@@SmokeyFromThe715yeah man it’s prolly one of the most important things to have while working with it bc it can put micro cuts all through your respiratory system
@@SmokeyFromThe715yea you get microfibers of glass in our lungs. They never get out of there again and they slowly cut up your lungs from the inside. Had a relative die fronm that stuff. It is nasty.
1983, did the same thing to my 1979 Goldwing. After stripping, & modifying the exhaust, made it a Hard Tail. Square Bar Steel, heated, twisted, then upper / lower tabs welded, then chromed. I really miss that bike...
I love how you dive right into it and just go for it. I always liked the original naked Goldwings from the mid to late 1970s. One thing from a personal protection angle, whenever you're sanding or cutting anything that makes fine particles, especially fiberglass, please wear a breathing mask of some kind. It'll save you a lot of grief later on in life with your lungs.
Love that you did this, “on the cheap”. Re-using the existing seat and exhaust saves hundreds and still looks and functions well. Old Goldwings are a steal IMO. You get a full liter, or more, engine. Soft but sturdy suspension that can easily handle long rides or unmaintained city roads and spare parts are readily available since they made thousands of them. Good project, informative video.
I like your style dude. A few years ago I stripped a vintage BMW naked similarly to how you did this project and made a sort of street scrambler out of it. I made more money selling the parts I stripped from it than I paid for the bike. It's so much more satisfying spending time doing the work than to just pay for bolt on stuff. What you have done here exemplifies the beauty of the relationship between man and machine.
Couldn’t agree more! I always say the project is debatably more fun than the finished project. Glad to follow suit of builders like yourself. Thanks for watching!
Your determination and humble approach is motivating. Great work. You didn’t stop when times got tough. You worked the problem and finished it! Looks great my friend.
14 minutes in and I can’t stop watching. Something about the way you’re filming, the commentary, and all around energy is what other channels have been missing! Appreciate the time you put into this!!! Update: Finished the video, and gotta say it’s been years since I got a feeling from a RU-vid video, GREAT NOSTALGIA!
I got an 83 sitting in my garage that I was teetering back n forth on. You nailed it! The part where you say "american bagger" made me chuckle. GWing is the OG full dress (in my brain) Yours is a cafe fighter. I just got a croc seat on my sporty so i got chocolate milk in my nose when saw your finished product. I'm gonna be shootin "murdered candy" over the winter
Good job on the cheap, Brutha! I did something like that with a GL1100, though I went further and chopped the tail end to drop the seat height down. Of course, I had to move the fuel tank above the motor. Mine looked like a bulldog. I never had a workshop or tools like you do, though. I'm kinda jealous about that. I used up a lot of elbow grease along the way and then became disabled before it was done. I had to sell it. Now it's hangin' on the new owner's shop wall as a conversation piece. Not all was lost, I guess. I gained a lot of experience. Enjoy yer ride, Bro! The Gold Wings are an awesome machine.
VERY cool, you turned a GoldWing into a new bike, and BOTH versions are legendary. How can you go wrong with a Honda 1200cc ? You can't. Great job youngster, and you earned a new sub'd in Commiefornia.
Goldwing, country music and Trump. Got my sub! I had a 85 anniversary edition Goldwing in the gold color. Had a lot of fun with it. Bought it cheap for $1500 and had it for like 10 years!
@@Tolac1012 that’s awesome man! Glad I could help. That tank shroud is definitely the hardest one to work around. I like the way i ended up doing it, but buying a gl1100 shroud and making it look nice would be way easier.
It looks so much better good job i like how you used the seat and the exhaust repair lots of great ideas put into this bike and all in one video made it very entertaining
Glad you appreciate some of the risks I took! But yeah, I’m pretty stoked on how they turned out as well. Glad you liked the one vid too! It ended up being way longer than I thought it would be but I guess people still watch it😂
I'm looking at doing an 80-83 sometime in my life, you don't have the tank flare out to meet the fairing issue because it's a different style. Awesome project man! More people need to keep old bikes alive.
Hell yeah! As soon as I dove into the project I wished I had gotten the gl1100. I considered buying that style tank and retrofitting it but they never seem to look perfect meshing into the tank/battery covers. Good luck with the future build!
Just saw this video and had to sign in so I could sub and comment. Amaxing craftsmanship and very cool, I drive a s50 never thought about doin a project like this so I'll be watching these videos to learn !
I ride an '87 and have thought about stripping it down. Problem is I ride long distances and the luggage and weather protection helps. Last year I rode through snow in early April. Hot summer days I wish the fairing was gone. I have a small aftermarket speedometer. Idiot lights (neutral, oil, high gear and low fuel) can go in the little panel over the handlebar clamp. I have had a tractor seat on it for a few years. Hard to put my feet down but I can ride all day. I have a hard time getting much done because when I get back to the US I want to ride every day and the Wing is my only bike. I like what you did with the instrument cluster. Cut down to a reasonable size.
Thanks man! I definitely wish I had the luggage still sometimes but I guess lookin cool comes at a price😂 that tractor seat sounds awesome too. Safe riding brother!
im currently doing my second motorcycle. first one was a restore, the current one is a rebuild into something i can c keep for years to come. im rebuilding the engine, painting, custom exhaust with a x-pipe.
Dude! That’s going to be sweet. I want to do another one with a little higher budget some day. Something that will really turn heads. That x pipe is gunna be crazy cool.
Haha, it ain’t easy! I ran into my fair share of uncertainties on this build but it was honestly pretty smooth sailing. I think I just got lucky with goldwings being bulletproof 😂 thanks for watching!
Slick build -- seems like a spiritual successor to the old 79 Wings before they added all the fairings. Was scrubbing the video after my first watch, not sure if you ever resolved the hyperflashing but in my experience with LED converting old metric bikes, tossing in an LED rated flasher relay vs wiring up resistors usually solves the problem. I know some bikes use 2 relays, my 80 KZ750 had one for the signals and a separate one for the 4 way hazard
Thanks for watching boss! Appreciate the compliment and the advice. In the vid I did end up fixing the fast blinker. 4 years of engineering school finally came in handy and I was able to calculate and order the right resistors to get a better flash rate with the LEDs.😂 appreciate having guys like you always willing to help. That’s part of what makes the bike community so great
@@SmokeyFromThe715There was so much to take in on the build, my bad for not catching it! Next project, get a roller and make it an ebike. I spotted a KZ1000 with no engine for $150 and Im so tempted to try a hub motor swap.
Halfway through - i reeally enjoy your confidence and the way you talk about learning new things. The excitement in your voice kind of reminds me of Steve-O! Awesome project, will definitely do something similar as soon as i have the necessary space - and have an idea that complies with stupid German state inspection laws...
this is a phenomenal build my dude. the style is absolutely amazing. Matt Spears is the only other youtuber I've seen that chopped up a Goldwing. I never would have thought to make a cafe racer out of one. well done.
Haha. Anything was better than the pile of rubble it was before.. you’re the first one to pick up that I may have done that on purpose..😂 you’re awesome man. Thanks for watching.
I'm so glad I found this video. I have the same 84 goldwing project going on and I got lost on where to go with the cluster and what you did looks fantastic and I might have to do the same. Your build turned out amazing though!
I was pretty stumped on what to do with the cluster. Most of the Amazon clusters seem a little bit cheesy to me so I was pretty excited on how this turned out!
Congratulations! You've turned the Winnebago of motos into a cafe racing cow.. Fun fact; I have an '84 and an '86. Originally going to use engine in a plane but a couple rides convinced me not to interfere with the elegant ergometric, acoustic, mechanical, and aerodynamic engineering of these classic machines. That said, I'll be watching your adventure with interest. Good luck!
Super rad man. My buddy had built a monster garage bike, when we first started road riding. They built over one long winter with, just with whatever there was remaining over about maybe 1000 cc Only $500 in parts in the thing and near $10k and above bikes everyone everyone among all bikes any brand looked over and thought the custom bobber he built was the baddest one in the lot
Don't know what's special about this motorcycle, but it's a most beautiful motorcycle on the whole world ❤ hope one day he will join my pack of Honda's 😅🍓
That’s so awesome bro, good job. I went to France last summer and found a 1994 CBR 600 F2 that wasn’t running well and I got it up and going then sold it before I left. But I think I’ll try and do something similar when it warms up here in Utah. Take care. Keep going!
I love seeing stuff like this. Good job, man. If I could pick one bone it'd be using a cutoff wheel instead of that reciprocating saw on the plastic. You don't wanna be breaking stuff.
Sweet build man. Love these kind of projects. We're attempting to make a silly scooter cool like this. Very excellent work. You keep this up and your channel is going to be big. You earned our sub.
I tell you I'm a Goldwing guy and I cringed at you taking all the bags and faring off but this build came out nice and I like how you were able to retain the dash and I like how you did the fiberglass work on it.
@@scottleininger6201 thanks man! Appreciate the open mind, glad I could change the mind of even a purist. In my defense, pretty much all the fiberglass was broken somewhere. I’d like to say I rescued this one from the scrap yard😂
Haha windshield would definitely be nice. I wipe bugs off my helmet almost every ride. I have looked into some highway pegs too. I think that would be pretty badass
When this started I was all oh no… Gona jack up a perfectly good gold wing. But by the end I was all damn that’s really nice. Great job Mi Amigo. Definitely something to be proud of.
@@ahbalone thanks man! Wanted just a little more aggressive look, not sure if I have it in the vid but it actually is the stock fender, just chopped and pulled in. I do think I could’ve left a little more on there.
Very cool project ! Bike truned out great. Love that mix of blacks powder coatings. Simple but effective. Makes me want to get a goldwing and work in it. Cheers buddy.
@@udaralakshan5206 haha, 20/20 paint job. Good from 20 feet away at 20mph😂 what the video doesn’t show is me screwing it up the first time, sanding it down and redoing it.
I like what you did here.. I had a 1983 GL1100 Aspencade that I chopped into a cafe style bike too.. I managed to to retro fit a set of analog gauges and ditched the digital dash that my bike came with. I had to go through every single wire in the front harness to see what it did and how to make them work with the analog gauges LOL .. Wish I still had that turd of a bike :)
Great work, nice result! I'd have gone for a more café racer humpback seat personally (I was doing a similar build i.e. a black café racer with a 1990's Triumph Bonneville but the weather over here just killed the project and my garage). You have access to a brilliant shop!! A walk in powder coating oven?! That must be for professional use surely!
@@shovelchop81bikeralex52 haha! Thanks for the feedback. The seat could definitely be better, but for my first time doing a custom seat I’m happy with it. I used to powder coating for customers but haven’t for a while since I started a new job. Good luck with future projects!
Great job I'd 1000% buy that's bike if it were for sale, would be cool to see a newer goldwing motor swapped into it. Also use some Mothers aluminum/magnesium polish on the forks and any other parts you didn't powder coat to make them shine
Enjoyed the video it was a fun build to watch. I think you definitely hit a custom feel for it that suits the nature of the bike and your own preferences. 👍
Superb video and astonishing build! But brother, pleaseee, look after yourself! Easy to forget being young and feeling indestructible, thats exactly how i feel myself! Breathing in fiber glass is bad, bondo even worse! Paint is no good too... only got one pair of lungs! Anyway loved the music, loved everything in this video, many thanks!
@@Elmantukas thanks man! Appreciate you lookin out for me. Definitely something that’s easy to overlook but I’ll keep your words in mind. Have a good one!
What a guy! Great content. Just found you today. Youve got lots of skills and a good set up at home to do everything yourself. Jealous of that! Best wishes from a very rainy 🏴
I bet it handles nice because they're pretty good stock except for the side clearance. I'm curious as to how much weight you were able to take off the bike😊
@@ahbalone I definitely need to weight it some time. I’m actually pretty stoked on how it handles. Super smooth with the flat 4, and goes straight like it’s on rails. In the turns, I definitely struggle more than my buddies on lighter more aggressive bikes, but I’m feeling good on an all day ride while they are standing up cause they are bouncing around on a hard seat.
I can agree with that. If you look up cafe racer gl1200 seat on eBay there is one for sale that i really like. The only problem being that it is $310 with shipping which is more than 50% of what I have into the bike. So for the price of the $15 leather that I bought I’m kinda stoked with how it turned out. Plus when was the last time you saw a gator skin seat??😂
