Seawind 1260. Guided Tour and Review. Good Price to Performance, but is it something we'd consider?

We took a guided tour of the Seawind 1260 Catamaran at this year's Annapolis Sailboat Show. We have never filmed this boat before but it was a make that I often got questions about from my viewer.
The Seawind is the lightest and least expensive of the 11 Catamarans we filmed and reviewed from this show. It seems like it is well suited to the type of buyer that is interested in a Catamaran that sails fast, but perhaps not living aboard full-time.
Watch to the end of the video when we give you our opinion on the pros and cons of this Catamaran.

Hi We sold our big house and live on a Seawind It’s fine There’s just two of us It’s really easy to put USB ports near the bed and these usually are standard near the bed ours was anyway Gallery down has been great and it’s such a good place to cook when in a rough seaway I think solar is standard on our boar anyway Boat is fast we pass nearly everyone Vision is fine ahead and when helming it’s a matter of sometimes standing at the wheel where there are steps and steering by foot very comfortable and my favourite position and hasn’t been any problem at all Vision at night is excellent and nights coastal and offshore have been fine and there’s actually good vision in real life and at seas lot of life has been sitting at the saloon table because vision is fantastic forward from there I understand all your concerns but in the real world of daily life our boat is so well designed I shudder when I think I could have bought the lagoon catamaran I went shopping for my god I’m glad I didn’t do that . The seawind has been a star performer and it was worth every cent.

This is a great boat and fabulous value for money. The trifold doors are a great feature! It provides for massive lounge/cockpit space when the circumstances favour it. Most boats, even with offshore sailors, spend most of their time moored. I've seen a few reviews of this boat now, I'm not sure yours gives this boat the credit it deserves.

Like we said, we hear, and assume from its light specs that it sails really well. Jay kept mentioning lightness and performance in everything he said so they are clearly focussing on the performance focussed buyer. So that is what we said. It is a good boat on a performance to price ratio. But, is it the perfect boat for our needs of living for the next 20+ years as sailing nomads, where we will probably spend 80-90% of the time at anchor and only 10-20% of the time doing actual sailing passages? No. Just not enough storage and comfort. Not at the top of our list even if it is reasonably priced.

The Seawind 1260 2018 Catamaran of the year for Catamarans under 50 feet. The build quality the stiffness of the boat under sail. The safest boat for a couple crossing oceans. The Seawind 1160 10 years later sells for more than it did new. I’m sure the 1260 will be the same. No balsa core on this boat. Multiple circumnavigations.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 года назад
We never said it didn't sail well. Quite the opposite. We said we figure it sails really well. What we said is it is a great boat for someone that wants to live on it part time. There just is not enough quality storage areas where we think you would need them. For full time liveaboards, we think there are better options. Sure, could a couple that are true minimalists with few possessions make this cat work for them. Sure, but we are not that couple. We plan to have inflatable SOPs, Dive gear etc etc on our boat, so this boat is just not big enough. No one needs to get upset. Just our opinion for us.

You can't judge how great the Seawind 1260 is until you sail one. The lower free board and twin helms mean you can sail them like a dingy sitting on the hulls. Seawind will customize your boat to whatever you want. You can put cabinets in the cabins, Seadeck or whatever on the decks and inside floors, add outlets near the beds, etc. This boat is $440k as reviewed, while the Maverick 440 starts at $680K. That's not even close as it's $240K more, which is more than half the price of this 1260. Add another $60K to this boat and you would have most of the extras you would want for $500K brand new. I will be retiring onto one of these for sure in 5 years, without all the bells and whistles I don't need. I have a 50' Riva power yacht now I use for technical dive charters and coastal cruising. I think this 1260 has more internal space than my 50', and is very innovative at how they utilize space in a 41' boat. It's really about preferences. I would prefer performance and simplicity - less cost and maintenance. You might want a sailing house. It's all good.

You can leave the door up (open), down fully closed, or center panel down where both left and right panels of the door can swing/remain open and closed. Jay didn't get to show all of those options, he seemed flustered. The grill on the other side of the outdoor sink, refrigerator, transom and davit set-up also got skipped. But on the Seawind YT and other channels they show some of those, among other things. Also should have shown where the washer/dryer would most probably fit, same with batteries, watermaker, genset, and other storage options for clothes, gear and dry goods. Nevertheless, the 1260 is my favorite. Options for cabinetry and usb/power outlets can most probably be arranged with the factory for a price. They should have a list of options with pricing always available though. Saying 'relatively well-equipped' is highly subjective and is bad salestalk imho.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 года назад
I fast forwarded and even cut some out of the filming of the door being put down. It was a long and finicky process and it took 2 people to put it down. If I owned this boat, I would just leave it down and then open the side doors for ventilation. I was just saying, if it is a pain to raise and lower and you always leave it down for ease of use, then you might as well just have a big sliding door like every other cat.

Cruising Off Duty it’s really not a pain at all. I drop the door and raise it in under a minute by myself all the time, and it’s not something that’s dependent on strength. Anyone can do it that quickly. What makes it “finicky” and sometimes challenging at shows is you have TONS of people wanting to come through while you’re demonstrating, and you obviously have to be very cautious around so many people, so that’s why it takes extra time

I just ordered a Seawind 1190 Sport, which is the lighter, taller rigged, dagger board more performance oriented model based on the 1160, sized between the two so am familiar with the pricing. You are correct in thinking a lot of it is “ a la carte”: I am ending up around $650, from a $ 379 base. Some of this will be done at the factory, some here, which gives more choice of components. I am ordering Harken electric winches, twin helm stations with 16 inch screens, doing all cushions, AV, tender, liferaft, ditch bag, screecher, spinnaker, flooring in the US. I understand this approach may be frustrating to some, but I like the freedom of choice. I actually like the door system, and the steering position. The glass looking into the salon comes down in the 1260, is removed in the 1190 so you are only looking through 1 window pane. You can also look down the side of the boat, and have perfect visibility from either side with no windscreen. You are certainly correct in saying these boats are more oriented to sailing/performance than live aboard, but the simplicity appealed to me.

Thanks for writing in and confirming. So you could get a nicely appointed 1260 (or 1190) if you want to pay for all the upgrades. How was the price for upgrades from the factory? Many builders gouge for upgrades. I have been told by many that the best thing to do is buy a boat fairly basic and than upgrade it when you get to the US east coast where vendors will upgrade with the best for cheaper.

Having watched this video several times I can't help but think that your review was heavily influenced by what is included and the relationship with the tour guide. As far as what is included, this is an inexpensive boat and I wouldn't expect the winches to be standard as "electrified", I agree Jay could have had better arguments on several topics, this same logic applies to many of the comments you made about "how is this or that not standard?". For instance the galley down. It is down primarily to give you better use of space and a larger galley and saloon rather than compromising both these areas. The door system is very functional when it is down, I have been on a few of these boats and never encountered an issue with the tri-fold door. When the door is up, as it might be for days at a time when you are in the Med or Caribbean, the easy flow of indoor to outdoor is really amazing. This would be totally different than when taking a delivery cruise across the Atlantic. You left the Antares excited about a boat that is almost a million US Dollars, if you kit this boat with 600,000 you would have an amazing boat with all the tech and comfort components your heart could desire, now the Antares is a more comfortable boat and if your review went in that direction I would appreciate it much more.

Hey Guys, we just spent 10 days on a seaweed 1160 light and they do have phone charging points at the end of the main bed near the step which is hidden by some black plugs that cover them up and they have 12volt point and multiple usb their. The same in the cabin by the kitchen. Their is lots of spots for extra storage underneath the steps that you climb up onto the 2 main beds. So you can have your phone charging by your bed no problem. OK. Good to know there are some plugs but we really wanted a space for your phone and other things to charge up by our head where we can reach it quickly. Not at the base of our bed. Small gripe but no shelving or plugs where you sleep is something that would annoy us after years of living on it.

I’m pretty sure the boat you were on had 4 solar panels. At least I haven’t seen any 1160s or 1260s that had the salon-top panels installed that didn’t have the standard arch panels installed. I believe the standard arch is 2x200W. The salon-top you saw seems like it might have the smaller 200W panels up there, so 800W total, but there’s an option for 330W panels so getting the ~1060W doesn’t take covering everything in panels or anything. It’s pretty close to what you saw (if not identical).

OK. Good to know. The panels did not appear to be that large. But I will take your word for it. So it had 800 watts. But the older style that they get shaded on they don't work that well so lets say on a good day you get 500 Watt average. That is not enough. Many of the other liveaboard boats we have seen have 2K watts+. I only saw 2 panels but I may have missed the other 2, even so it needs more. I kept asking what solar comes included and he kept answering me with how many watts could fit. So it gave me the feeling that no solar was standard and you could add as much as you want at a price.

the seawind have a loyal following, not for me as im not keen on the look of them, but craig youre getting used to me saying that. lots of people live on the 1260 and the issues you have about lack ofs ( shelving, plugs etc) can be solved for couple grand. think outside the square slighly and anything can be solved. say you spent another 100k making it 530k then it makes Antares (which i like) look expensive at 950k.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 года назад
After reading a few other viewers comments it seem the consensus is that this boat comes fairly bare bones for $430K, so if you need all the things a full time liveaboard boat needs, you would be adding to the price to far above the $500K. Yes you could retrofit plugs etc beside your bed but you can't really create space for storage or shelves as the walls are already right up against the bed. If I have to start moving walls to make the boat work for our needs then I just think it is not worth it. Maybe for some. Just not us. A used St Francis or a uses Antares at 600K would be a bigger and better boat for a full time liveaboard couple. IMO.

@alistairmcdonald265

It all comes down to personal preference. The sea wind offers simple systems and excellent performance. They are proven blue water cruisers. If you want something with more home like systems and space you really sacrifice the ability to actually sail the boat, which this one does very well. The salon windows are actually glass as opposed to some type of composite and those on the cockpit side can actually be lowered. Having the helm station(s) on the same level as the salon enables excellent 360 degree vision, and more importantly negates having to raise the boom to accomodate a raised station. Once again if performance is important then this design is golden. What you fail to understand with these boats is that they are highly customisable if you go with a new build. Seawind will incorporate all or as few systems as you wish to have. That’s why the price is approximate and you misread the agents repeated references to what you could do as dodging what was actually on the boat. Maybe not great for the USA market? The boat has been very well received in the Southern Hemisphere and Europe.

Have you looked at the Lagoons, they all started at great prices. The 50 had everything needed with no necessary upgrades for USD 650,000 and had one of the best layouts that I had seen. The 46 and 40 were almost identical with the same quality and lower prices.
@Bowmans-Woods

The 3 big mass production boats always seem like decent prices until you start adding all the extras on that you would need to live on and the price they charge for each upgrade or option is steep. By the time you are done, it is not such a great deal. Better to get them to build the basic boat and do the upgrades later at better prices.

@@Bowmans-Woods The biggest add-on that the guide told my party about was solar. There was next to none on the base model which I could definitely see driving up the price. We were also told that with it fully loaded it was around 1.2 mil but with basic QOL features like lazy jacks and the bimini top, it stayed just under 750k. That is quite high for most people but I think it is a great price for the layout and customization especially.

very few people get the door set up on seawind cats while under way the door would be secure with one or both side doors open or shut the advantage to this set up is water tightness a slider can not be water tight because it has to slide where this door can close and seal when arriving at your destination you simply open the large door as simply and no more complicated as you would raise or lower your dingy

OK. Thanks. Not sure how a door that swings down and latches is any more water tight than a sliding door. I think if either of those door options got slammed hard with a big wave it would leak at the bottom. This is an Australian cat ie its for Sailing, light, practical and works, it sails and sails well, we have to sail thousands of miles through the roughest waters on the planet to get anywhere therefore the stupidity of a motorized hotel room with sails stuck on the top for looks isnt even a consideration. If your going to potter around the Caribbean its not going to matter an inner tube with an umbrella will do the job but theirs a reason the floating hotel rooms are only found in the Caribbean and Med and nowhere else on the planet. If your actually prepared to pay hundreds of thousands in fuel bills to motor everywhere so you can have 80 kinds of lipstick and 5 tables go for it if however you want to actually sail anywhere forget it, the hotel rooms cant sail, they are specifically built for charter companies so inexperienced tourists can motor around in circles in the Virgin islands.

If you want more shelving, go to the hardware store and build some. Your missing the point of this cat, the entire boat is one giant bullet-proof hull. The 1260 was the biggest they had. Before releasing this video we watched a video on the 1600, thinking people might say it would be more to our liking. But, no. It is a Outremer substitute. All about performance with HUGE trampolines with little storage and thin hulls with daggerboards. So the 1600, although bigger than the 1260, by far, would not be something we would consider either. The new Seawind 1370 takes all the strengths of the 1260 and improves them significantly; huge windows and clear sightlines, even better interior and exterior design, more storage, etc. Only downside is no daggerboards yet. 1370 has the galley up in the salon. The tri-fold door is far more practical (and innovative) than you give it credit for. It can be easily deployed by one small person in under a minute, and it allows a more solid bulkhead than sliding doors of similar width would allow. Here's another demonstration: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6ihZvvn7udE.html Regarding lines exposed on the deck, research shows that UV degradation is slower than normal handling wear, so it's not really relevant. I don't have the reference handy. For a 41 foot boat, manual winches could be workable. Larger boats might benefit more from powered winches. Most people don't use extra electronics for nav stations. They plan on a tablet or laptop instead.

@@Bowmans-Woods Thanks, would enjoy seeing your review of it! Main downside is Seawind has a large backlog of orders, so boats may take a while to get delivered. Other Seawinds get good reviews.

I felt like you were a bit too picky. OK, you will need to select some options to meet your needs. But it's still a good price, good performance, just the right size for you. Ya, we watched a video of the 1600 before we posted the 1260 video just in case someone said we should consider it as a more suitable option. We agree with you. Compared to the 1260 it has tiny portlights for ventilation. A total shame they didn't use the huge opening windows as a "Seawind" iconic feature on that boat. It is built with no hard dodger and is clearly all about performance with its huge trampoline and daggerboards. It reminded us of a Outremer. We were not a fan of that. I would hope that they crank down and seal well. In that case the one big hinged piece of glass is just as safe as any other Cat. I do love the way it opens the entire glass for ventilation. If there is one thing most cats suffer from is the all those windows on a sunny day cause the inside to really heat up and there is often a lack of good ventilation. Hence why most cat owners spend most of their time sitting in the covered cockpit. This cat seems like it would be just as cool to sit in the indoor salon. Rare.

At the end your closing notes are so wrong. Even on your video we can see a place and i am sure there is a plug next to the bed for cell phones etc. Throwing a few shelfs is a matter of 100-200$. But at the end your criteria is some "princess seats" and not stepping on the open lines which btw have about 7 years UV and salt resistance and are really easy to check for chafing. Good luck finding your cat although i think you didn't consider carefully what living and maintaining a boat, full time on a long passages and remote locations is about. Just picture that, remote and wild island in the Pacific, no internet, nobody speaks your language and you need to repair your lines or some highly sophisticated electronics on the boat. Living a life like this, you need everything to be easy to repair by both of you with a duck tape and a wire. The other thing which is amazing on this boat is galley down. I agree, but often they get a new owner to agree (for a cut in price) to be available to be at the boat show. But then they have to show the boat the way that owner paid to have it made. Some scrimp on extras and then it doesn't show as well at the show. Then the sales guy has to tell you what options could (for a price) be there. I agree with a lot of the points from all the commenters below. On a smaller boat I do see some value in Galley down. It allows for a decent sized indoor salon for eating and entertaining. I do see that having a galley down could also have value in bouncy seas because you are in a tight space and can easily brace yourself. But, on a bigger cat, I see the value of a main floor galley because, let's face it, The cook wants to be part of the party too. And, how often does a house party end up being mostly congregating in the kitchen where all the food is laid out. Galley up may be where everyone ends up hanging out. And even if it is in the back cockpit, going to the kitchen to whip up more food, does not exclude you from the group conversation. Janice also likes galley up because she wants the beautiful 360 degree views from there, while cooking or cleaning. Who am I to argue with that? :-)

But being exposed, that will happen more often than if they were protected. The problem I have heard about 'performance' boats is that you have to keep them light. Once you weigh them down with all the 'required' gear, supplies, generator, etc they sink lower into the water where the hulls are wider and thereby go slower.

The reason a lot of cruisers spend 90% of the time at anchor is because their boats are motor sailors.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
No that’s not it at all. They spend 90+% of the time at anchor because its all about the destination. It takes a while to really explore a new area. You meet new people and you make new friendships. That is what exploring the world by sailboat is all about. It is not a race around the world.

The helms position design is just dumb. You have to have a clear field of view, as Craig mentioned, specially at night. What they have done is out right dangerous. Unless, there is a crew on the bow as a lookout. Just my two cents.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 года назад
Dumb might be a strong word because I know what they are thinking .... you are protected from the elements there, but it would be hard to get good lines of sight (especially at night) from there. So not an optimal position IMO.

I don't agree with your value judgment. This boat is uninhabited with absolutely everything that has to do with comfort. Air conditioning, safe navigation instruments and dozens of other elements that are not "to know which lights to turn on or off". If this boat is equipped with what, must really carry a cruise, then it will no longer be worth that price. So, I think, it's an "expensive" catamaran, not at all "cheap".
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 года назад
OK. I hear what you are saying. It is set up as a basic boat. Best suited to being a vacation boat (which we did say). If you add everything that we would need to live full time on it, it could add to the price significantly. I just wasn't sure by how much, so I erred on the my lower estimate of $500K. It would probably be more.

Ha Ha. I wish Thomas. RU-vid is not going to pay the bills when we start sailing full time so we have to stick it out a few more years to get our full indexed pensions. Golden handcuffs as they would call it. We will be seriously scouring the used Cat listings in about 3 years, ready to buy. Until then we will do the odd passage on other people's boats and we will continue to film the boat shows looking at new boats now that will be perfect used boats for us down the road. We have to be patient, and smart. :-)

I really like y'all vids, but I'm baffled as to why performance should even be a thought if ths will be your home. Who cares if it's a day or two longer for a major crossing, and the benefit for a heavier cat is stability and comfort, at anchor or under sail, plus the lower cost, extra space, etc; than if it's one equipment with a useless dager board system for long term live aboard cat. Some if those boutique cats also seem to barren inside, and ugly outside..
@sphynx098
@sphynx098 4 года назад
Andrew Labat Not really important for living at anchor (probably a negative for this) but performance is one of the most important safety factors. The ability to outrun storms or spend 2-5 fewer days on an exhausting ocean crossing with rough seas (especially when short handed) is more important than anything else, IMO.
@dratko1213
@dratko1213 4 года назад
Also, for sustainable/quiet travel performance doesn’t only mean top speed but probably more importantly is light wind sailing ability. Not having to use the engine as often is probably the main feature that draws me to a “performance “ boat.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 года назад
The difference between a Cat that sails along at a 8 knot average vs a faster boat that averages 10 knots is not going to allow you to outrun a storm. The "outrun a storm" reasoning is always what I hear for performance lovers. It alway bugs me when I hear that. Modern technology allows us to see big storms many days in advance so if you get so close to a storm that you are trying to "outrun" it then you were being stupid and taking unnecessary risk in waiting that long. Even the slowest Cat can get out of the way of a big and dangerous storm by sailing, given enough warning. Worse case scenario a Slower Cat could motor sail and easily do 10+ knots, even with almost no wind. So, please stop with the "you want a performance cat for safety". Go watch my interview of Steve May on the X5. He is a performance Cat owner and he even admits that a performance cat is way bouncier and uncomfortable at sail and at anchor and the noise that the performance cat makes when it sails at those faster speeds, makes it hard for the off watch person to sleep. So they often get done a passage and they are exhausted and their friends on slower cats get to the anchorage a day later and are well rested. He also says his performance cat was way more likely to flip over than a heavier cruising cat. He thought the X5 (a Cruising Cat) was bulletproof. You could accidentally leave up too much sail in a squall with high winds and the boat could take it. His cat, he would be worried it would flip. So, performance does not equal safely or comfort. Quite the opposite. It only equals more sailing speed at the trade off of less comfort and less storage and most likely a higher price.

@@Bowmans-Woods I'm not talking about avoiding hurricanes or once-in-a-decade storms that will likely destroy a boat no matter what kind of boat it is. As an example: I'm talking about a pressure system that comes from behind you more quickly than expected when you are in the middle of an ocean crossing, and there isn't anywhere to motor or sail to within 24-48 hours. This is very common, especially in the North Atlantic and Pacific. A more performance orientated cat that can do 14-20 knots at the front of it and not get overtaken by it is far more pleasant than being overtaken by it and spending 72+ hours in 45+ knots. As someone else pointed out as well you aren't going to be doing much sailing in a cruising cat until you are getting 10-12 knots TWS, especially if it's not at the perfect angle. A performance cat will happily sail at or near the TWS in 6-8 knots. Not arguing at all about the "luxury" disadvantages - of course there is a cost to the performance. I'm also not saying that any of the cruising cats you clearly prefer are a bad choice - just saying that it depends what you want and both choices are valid. If you are more minimalist and prioritize the way a boat sails you should go for a boat like this. If you prefer to have every creature comfort with you on passage then obviously a cruising cat is a better choice. I've sailed on numerous lagoons as well as 2 or 3 performance cats and things like hull slap, bounciness etc. felt the same. Perhaps the fact that people are in a performance cat makes them sail faster but 10 knots in the galley or hull of an Outremer 51 feels very similar to a Lagoon 52.
