A dedicated Right to repair advocate, I am Hugh Jeffreys. I have had a passion for technology and filmmaking since I was 9 years old. I create RU-vid videos on restoring broken phones, tablets, computers and other electronics as well as customising or modifying various devices to produce stunning one of a kind products. In doing this I aim to reduce the amount waste going to landfill and to educate people on the topic of DIY repair.

Hugh just out of interest what happens if you replace a part with another genuine iPhone part say a screen but the screen is from a iCloud locked iPhone. Or say you buy a broken iPhone smashed screen but you just need the camera.and you put that camera in the new iPhone will the part work. Assuming the part is from the same model and year. But one is new and one is say a damaged phone. Or nothing damaged but iCloud locked.
Even with genuine brand new parts it says USED and one small update could render the whole process useless. Icloud locked parts can't be used so spares from locked broken phones are a no and 3rd party parts can't be used either. The back glass and enclosure are now serialised too and people consider this a step in the right direction while Apple still control the whole process and require you to buy new parts directly from them. I can buy parts for my Umidigi, have them delivered in a few days and fit them without any pairing whilst paying very sensible prices directly from Umidigi. This is repairability!!
Its really frustrating that Apple puts this much effort into locking down their devices instead of actually providing useful features to their customers
I was waiting for your assessment Other sources are an apple glazefest and I hate it We need to make people aware of Apple's hipocresy and warn of their practices
On my iPhone XR on iOS 17 I replaced the battery with a “non genuine one” and the battery health was disabled with the message. When I updated my iPhone XR to iOS 18.1 beta 4, I could now see my battery health but the non genuine message is still there.
Someone really has to reverse engineer these pairing chips to overcome this intentional BUG. (Whether to use a electron microscope or just some binary reader so people can copy the IDs between spare parts.)
Both look great from the screen of my amazing s24 ultra:) how ever [ my english meh, i'm dutch( apple phones are an engeneering marvel to :) like always good video :)
5:13 why is it so weird to me that a phone shows such status of a display? Why should a phone even know that it was disassembled? Why is there even a menu in settings designed for this? (Like saying that a battery needs service. That has never happened to me. My phone only knows the capacity, charge level, temperature and whether it is charging or not.) Does my computer tell me that my monitor is too old? (I know I know. Money. But it is such a weird thing that the phone knows everything what is happening with it.)
I just wanna say how much i appreciate your work hugh! I started watching your channel 4 years ago. This month i fixed my first phone ever. And now by the middle of the month, i have successfully fixed 5 mobile phones, granted all android, but still something I’m proud of. Between cracked displays or backs or faulty batteries, i have revived 5 devices that their owners have given up on. It’s all thanks to you. Thank you so much. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re positively impacting people!
None of this is "nice" or good. Apple isn't doing this to help customers out with 'genuine parts' else they would have no trouble recognising their own original parts as genuine, but they used to not be the case right up until this update. Even now it's up to them whether they want allow you to have a fully working phone or not, even if you bought parts from them. This is unacceptable. I should have a right to repair my device with whatever parts I want. Even if I never buy apple, all other phone manufacturers ape their ideas and practices so I will keep harping on apple to get out of my property.
Has someone who also likes the tool kits from iFixit, it seems like every year Apple is just trying to make it harder than it ever was for repairs. Yes, Apple's displays for their phones come from Samsung, but you have to think every company is trying to make you buy a new phone every few years, and it seems like Apple is the one that is more unfriendly for repair. Eventually, Apple's going to have a downfall at some point.
