Preach on brother, I love running old cheap equipment. I see guys running nice new shit then all of a sudden, you don't see them making hay because the bank got thier equipment back.

I know an old boy that runs a Ford 5000 and a New Holland 479 Haybine, and has for 40 years. Has a couple parts haybines he's picked up over the years. Had roughly 25 beef cows, but now just sells his hay. Older equipment was built back when people cared about their product.

"Tell us how you REALLY feel",. ChuckE.....ROFL. Luv the straight-forward tales of woe with the new Chinesium crap, compared to the old iron. I use Gravely equipment, old school, and my Ford 8N and old John Deere (made in USA stuff). Planned obsolescence/failure with the cheapest metal known to man, just won't do it if you farm or depend on the equipment.

I bought a 1470 gehl baler for 650 a 489 haybine for 700 and both perform perfectly. The gehl baler makes a nice tight bale and I can run it with my 35 horse power Massey Ferguson. The baler was missing it's monitor it has electric twine tie. I hooked it up to my harbor freight remote control winch controller that is on my tractor and it works great

Clearly you never used anything, maybe except from Zetor, made in Europe. In here NH is not considered as quality brand. As for baler my favorite is old Krone KR130 or KR150 preferably with 1,4m pickup and net wrapping. It's simply build, takes whatever you go trough with it, weirdest thing I was balling with it were black currant branches, grease, if I remember correctly, around 6 points it would be nice to do it daily and it's ready to go. New ones still work great and are faster but this one I could use with 47hp tractor in field and between currant rows.

Those old NH chain balers would bale concrete blocks if they went up the pickup. They don’t roll tight bales though. The springs get stretched and lose tension.

Yes they are tuff and reliable. You will hate it when it chews that apron chain up though. There are so many models of balers out there in between these and electronics that make so much nicer rolls and have very few issues.

My dad had a chain bailer like that when he was still able to work years ago. I hated that thing because it always worked. The only thing I liked about it was it meant I did have to tote square bales anymore. He would tell me to wait for 45 minutes to an hour and then bring the baler because I usually caught up to him raking and would have to stop and wait. 😂

New equipment is designed on a computer to be light weight and functional. Problem is light weight in farm equipment equals failure. New Holland was fighting to keep its reputation as quality farm equipment. New equipment makes there money with volume production and $3000.00 pto shafts.

There is some really great newer equipment that has stepped away from a lot of the electronics but the price is still ridiculous. Square balers can be the bane of existence but are super simple Chuck. You buy a used square baler and make SURE the knotter parts are new an its timed correct and they will run forever.

Equipment failures follow a 'bathtub' chart: many early problems like you had and then as the equipment ages many late problems. Some designs have a narrow bathtub trough just big enough to toss a cat in while the best has a hippo or elephant sized basin to splash around in for decades before any real issues. Store this baler inside, even if you need to just throw up a carport with bent lumber and second hand tin.

I love my old equipment but the production just isn’t there those old balers are slow and would take forever to make my 3k bales a year. We use a 605n and make half dry and half silage bales.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with farm equipment is leaving it out in the weather!!! Never pressure wash a baler; only blower or air compressor.

To the extent that modern automation could deliver any benefits- excepting some of the interesting developments around selective spray technology for high value crops, it's all up front in the cab. All the benefits of the 21st century could sit in a module that slots into the dash of a Minsk Tractor Works export hauling a 50 y/o baler, and work much better in that configuration than with new hardware dragging off the rear.

The chain balers were great as long as you aren't making haylage. Great if you are selling by the bale too. They are so loose compared to a modern baler. I love old equipment but there are tradeoffs. Trust me there is alot of testing on new equipment.

Chain balers are literally the biggest pile of $$$$$ ever conceived. In light windrows it will literally grind the bale down to where the bale actually gets smaller while baling.

Man, while I do agree that stuff isn't made like it used to be, I'm glad it isn't. Honestly, when you are pushing 4-8 thousand bales per year, its impossible to run one of those. Between operator fatigue, parts scarcity, and the bales that are so loose you could stick a 2ft tree trunk in them, you would make no money with one of those. Plus on top of this, I've never seen a round baler that was over 10 years old put up hay like our baler will. As an aside, when you are trashing other equipment, show both pieces. If you only show one, you are creating a fallacy and not allowing viewers to develop their own opinion.

What's the difference? About 10 yrs of abuse? Nope, cheap engineering. And, since you hate carbonates so much, you would really like steam, I know you hang out with Steve and them around all those steam engines, or, better yet, safer, and more modern turnkey and go without waiting is a diesel turned HHO, water seperated into hydrogen and oxygen then drawn into the intake. Simple system, a bit of stainless, an extra water tank, a bit of electrolytes, at most, an extra alternator and battery, but, other than the initial exspenses, FUEL for the cost of the electrolytes.
