I like the combo of lithium and propane. Our lithium system was not charging off the alternator (controller box went bad) but having the propane meant we still could cook and heat water until we could get somewhere to plug in. We were good for about two days.

Proponent of propane. Nothing like cooking with gas. Also the cleanest burning fuel source for heat (and electric never gets warm enough for those in the coldest of environments). Two thumbs up.

Nice tips on shouting out U-Haul. The process is pretty quick and painless. I am a proponent of propane! I don't want to have to worry about my battery levels and potentially ration my energy between cooking and charging things or running core stuff like the fridge, and needing a huge battery setup in the first place. Propane is pretty cheap and the burners are pretty efficient to cook so your LP will last a while - especially if you use a pressure cooker! "range anxiety" can be a thing but with the right resources, apps, and information you are usually never too far away from a place to fill up.

I was intimidated by using propane but that was really because I didn’t understand how to use it or load it in a van. Thanks to you and a personal tour by a Travato owner I learned not be scared of it. And yes I much prefer cooking with propane. Thanks again for your van life info.

I live in a Class C. I removed the propane cooktop for more counter space. I use a portable butane campstove when I want to cook with gas and a portable induction cooktop otherwise. I still use the propane for cabin heat and heating water when I'm boondocking. The Class C has a 20+ gallon propane tank, so I don't have to fill it that often.

That is the big factor here. I can’t imagine having to make a search and a trip every time he needs two gallons of propane. I would be ready to mount two 5 gallon cans on that back ladder.

thanks for another informative video Scott! Sad I missed you at the show. when I first started looking at class B's to purchase, I thought I wanted nothing to do with propane. However, I love cooking with gas and do not want to have to deal with powering an induction stovetop, so propane it is! It's quick, adjustable, and gas just makes better food, imo!

Jesus Scott that monitor looked like my report card from grade 4. F F F F. It wasn’t a great year, I had my appendix taken out too that year. The next year my teacher told my parents that I might grow up to be an astronaut. My dad was pleased but my mom asked why do you think that? In an emergency, is it possible to buy some readily available 20lb cylinders and fill the onboard propane with those? Is there a special valve connector for that? Would that even work?

We love propane. We use it for heating primarily and hot water. But we hardly use the stove as we carry an induction cooktop and a BBQ. Although propane allows you to manage the flame better, induction is faster and by using it or the BBQ we preserve our propane for heating longer the coach and water. Our biggest complaint with filling as many propane dealers you have to keep an eye on so they don't damage your unit.

If you are back in the Midwest at some time, most Menard's stores now do propane fill. I prefer propane to cook on and for heat. The RV outside tap allows use of a gas grill too. I have seen some campers use a dual fuel inverter generator plugged into the outside tap as well. On a generator propane is cleaner and does not foul the carburetor as gasoline does.

Union 76 gas stations in my area have propane station and dump station. The weight of a propane system is about the same as 1 battery, but will last for months in any weather. People put fuel in their van at least once a week, but they're not willing to fill propane tank once a month; apparently

Love having propane. Love cooking on it and Truma is sooooo much more efficient on propane. I guess I could see the argument for an induction cooktop but what about heat? Not sure about the bigger lithium packs with more juice but I would never be able to boondock with the Truma running off of batteries. You should do a test on the heat (once you leave FL) to see which is a bigger battery suck, air conditioner or heater.

Thanks for your tips for apps that locate propane. The rig I ordered can be equipped with either a propane stove or induction cook top. Like you, I chose propane for cooking also. I can always buy a portable cook top later if I want another burner. Since the rig comes with propane regardless, I will also purchase a long hose to attach to the van and a BBQ. I wont have to carry or store small bottles.

Very cool! When guying to grill to connect to the propane port, make sure it takes “low pressure” propane. I had the same thought as you by my grill requires high pressure propane,, which requires to buy the Coleman propane canisters

Hi Scott, 🙋‍♀️I have had both. Electric is slower (or induction).No open flame. Propane is quicker and adjust faster. It is nice to have different options. But, more options take up more space. It’s not hard to readjust from one to the other but they use different pots.❗️Just a learning experience. 🐾🐻🚐💨

Hey Scott! Scott here with the Boldt. I bumped into you at PF in Jacksonville a few weeks ago. Was really great to talk shop the short time we did! My manual says to fill propane tank max to 80%. Does the Travato have the same warning? Definitely a big fan of propane during these colder months. Biloxi was 40° this morning but propane keeps it nice and cozy. I prefer the induction cooktop myself - I don't burn my food as much haha. And with Volta, I don't even think about electrical consumption anymore (unless I run the electrical heating elements!). Hope your enjoying the warmer weather by my hometown.

Scott love the detail of this video. I know what you mean about cooking on gas. As a kid we always had gas and then off to college and apartments and the always had electric. I guess I got used to it. No real van experience for me yet but i chose to have no propane on my van that I am waiting for. Here is why. One less item to remember and know about. I won’t have to remember where the tunnels are that don’t allow propane. I won’t have to look for and manage when I need to fill up the propane. Plus for me I don’t believe I will be full time. I think I can adjust my cooking needs. We will see once I get out on the road. You make a great case for those who might want to have it. Travel on!

talk to any chef or serious person that cooks and it would be gas hands down as you can control the heat better. Conduction is tougher to make many dishes as you can't control the heat as well.

Since you travel full time do you need to have your propane system checked regularly for a good connection? F/T would be a lot more wear and tear than a weekender. I think a lot of people worry about explosions even though that is rare...always hope the guys filling the tanks know what they are doing. I even switched my BBQ for an electric one. Maybe I have trust issues, lol!

I do not have a rig and never have. Only waiting for the beginning and planning of my next phase of my life in a van, truck camper or small trailer. From watching a lot of video's, it seems the biggest downside to propane is condensation in the van and a possible leak and fire in the van in future years as the van ages. When I get my rig I will probably have a portable propane stove so I can cook outside the rig, location, weather and insects permitting.

Condensation is not an issue with the Truma furnace. It acts as a residential gas forced air furnace. No condensation from that, system right? Excited for you next chapter

I have propane with my Thor Sequence. But I would rather just have a heat from the gas that I already have. Especially since the tank is so small.

You have mentioned that there are some people like you that like using propane and others that prefer the use of rig fuel / electrical integration energy systems. Have you come across any articles or videos that do a deep dive in the pros and cons of say a Truma propane/electrical assist system vs a Webasto heating system with a strong lithium system?

I haven’t ran across such materials. Probably a “religious” topic similarly to lithium. Everyone picks sides but in the end gets a similar result.

I am going to be ornery & not give you a simple yes or no on propane & here's why: I have read that some tunnels (didn't hear about any bridges) will not allow us access with propane. I have heard of many Travato owners getting propane leaks at the fill intake due to poor service. (What a shame! One more thing to repair on our dime!) I heard that propane can leave lingering odors inside the coach but not when cooking outside. I also know it is still going to be necessary for our Truma heating even if we have induction cooktops in our L models. Here's what I still want to know after your video, please: Tell me about the bleeder valve. Do you open that before & all during the fill & then shut it off? I want to be certain I get the sequence of events down before the first fill. Or is it in a Travato manual? Speaking of a manual, is it available online so I can read it, search electronically, etc.? Sure hope so!

Hi Linda. No worries.. All the propane I have taken into the tanks what’s only handled by the services station attended. They ask that I stay away from the action. One even made me get Luke of out the van and step far away. Most service stations, if not all, have certified personnel that are trained and qualified to operate the propane delivery machine. When you pull up to get propane, you simply watch them do all the work and will be thankful they are doing so. Like getting full-service gasoline in the old days... or if you are visiting OR or NJ where the attendant fill your tank. Same thing with propane. Propane is quite safe, really. Hope that helps

You really did not show and explain, slowly and in detail, the actual mechanics of connecting the supply hose and starting and stopping the refill process. Also, was it self-service or full service performed by a U-Haul associate?

Thx Arthur. In my experience all propane services are performed by the staff and many ask me to stand far away as they fill. This guy didn't really mind getting recorded, but most prefer not to. Apoloiges for the weak How-To video mission the mark for you.

I think it would be easier without propane.. Less to take care of and worry about supply. Would prefer interchangeable bottles if I had it due to ease of finding a supply. Induction cooktops are as good as gas for control. IMHO I think the hot water and heat would be okay with gas or diesel. The simpler/less systems the better. I think you have said you are not a fan of cassette toilets. Is it just the dumping you don't like or do you have other problems with it? Would you give up a black tank if you could have that amount of storage for extra fresh water? Enjoyed the RV show for us that couldn't attend. Happy Trails to you and Luke!

Thx Craig! Cassette = watching what is in your black tank spill, slop, gush, etc into a traditional toilet as you try to flush and control the contents coming out and odor. How does one rinse it out after the empty? Don’t know as I have never done it. No intention of because dumping means finding a traditional toilet or finding a waste dump to employ the cassette.. Not sure that answer your questions directly?

Do you worry about carbon monoxide when using propane to cook? Especially during winter when you don't want to open the window or door of your van.

No worries there. Propane for cooking is on a limited amount, like 5-10 mins. There is a propane gas detector inside in case limits are reached. Great question James. thanks for watching and commenting

My thought, I think I'd want and induction cooktop with convection microwave oven. I went back and forth on both propane and all electric and decided if I could do it, it's all electric. One question (my paranoia) with propane if someone rams the vehicle, will you become a rolling bomb?

Propane tank is under chassis mid-ship. I think 25 gallons of gasoline would be a bigger “bomb”. No reason to worry on propane after 66000 miles on my Ram van

Im still I bit unsure about the relief valve...did the tech use it? And when? Pro-propane As the saying goes.... “We are cooking with GAS now”! Best for cooking but I added an induction plate (fits in drawer) Figure in Fl there’s plenty of times I’d rather not heat up the galley...but you need that open flame for pepper 🫑 skin removal!

In planning a DIY van, I've been thinking about including induction for inside use, and adding a pullout propane grill for outside use with a small portable tank. To me, that is the best of both worlds, and you have a backup in case one system fails. Like you said, induction has less build up of heat inside on those hot days, and you can gas grill outside on nice days or if you are making stinky fish and don't want all your bedding and clothes inside to smell like dinner.

@@dmark2639 Exactly! How about the best of both? Both Portable But with a dedicated space/place/cut out/fasten down kinda dual purpose? I’m envisioning the induction as part of a smooth countertop Remove it, along with a portion of counter top that can be placed out doors or elsewhere The gas cooktop then is either raised into position level or higher than counter surface or removed and relocated also That leaves a large hole that a second “sink bucket” or countertop can be put in that space

@@cathysupp9493 Hmmm...interesting idea. I do like the removable induction in the counter...you can take it outside at a campground if you have shore power. The Carey's van by Humble Road Vans has that. For me, I would ideally want the propane grill to pull out the side door on drawer glides or flip down outside from the back of the galley cabinet. Or maybe a slide out kitchen from the back door... Although if that's too difficult to engineer, I could be convinced to just have a small propane camp stove stored in the garage to keep it simple... Time and money are the limiting factors!

U-haul system more was automate than most, in which case the tech stays at the rig fussing the with the reliefs valve. On their system the relief valve was on the propane delivery system.
