$500 versus $8,000 camera!!! Canon T2I versus Fuji GFX 100s
A fun little project that I undertook to see what it really means to be a good photographer. We tested the age-old saying, the best kind of camera is the one you have on you. And if you watch the video you can know for yourself if this is true or not. There is something really amazing about capturing the outdoors that I even forgot which camera I was using as I focused on the shot itself.
Thanks for testing them out with me!

You are correct. If you are going to take terrible photos it doesn't matter what camera you use.

Amazing reminder to stop blowing money on higher end gear, and just concentrate on taking and processing my carefully composed photos! Thanks for all you’ve taught me, Serge!

I used to own the Canon in this test and might as well not raw edit my photos at all because the files fall apart if you so much as look at them. Terrible sensor.

It’s mid 2024. Looking for my first DSLR. Found a great deal on a Canon T2i…it was $89. Now I can focus the real money on a couple high quality lenses to get me started. But know that it was this video that pushed me over the line on getting that T2i. Thank you for the video!

I used the T2i for years and received some of my most positive feedback from my T2i.it truly is one of the most underrated workhorse ever made.

Do you still shoot your Sony A7R3? I am using the R4 for little over a year now. Coming of the R3. Great cameras. I am interested in the Fuji system tho. Knowing you work on macOS. Is it heavy on your machine?? medium-format has more data in their files.

I could tell them all, but the difference isn't as big as the marketing would make you think (at least not when viewed on social media). Cheap cameras are REALLY good these days. I still want a medium-format camera, but I know I don't need it. I always tell my friends: interest >(is bigger than) composition+light > good post > lenses > camera. (and if you're doing video, audio is more important than any of those). Thanks for sharing.

I can never tell formats from a TV screen. Even 1" sensor cameras look good. It's when editing and printing you can tell the difference. I'd never go below full frame for quality. I use MF nowadays. Regards

I had them al correct… I shoot myself with Fuji XT3 and XT4 + Nikon Z6 & ZII. The colors and tints from Fuji, they are recognizable from in the far east 😉 That said, you do see the difference in image quality. The question is allways, what are your needs? And there after how much will I spend? Comparing a a GFXs with an entry level, that’s like comparing a Ferrari with a Fiat. They both ride, that’s for sure.

Excellent video. I am encouraged by this video because it confirms my belief that it is not all about the camera or gear; it's about the person (artist) behind the camera. I proudly own the entry level Canon T4i and looking to master this camera so that my own creativity supercedes my preoccupation with two things ... 1. do I have an adequate enough camera and lens and 2. getting all the settings right. Manual, Av, Program ... which one!! Keep making videos like this one, Sir.

If you're going to both blow out the highlights and clip the shadows and shoot on a tripod at F22, sure any old potato will do. Try taking this image with the sun not blown out, then raise the shadows to show the foreground with natural color. Try getting the iris of the nearest eye pin-sharp in a portrait with autofocus in a fast-paced photo session or even an event, using a native zoom lens (no expensive L glass allowed but then the rebel can't focus that properly either due to basic SLR AF microadjust function being removed from this model). Both common examples where the Canon will fall apart, badly. Poorly designed test and thinly-veiled sales pitch.

Thanks Serge, I have always thought about the time that many people waste trying to compare different models of cameras, that if they had taken advantage of that time to go out and take photos they would surely be better photographers. Great video to open the eyes of many people.
@problemat1que
@problemat1que 2 года назад
Yes, they could learn enough to understand that this "test" is completely meaningless because it blows out the highlights and crushes the shadows, so it taxes neither the dynamic range of the sensors nor the optics of the lens in any way at F22.
@GodfreyMann
@GodfreyMann 2 года назад
I found it too hard from my iPad Pro, so I switched to my iMac and there the difference was quite obvious. Going purely by the difference in dynamic range, the Fuji's images stood out as superior.

Fuji without Capture One is very bad.... Lightroom only after Capture one and basic adjustments. I have GFX 50S and C1 is a game changer.

The problem with these comparisons is that we cannot really see the quality of the picture thanks to RU-vid and the small devices we are watching the videos on. So, you could tell us pretty much everything and we have to believe you. However, I am sure there is a reason why use the GFX100S for your professional work...
@michaelbell75

I’ve used the T2i for my professional work. I had 3 photos of a model published in Muscle and Fitness magazine and I’ve had cover of car magazines using it. I used the $75 Canon 50 1.8 lens too 😀
@problemat1que
@problemat1que 2 года назад
@@michaelbell75 You probably used flash, which reduces your dynamic range to a few stops, and either manual focus or studio-friendly apertures of F8. In the right hands and under controlled conditions, you can make low quality gear deliver. At the same time, if you shoot wide open in daylight in a high DR situation, the T2i falls apart badly, I've owned one.
@michaelbell75

@@problemat1que Actually no. Most were shot natural light and around f/4-f/5.6 The car covers were shot with lights though. I shoot fashion portraits, Im never shooting wide open.

Thanks Serge for making this great comparison. Thanks God I didn't spend on the latest EOS R6 and still using my 9 yr old 6D with 17-40L. To be frank, i prefer the less magenta Canon colour science, and if you didn't blow up Fuji photos, I couldn't tell the difference in term of photo quality on my 1080p screen.
@jensvielmann7662
@jensvielmann7662 3 года назад
The Canon needs more Dynamic Range. Burned out sun, harsher transitions between the hue levels in the sky etc. come to think about it… I think the results would have been even closer if you had used a cheap Nikon or Sony. Obviously best color match probably with a Fuji T model…

Hi i would like to ask if you could recommend me a camera that is budget camera and beginner friendly
@problemat1que
@problemat1que 2 года назад
Look for a used X-A7 or X-T200. They weren't very successful in the market because they weren't "pro" enough - they introduced beginner-friendly touch-screen user interfaces that may be just what you're looking for. As a bonus, the lenses you get for these will fit a wide range of other cameras (more "pro") that you might get interested in later. Alternatively, take a look at a used Olympus E-M10 mark II or mark III. They have great creative features built in like live long-time exposure and also give you an entry to a full-fledged lens system, although I hear their user interface can be a learning curve. Stay away from the big names Canon, Nikon, Sony. They have become complacent and refuse to provide you with quality lenses for your budget crop camera with the intent of forcing you to upgrade to their $10000+ 35mm format systems.
@homeboi808
@homeboi808 3 года назад
If you are gonna spend money, spend it on the lens. A budget camera with expensive lens likely will give a better image than an expensive camera with a budget lens. The sharpness/detail will be much better and the aperture likely will be much wider allowing you to get richer bokeh, use lower ISO, and use a faster shutter to get less motion blur.

I checked my Sunset photos and quite a lot were not in focus... And that is crucial, and not so much the gear... For 100% sure I have the best gear, and it is actually not expensive with the Dynamic range of 14.7 (nikon d7200 and z50, Tamron 18-400mm, Tamron 10-24mm, Sigma 17-50mm)... Again which camera can compete, but that is not important... I tried your tools (presets) and my pictures become so much more beautiful. And if all photographs will retouch like you ...Now, I have so many pictures to retouch with Lightroom, before I used DXO (DXO is the very best for contrast,... But has not so many options like Lightroom)...

Obviously the fuji has more dynamic range and colour information. It was easy to pick out. However the result is definitely not 20x better. Beginners should not worry about gear. Low on cash? Shoot film!

Developing film is an expensive running cost compared to the zero cost of digital. It also doesn't provide the learning experience of immediately seeing the mistakes you made.

AT F22, yes. Wide open with autofocus no - it lacks AF microadjust, so it's unsharp with any glass, even better glass.

Very impressive, Serge. I looked the video on a smartphone. Here are the differences are very small. On comparison the camera includes the cost, the winner is definitely the Canon. With a budget of 8000$ most hobby photographers like me would get a complete new equipment including a new computer. Regards, Dirk.

Meanwhile, I edit my photos on a discarded $140 computer off ebay with a $100 graphics card to accelerate the computation and upgraded away from Canon a long time ago because its files were a clown show of chroma noise.
