear derailler with a used higher quality derailer. 3. replace the brake pads with higher quality pads. 4. Make sure everything is tight and well adjusted, including spokes. I bet it would sing then.

Forks are same as cheaper bikes. That's not to say that they don't get used on other $400 bikes, but it would be the deal breaker for me on this bike. Better to spend a couple hundred more for a frame with tapered neck so you can use better forks. The KMC chain is one of their better ones. Notice the taper inside the links. Most of their chains don't have this anti chain dropping feature. I would still change it out to one of KMC's better chains for my conversions. 31 lbs is deal breaker #2 for me. After adding battery and motor, that = 50+ lb bike. You can lighten it a bit by swapping to tubeless tires and wheels, but by then you may as well have got something from Bikesdirect in the $600 range with better components. I recently parted out a brand new import mountain bike with a lot of the same components at work due to shipping damage. Frame and forks were bent pretty bad. It has better wheels and tires, but the same breaks. Thanks for the heads up on the brakes. I would probably swap them out anyways for ebike hydro's by Tectro. I've done some research on Chinese carbon frames. Hard to get any good info on Alibaba. While I hear that you can get good ones from China, they would still be about the same price as this whole bike, and I would still shy away from any Chinese made carbon frame in favor of one made in Taiwan. I've seen way too many corners cut in Chinese manufacturing to trust a carbon frame from them. I'll assume they used real grease on this bike instead of the sewer oil I see on other bikes? Spot on as always. Thanks.

At all the people saying carbon is stiffer than alloy, yes this is true in the sense that traditional layups produce very very stiff construction. However, carbon is so good because you can change the orientation of the weave and fibers to produce flex where it is desirable. A nice carbon hardtail will be significantly more compliant and comfortable than an aluminum one.

Ha sorry, I'll stick to browsing CL, I just bought a $4,400 full carbon, full suspension 2008 Trek Top Fuel 9.8 for $350, weighs 25 lbs, shifts flawlessly and stops on a dime with the hydraulic brakes

@tmwei396

Definitely a project bike. A set of Avid BB5 or BB7 calipers can be had for under $100. Keep the levers, rotors, and cables and you'll stop on a dime. Replace the rear derailleur with a used LX and shifting problem solved. The fork could be tough looking for a straight 1-⅛" steer tube but a used Rock Shox SID could be found on the used market or a new Manitou or Suntour fork that's a lot more trail capable. $300 later you have a trail capable carbon fiber bike.

The frame is probably mostly fiberglass. Maybe a layer or 2 of carbon fiber. That would explain the flex and (besides the cheap components) the weight.

I think you haven't been critical enough. That being said i would strip this bike to the bare frame. See if the frame is sturdy then hook it up with some good quality components. That would prolly make it a 1000 or more dollar bike but half the cost. So out of all the big box bikes you have reviewed this one seems the most project worthy
@Skooteh
@Skooteh 6 лет назад
buying a complete bike is significantly cheaper than buying all the parts individually. I've tried to part out bikes to save money and it just doesn't work, even when you get an awesome deal on some key parts. Also the frame is more than likely a deathtrap. Good carbon frames can easily cost more than $400 in materials alone and they also require a lot of labour and tooling to put together.
@jonathangarza1656
@jonathangarza1656 6 лет назад
Skooteh yeah i tried to do the same with parts before and it always ends up costing more. Its not like building a computer at all. Anyways that being said that frame could be a death trap. I would if there is a way to test to see how strong it is.

Our department stores here started picking up the quality of their bikes significantly, the prices crept up too. Then I realised, is a $700 department store with no mechanic and no after sales support better than a $700 bike from a bike shop with the same specs? Absolutely not. Department store bikes will never make sense on at any pricepoint. Hyper are probably best known for their BMX frames and sponsored team, I think to see them in Walmart is a step backwards. Also, cheap carbon frames might not be entirely carbon. Even Trek admit to using fibreglass in some of their cheaper bikes, Giant are definitely guilty of it in most of their bikes. I don't think carbon fibre should ever be used on cheap bikes, and those spec's look awful otherwise. Carbon frame and a welded steel fork, budget cranks and derailers. Typical department store optimism where they try and make the bike look better than it ever will be.

This is on eBay and only weighs in at 25lbs. Made in the USA! This Vtg 1991 Cannondale SH600 Blue 21-Speed Hybrid Cross Training With Toe Straps its almost new like! When a Carbon bike weighs more then this Cannondale that is pretty bad. And this Beautiful Clean Aluminum Alloy Frame by Cannondale, can't even compare. Walmart is the ruin of bicycles. Most are junk! I really look at frame welds & I find slop most of the time! The other issue is repairing & tuning up Walmart Bicycles, No bicycle dealership wants to even work on them because of the cheap component parts. This is why I find these Walmart bicycles at Scrap Yards, can't fix them or to expensive to repair. But you did a Brilliant review, well worded, well thought out, did a good job!. I wouldn't pay the money for it.

I’ve been waiting for videos on this bike. Thanks. I happened to see it after I bought a Trek STP 200 for $600 from the bike shop. Much better quality I’m sure for 200 more bucks but it doesn’t have disc brakes. I’ll be riding trails too. I’m sure I’ll survive without them though. This Walmart bike does look interesting though. Kind of wanna rent one from them for a couple days. Lol. I’m glad I didn’t buy it though after finishing the video.

@demonstructie
@demonstructie 6 лет назад
Don't worry, your Trek is a better bike. Decent V-brakes are better than bottom of the barrel mechanical disc brakes. Upgrading to hydraulic disc brakes is a costly affair because you'd need disc compatible wheels as well, but if you feel like your bike needs more braking power you should consider Magura HS11 hydraulic rim brakes. They are easily as powerful as entry level hydraulic discs.
@DNMEBOY
@DNMEBOY 6 лет назад
demonstructie Thanks for the reply! I haven’t noticed any issues with braking power yet. I’m still waiting for the MTB park to open up. Bought some beefier more aggressive tires that I need to go try out. I figured I got the best bike I could for the money I spent. Rear shock seals in the negative air chamber are bad and there’s no rebuild kits that I could find either. There’s only one eyelet on the shock so I don’t know what I could replace it with if any. I don’t know if it’s bad for the frame to ride the shock without air pressure. The ride feels fine but I’m getting full travel on the shock. Not sure if it’s going to bottom out.

"IF",,, the frame is decently made, the frame itself is worth the cost of the bike if you look at it this way, you're buying a carbon frame that just happens to have components already installed on it. The cheap components "could" serve you for a short time as you save $$ to upgrade a part or two at a time. They all WILL be upgraded at some point. I think that it's possible that you could have a decent 26" hardtail carbon bike for under $1000 after component upgrades if you shop smartly. If you're not mechanically inclined, or just not looking for a project, then you should probably look elsewhere. Go for the LBS bike or the $159 Walmart bike. BTW: Great vids KevCentral, they are always informative and entertaining.

It sounds like half the issues are adjustment related. The brakes probably would work fine if they got tuned and maybe received new pads. The rear derailleur almost certainly just needed a few turns of the barrel adjuster. Frame flex is probably a real issue.

I've worked at several bike shops in my life, and have 20 years experience working on bikes. If your buying a carbon fiber frame you should be paying at least twice the price. As you would be getting much better parts and engineering. Its best to strip it and rebuild it with better parts off of another bike. The front triangle shouldn't flex at all. The rear triangle should only flex vertically. Most idiots who buy these bikes don't know anything about bikes, and then have to bring them to bike shops when they break, so it's just best to buy from a good bike shop in the first place. Thanks.

@@haileymatthews1777 I wouldn't trust it on anything other than pavement or a trail that was very well used. I seriously doubt it's carbon fiber. It's quite easy to fake it with spray paint or stick-on patterns. The weight is why I'm wondering if it's fake carbon fiber. I've seen kit cars with carbon fiber bodies and it was possible for someone pick up the upper shell with one hand even though it was slightly smaller than a family car!

Hochtourbiker Giant, I think the frame is bad too. Carbon is supposed to be high performance, but then it has a straight head tube. And its 26", which almost no high end bike frames are any more. It's almost all 27.5 and 29. And it probably shouldn't be flexing in corners. I'd be afraid to ride it.

This frame looks like a pile of garbage though. Wouldn't be surprised if they used recycled carbon fibre, which is mixing the scraps/ broken carbon parts and mashing out/dissolving the resim until they get a mass of non directional fibres. This is alright for molding, but I wouldn't trust it to make a frame where the position of the fibres and their heading is what makes the frame stiff, light and if needed very flexible, but only in certain directions.

The clue to this bike is the rear triangle; compare it to the $300 frames on eBay. This frame has the same weird curve shape at the chain stay seat/stay connection that is typical of a Chinese style carbon frame . If Walmart is sourcing the same quality frames, then they can easily sell the whole bike for this price. I have a Chinese carbon frame from eBay and it performs as well as a bike shop frame. The only issues I had were while building it up with off the shelf parts.
