Just a quick thing to check. Make sure your storage isn't filling up fast on it, some Oneplus phones are writing large dump files and not deleting them afterwards. This causes the storage to fill up rapidly, LTT covered this issue a few months back.

The screen is the most valuable part. If you find a One plus phone with a pristine screen but the rest is broken, repair is cheap.

I'd love a $51 OnePlus 8 Pro. Hugh gets all the best finds.

0:46 normaly there should be a charger in the box since the 8Pro uses warp charge which requires a special brick and cable which they provide in the box

I suppose $AU 400 isn't that bad for a device like the OnePlus 8 - that equates to just over £225, so good value for money. If you had taken the route of selling online, rather than privately, I'm sure you would have seen a profit.

When I did my S10+ a few weeks ago I spent two solid, long, ardouous hours scraping and cleaning adhesive. It was well worth it.

Although the spare parts weren’t cheap, I was impressed with how straightforward the repair process seemed to be. Especially when you compare it to Apple products. I have the oneplus 8, and can genuinely say l love the phone.

I repaired an 8 pro earlier last year and I have to say, you are very lucky the display was an aftermarket. The original adhesive was so strong, that I burned and cut my fingers whilst removing it.

The original adhesive on OnePlus phones on the back is really tough to remove. When I replaced the battery of it myself, I wanted to make sure everything was as close to factory as possible, so I replaced the og adhesive with some official back adhesive as well, but like you said, it's tough to remove. I spent like 3 hours trying to remove it with a spudger and some regular isopropyl alcohol.

The new adhesive for the display you bought might have not been sealed properly, so particles got into it and made it less effective. Pain, but you got around to it anyway :P

One plus has definitely changed from what I remember. Overall this should be a great restoration

I worked at a repair place for about 2 months and I watched half of the repairs get done super lazily. Main issue was reuse of seals and adhesive being common place. We didn't have all the tools we needed either, the owner just didn't get some of the stuff we needed. I got fired after I sent a lengthy angry email in response to a bogus wright up and as much as that sucks I'm glad to be gone.

Trick for making pre cut adhesives stick better. Run a heat source over the adhesive for just a few seconds. Heating it up will make the adhesive stick and when you put the devices back together it will spread out more for a better seal due to the pressure 😊

Clumsy people who don't use robust phone cases really trigger me 😩 Terrible phone repair booths with rubbish skills are even worse !! 😠😠 I hope your family member gets a good case for it, as it's a fragile design !

If phone companies get to sell phones with no chargers, I expect a big "No Charger Included" written on the box if companies keep putting "Batteries Included" on boxes.

Nice video Hugh and a Happy New Year to you. I've repaired a few OnePlus phones and I do like them but prices for parts for the later models here in the UK have gone through the roof. So unless I can pick up a faulty phone for peanuts it's not really a viable repair here.

Idk if it will work but perhaps when placing the precut adhesive. You either place it on your heatplate or hairdry it. Maybe it can reactivate the stickiness?

I have this phone in the same condition as that one, sitting in my drawer broken. In Canada the cheapest I can find a replacement display for is around $400 on Amazon from a questionable source. Ifixit has no stock on the one you used. Repairing the 8 pro will cost me almost the price of 2 LG V60's which is what I have now.

99% of the time I use my own adhesive similar to the way you did Hugh. Just can't trust the kits in my opinion. The last thing you need is a repair coming back because the display is falling off.

Till oneplus 7t pro ,i was a really big fan of oneplus. IDK what happened after that, something was missing from them and now in 2023, oxygen os is completely gone. Wish oxygen os could be back in action and the old oneplus too.

I have the Oneplus 8 Pro as my current daily phone. It's a great phone and is still going strong after a couple of years. I didn't realise it had wireless charging, not that I would use it anyway. The design looks more straightforward and repairable than other makes.

When I saw that amount of adhesive on the back I instantly knew the phone would have water damage lol. Whoever sold that phone knew what they were selling I think.

Apropos iphone connectors, have you seen where 30 pin and lightning connectors are swapped, on phone? Most adaptors are impractical for my use case- using expensive plug in microphones with 30 pin plugs like the iXY on more recent phones.

I bought a one plus 8 pro a couple days ago for £200 in almost new condition came with box and original charger. I got sick of using iOS so I needed android back and I'm loving it

I must point some mistakes you've made based on my knowledge so we can all be better tommorow. 1) After disconnecting the battery, press the power button several times to discharge any electricity. This is to prevent shorts 2. If possible, replace the water damage indicator 3. This is uncommon but sometimes the pre-cut adhesive needs to be heated with the right amount of heat to make it sticky again. (If you're replacing them with 3M tapes, just ensure that the tape is not too thick) 4. To make it more cleaner, wipe off residual liquid adhesive *BEFORE* it starts to harden. You may use a tiny amount of alcohol and maybe use cotton beads for it. But using alcohol after replacing the new screen is risky, so be responsible if you want to 5. Again, cleaning anything using alcohol is risky after replacing the screen. Try avoid using it because even one drop of alcohol could ruin the entire display if it makes contact

It's interesting that this OnePlus boots without the wireless charger being connected. When i was changing the battery on my xiaomi mi 10 and tried to test it if it boots after the change nothing happened. I had to connect the wireless charger too before it would actually boot. I got so scared that I had broken something. But then it worked luckily

They didn't include the charger, because it's effin phenomenal. Charges every electronic super fast. I use mine for all my other stuff too

I have a google pixel 6 pro which I love to use. I had broken the back glass of the phone. So I ordered one from aliexpress which took a long time. When it arrived I removed the back glass which was really hard and the nfc and wireless charging coil didn't survive so before I applied the back glass I ordered a new one. Apperently i had to remove the screen to plug the cable I was a bit sad to remove a good original screen but I did it. there wasn't any problem I had to remove the whole motherboard. I did everything right i tested the nfc and wireless it didn't work at first but then I replugged it and it began to work perfectly then I installed the screen(before I installed it I opened the device and the screen had no problems). Then H noticed a black spot in the screen bigger than the camera punch a little left mid of the phone right were you would read something on your phone and there was a green line to the top from that. That lighted when the screen was on so always on display made it so that it lights green line every time its so annoying. I tried to replug the screen cable and I noticed something was inside the graphite tape right under the dot. It was a broken glass from my back glass. I am sooo pissed I did everything almost perfect nobody would think this phone had been repaired but just a silly little glass shard made it horrible. I am still using the phone like that and its pretty annoying.

a tip for next time if the touch doesn't work use a usb c to usb adapter and plug a computer mouse in

Hugh may i ask where did you get the display and adhesive from? Ive recently went to a local repair shop to change out the display on a 8 Pro that i gifted to my dad, but the shop didn't glue in the display properly and left a gaping hole next to a dent. Was wondering if i could get some adhesive to re apply secure it myself.

Hello Hugh, can you please say what brand of double sided tape and glue you use in your repairs? The tape I currently have does not do a very good job of tight adhesion. And I would like to try the glue also.

Not sure how much you paid for the replacement display but here in the US you would be lucky to make your money back after the investment in the phone and new display. The 8 pro OLED panels are ridiculously expensive. I have 2 8 pros with broken screens that came in a lot of 20 OnePlus 8 (non pro) still sitting in a drawer. Even with displays sourced straight from Shenzhen they aren't worth fixing. I did however repair the OnePlus 8's that were not pro models and they are profitable.
