Always make sure you watch anyone filling up your RV propane tanks to make sure this does not happen to you. While on a trip to the lake we stopped to get propane and our tank was way overfilled. This cause a potentially dangerous situation later down the road. Always know your tank capacity and watch the people filling up your tank to make sure they fill it correctly. 1 gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds. I hope that helps someone. Thank you for watching and happy camping. Jim

Dude.... just had a 30lb tank filled and exact same thing: dude stood their filling it without release valve open. Filled until it couldn't take anymore. We began hearing rhythmic hisses. Ripped the tank off away from vehicle and started looking for videos. major understanding----- the people who are working today rarely are certified( class ) so they are simply working a paying job. Be vigilant. Thank u dear sir

Never fill an LP tank more than 80%; this allows for expansion due to changes in temperature. Propane also has a 1:270 expansion ratio, and in an enclosed area, a rupture can cause death by asphyxiation or (obviously) fire and explosion due to an ignition source. I would contact U Haul corporate and explain that this location needs to be audited and the employees need proper training before they kill someone or incur a massive lawsuit.

Very good information. I fill tanks that we use on our fork lifts. We always stop filling at the first sign of a steady spray. We do get tanks supplied for heaters and torches. I have seen the overpressure valves go off on those in the summer. I am glad everything turned out good for you.

Yeah watching them fill is all well and good, if you have a completely empty tank. But when you don’t and you have a meter that is not 100% accurate, even a good one, you can’t rely on that message. There’s no way to know except you Gotta make sure they vented while filling. They don’t always do that.

Thank you Jim. Had the same thing happen. I was very lucky also he could have taken out the hole gas station. They should teach these people properly. I took my camper out to the country and let it out off the release valve. Cheers my friend

I want you to know you saved me lot of time looking for an RV repair service that could fix a propane leak at the last minute. Apparently the propane service didn't close that valve tightly enough which caused a slight leak and panic on my part :-) Thanks!!! Bill

A friend of mine got my tank filled in the morning when it ws cool outside. Mid afternoon it started popping off, most of it was going into the front window. Could have blown up. I never let him fill it again. Lesson learned.

My goodness this really scares me because a couple of days ago I got two of my rhino propane bottles that holds 20 lbs refilled at a propane station. The guy told me that he was going to put 35 lbs. And I proceeded to ask him, I thought they only handle 20lb? He told me, "for sure they can but the maximum they can hold is up to 60 lbs." So like an idiot I left him refill both of them at 35 lbs. The place is closed and I have nowhere to go or someone can relieve the pressure. I use these propane bottles for my heater buddy's.

I'm afraid I'm not sure about the 20lb propane tanks. I hope they are ok. Wish you luck.
@1980bcman
@1980bcman 2 года назад
I think you misunderstood him. It sounds like he was filling by weight not by volume. The way you fill by weight is you look for the tare weight on your propane tank and then you add the 20 lb to that way so most 20 lb propane tanks have a tare weight from 16.6 lb to 18 lb. So the person filling your tank would set the scale at 38 lb if your tank had a tare weight of 18 lb. That way when the scale starts to tip that would mean there's 20 lb of propane in your 20 lb cylinder. Forgot to mention that the tare weight is just another way of saying the empty weight of the cylinder.

This is no joke! I had always thought that the filling machine would prevent idiots from overfilling propane tanks. This is not true! I get a lot of tanks filled at a local gas station. Just today they overfilled one of my tanks, and it caused my propane regulator to freeze and release gas!! I thought maybe the regulator was bad, so I tried it out on a BBQ, SAME THING HAPPENED! The guys at the gas station NEVER unscrew the little valve when filling. they just go until the machine stops. I will be calling their supplier tomorrow to let them know that they are not properly filling propane tanks! Now i know to always watch when someone is filling your tanks! This could seriously kill someone!

"the IDIOT at the U-Haul" I'm watching this video because that happened to me yesterday. two 30lb tanks and he put a total of 17.5 gallons in the them. This is the first time I've had tanks like this and have never had them filled before. But sure enough, they are overfilled for sure. Apparently, there are plenty of them at U-Haul

What would cause the propane tank not to take propane
@richpetrelli2783
@richpetrelli2783 5 лет назад
Wow scary! Glad you’re all ok Jim. I routinely get told that the propane pump turns off the gas automatically when your tank is full. I have questioned that several times but presumed the tech knew what he was doing. In that case he did NOT open the overflow when he filled it. It turned off automatically but it seems like it took more than I usually get. Should they always open the overflow when filling? My onboard tank in my 04 Sunseeker is only 9 gallons is very easy to overfill because it’s small and fills quickly. Is it ok to fill with the overflow closed? Also, should they close the valve that allows propane to flow to the stove and fridge or keep that valve open. I have had it filled both ways. I think there is a lot of confusion Jim, about what is correct.

All ignition sources must be turned off in the RV and the engine should also be turned off. No one can be in the RV while it is being filled and the shut-off valve going into the system should also be closed. The overfill valve can be left closed or open depending on your system as far as I know but I have always seen it opened when filling the tank. I'm not 100% on that. The newer Tanks often have an automatic shutoff when they're full. But mine is from 1982 and does not have that feature or it is no longer working. Jim

Wish I saw your video. A gas station just overfilled my propane tank in my RV. I didn't check it, because last fill up was at U haul and they explained that they can't overfill it because of a cut off valve. Well, driving down the road, I had my battery on and propane on backup for refregerator. After I drove through WA and into Portland oregon, my alarms inside in the coach went off, for poisonous gas. I stopped. Turned off propane, and elec. Everything was closed late at night, so I stayed at a walmart. Next morning I had to check into a RV park for power and to check everything. My guage is pegged past full on my propane tank. I noticed that after I turned it on and propane was dripping out. I called roadside assistance, who charged my battery and followed me to a gas station to remove propane. The guage is still pegged. I tried to use my propane and my check light comes on...:-( So, either the last guy took out all the propane or this has caused another problem. I'm just glad my coach battery was dead and there was no spark. I also couldn't eat for around 2 days....Im just glad my dog and I are alive and I was smoking while I drove.....(I can't smell from an injury)

I've only had the 12gal. tank on my class c filled twice but both times the attendant did not open the pressure fill valve (not sure of the correct name). I asked why and they told me their filler has a automatic stop when the tank is full. I was always told to open the valve (not the safety valve) and stop when propane clears the orifice. Is the fill stop ok to trust or should I insist they open the valve? Thanks for the warning.
@fullmoonadventureclub
@fullmoonadventureclub 5 лет назад
The only way I've ever had it done was by opening the valve and stopping as soon as liquid propane starts coming out. Admittedly, I'm not an expert on the matter. There may be some automatic techniques out there that I'm unaware of. I wish I could tell you more but I just don't know. Thanks for the question and happy camping. Jim

The correct way of filling those types of bottles is by opening the purge valve and filling till it starts to come out immediately shut off the propane compressor and close the purge valve . And there are types that do shut off after they reach a set Weight value.

Propane changes weight with the temperature!

Weight does not change with temperature. only pressure. Science 101
@DeeJayHouser1
@DeeJayHouser1 8 месяцев назад
Yes, the weight of propane is affected by temperature. Propane liquid has a density of approximately 4.2 pounds per gallon (504 g/L) at 60 °F (15.6 °C) 1. As the temperature changes, the density of propane changes as well. For example, a gallon of propane weighs 4.11lb at room temperature, which is 77°F 2. Propane will shrink when it’s cold and expand once the temperature increases. It will expand by roughly 1.5% for every 10°F temperature gain@@adtopkek4826
