The Seawind 1260 is essentially the bigger sister to the 1160, and you know we already love the 1160. Whether you feel that the 1260 or the 1160 is the right boat for you comes down to personal preference. They're both very similar but here is a list of some key differences of the 1260 when compared to the 1160.
Length: The 1260 is 3 feet longer.
Beam: The 1260 is about a foot wider.
Draft: The draft of the 1260 is seven inches deeper.
Displacement: The 1260 3700 lbs heavier.
Air Draft: The 1260 is about three feet taller.
Engines: On the 1260 diesels are standard, but are optional on the 1160.
The 1260 is slightly faster.
The 1260 has more sail area.
The 1260 has a nav station in the saloon.
The 1260 has molded seating in the cockpit and a cockpit table.
The 1260 interior is more plush.
The 1260 has more storage and payload capacity.
The 1260 is about 100,000 dollars more.
What do you think? Would you rather have the 1160 or 1260?

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

Thank you for the tour of the Seawind 1260. More boat than I could ever handle but it is beautiful. Randi looks fantastic. Looking forward to the first appearance of the new crew member. Take care you two. Have a great week ahead.

Thanks for the tour and review of the Seawind 1260! Yes, the fire port is to send extinguisher material into the engine compartment without opening the engine cover hatch. Never open the hatch on an engine that's on fire as that feeds oxygen and makes the fire much worse. Shoot it with the extinguisher first. Bigger boat, but the newer Seawind 1370 looks like a nearly perfect design to me. Only things missing are daggerboards and electric drive. It takes all the best features of the 1260 and makes them better IMO.

I have looked into these two boats extensively as I plan to retire onto a cat. Yes, there is a difference in "luxury" in the two boats, and the 1260 will perform a little better (slightly faster) because of the extra length, etc., but like anything, it comes down to affordability. 100K (around 1/3 the base price of the boat) goes a long way in your add ons (all the things you will want, like the screecher pole, downwind sails, etc.) and cruising budget. If your budget is tight, you will be limiting your cruising lifestyle, and when repairs are necessary (and they will be,) you will feel crunched. Remember, the 1160 has an equal living space to an almost 50' monohull, and will still sail faster in general than most cruising mono's. So the 1160 is no slouch, as you expressed in your 1160 review. As in your review of the 1160, you talked about the transom bench. I am sure Seawind can remove the grill and give you a long bench, or customize that seat. Tables are an easy purchase. The space on the bow deck is noticeably larger, but the cockpits are not that different, nor is the interior space aside from the 1' width. And the bow cushions are available for the 1160 as well. So yes, it comes down to the 100K: Is the additional 3' length/1'width and standard accessories worth 1/3 the boat price? Both can be circumnavigated, and have records of doing so. If you have the extra funds, then you will love the 1260. If your budget is tighter, the 1160 is still an awesome boat that will take you wherever you want to go.

Hey Guys, stay safe. I enjoy the channel and congratz. If you ever get a chance I would be interested in seeing you tour one of the various silent yacht models. I know its not a sailing cat but with almost all solar power and even an optional kite sail, I think its a spiritual successor to the classic sailing catamaran. But that is just my personal opinion.

As a 'starter' home for new parents a '3 bedroom, , naturally compartment-ed, multilevel (well engineered) human habitat with a 360 degree view of life and sky (plus storage everywhere) seems roomy, like it could span generations as a family 'go-to' boat as they came aboard or went ashore for school or who knows* what as the years go by. Just have enough kids so there'll always be a skipper on board. *teaching the inner ear about alternate physical rules: static gravity & horizon. Like being out in space, it probably infers some lasting changes over time. **And Poseidon forbid! You should give birth to a landsman! ;) ***Sailing a family... is kind of like starting a cult (the good kind) :)

Dual alternators on both of the engines. My guess would be one for engine starting battery charging and the other larger one below for house bank charging. No sweating anybody throwing the switch between starter and house bank with the engines running causing issues.

Having sailed on both boats multiple times, I don’t think the 1260 is worth the extra $100k. Interior is essentially the same. You get more fuel storage on 1269, but at a significantly heavier displacement. The extra 3’ on the 1260 is mostly just for the nicer cockpit.

Light sensible design at a reasonable price and quality. The biggest complaint I have is that many systems are distributed around the boat inefficiently taking up most convenient storage space. Cruisers will undoubtedly be tempted to store things where they fit and eventually damage something expensive and or important far from civilization. If you don't store anything in with equipment this is an expensive small boat. Quality cruisers have smartly designed mechanical rooms -one look to see all is well. This looks like every system is an afterthought.

I'm a little worried about something. As you do these boat tours, you've got a very pregnant Randy pointing out and saying "Here's a birth, . . . and here's a second birth, . . . " All along she's about to give birth! I'm worried that it could be like putting someone's hand in water while they are asleep. I'm worried that on one of these upcoming tours Randy will say "Here's the main birth, . . . Oh no!" and have her first contraction begin. 8 - 0 Besides me having such worries, this was a nice boat tour of a nice boat. I'll have to go for an older monohull, myself, if I ever get a bigger boat that is blue water capable. A low budget is the deciding factor for me.

I garnered the same feeling with regard to operational systems 'scattered in disparate locations throughout the 'Cat. 1260' contrasted with other 'cats.' the systems of which seemed more centralized, proximal to one another, concentrated. As to a NAV station, facing forward, not to a side, ALWAYS (port or starboard sides. Last: No Wet Heads, shower enclosure needs distinct separation for cleaning ease and much less area to require cleaning to keep MOLD and MILDEW at bay. Truly final, one needs separate freezer and refrigerator compartments for the sake of true blue water, long distance sailng, in my view. Thank you fot your patience!

Just for price comparisons. A new loaded Leopard 50 is around 1,2M and up. It is also a much bigger boat. You can't really compare as the 1260 is a performance cat (600,000 fully loaded). It is a being used for serious cruising and has proven safe ocean crossing capacity. Also it keeps its value as no other cat I know about.

Comparing the glazing on this boat, and the Lagoon before, you can feel the practicality of upright or vertical glazing. Not only is solar radiation greater on sloped glass, but visibility can be impacted too. Especially where you have a helm situation which has to look through two layers of glazing and might have had tint on it to reduce thermal effects. I think it might be possible to reduce these effects with sloped glass, by having a fixed peak over the windows to provide shade, with vents on the back to exit air trapped beneath

That one is one of the options I am looking at, though at the moment I am leaning towards a monohull again - mainly because I do also want to sail Europe, and catamarans aren't exactly suited to many EU harbors, let alone if you want to do any channels/rivers.
@steveturansky9031
@steveturansky9031 3 года назад
There are a few major benefits to monohulls: 1) Monos are cheaper to buy, maintain and store (harbor, yard, etc). 2) Monos point better on average than cats (trimarans are different). 3) Monos are less affected by weight. If you overload a cat or tri, it can drastically reduce it's performance and safety. In just about every other category, multihulls have the advantage: 1) Cats win on space for living, solar panels and dinghy/toy storage. 2) Multi's on a beam reach or downwind are faster 3) At anchor (or moored), multi's are superior. 4) Shallower draft opens up alot more areas to go on a multi. 5) Most multi's are unsinkable - Huge safety factor if you hit something. 6) People are less likely to get seasick on a multihull. But it still comes down to mostly personal preference (and affordability). Some people swear by their preferred hull type. I've sailed alot on all 3 (monos, cats and tris) and each is a compromise. I have a tri. I want a cat. I might have to settle for a mono $$$.
@wombatdk
@wombatdk 3 года назад
@@steveturansky9031 All good points, and all on my radar too. Right now, my thinking is: catamarans are just more comfortable for an old gal like me, and they provide better onboard workspaces (I telecommute). The price difference is a bit hard to swallow. While I could afford a cat, it'd seriously hit my savings - both in the short run (purchase) and long run (maintenance). On the other hand, a decent-sized, wide-hull mono might be plenty of room for me. At first I'd only spend summer months on the boat anyway, until retirement, then it'd be fulltime.

Yes. On the sides of the hulls the opening ports are escape hatches. It's a much better location than most cat manufacturers who put the hatches near the waterline and if they leak they could sink the boat...

In general, I like the vessel, but sisaprove this arrangement. It appears that the Aventura 37 has better spaces and usability than this Seawind. Also, a much better helm station. Unless is a monohull or a 60 footer, no reason to have two posts.

@pierre.a.larsen 3 года назад
On paper the Aventura 37 sure looks nice. I look forward to seeing reviews when it comes out. But the 1260 is a proven cruiser that just keeps its value. For cruising the 1260 helm setup seems pretty good. Safe/protected for ocean crossing, helmsman is in the middle of the social activities and docking from either side should be a breeze.

@@pierre.a.larsen You're right about the need to be proven, but I have a friend who owns a beaten Aventura 43 and loves it. As per the helm, I know is personal, but I prefer the higher position and never had problem docking either side. Also, galley up feels better, although tightens the saloon. Seawind's configuration may be better for a liveaboard couple who rarely receives guests.

Boats are such odd things. They cost as much as a house, and can be used as a house. However the don’t appreciate like a house, in facts they depreciate quickly in value after the first few years. More like an RV or a Car. So your committing huge sums of money you know your going to loose. As such I would say keep it as budget friendly as you can, but not so much you feel that you cheap’ed out. In a house I always say go bigger or better if your budget can take it as you will get it back when you go to sell. The same is just not true on a boat.

Just throwing it out there for discussion. Just think if every sailing channel could rally their audiences into one combined voice how powerful (and global) that could be.
