Welcome back to Aurora Tech Channel. Today, I will be reviewing the QiDi X PLUS 3 printer, another fast printer that runs Klipper firmware. However, unlike those Klipper bed slingers, this X PLUS 3 is a CoreXY, fully enclosed machine, making it seem to be a real challenger for the BambuLab P1P and the X1 Carbon.
Let’s take a look at the hardware specs. It’s a CoreXY machine with a build volume of 280x280x270. It’s not only fully enclosed, but it also has an actively heated chamber that allows you to keep the ambient temperature up to 65C, the enclosure also comes with LEDs.
The stock machine comes with 2 sets of hotends: one regular hotend with a copper alloy nozzle that allows for the printing of regular filament like PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, and one hotend with a hardened steel nozzle for printing Carbon fiber and other abrasive filaments. They are both high flow rate hotends that can reach up to 35mm/s³, and the maximum nozzle temperature can go up to 350C. The extruder is also a new design that uses a 9.5 to 1 gear ratio. For the cooling system, besides the hotend part cooling fan, it also has an auxiliary cooling fan installed on the right side of the machine.
The maximum acceleration is 20,000mm/s². It runs Klipper firmware using a 64-bit processor similar to the BigTreeTech CB1 or the Creality Sonic Pad. It uses TMC2209 with sensorless homing on the X and Y axis and uses an optical limit switch on the Z-axis. The Z-axis is supported by a dual Z-axis lead screw. For the motion system, the Y and Z axis are using linear rods, and the X-axis is using carbon rods. It comes with an inductive sensor for auto bed leveling, and the print surface is a double-sided PEI textured spring steel sheet. Other than the standard filament holder, it also comes with an airtight filament box that you can put a pack of desiccant inside.
The screen is a 5” touch screen. It supports WiFi and Ethernet network printing, and it has 2 power supplies that provide a combined power of 800W. It has a pretty nice appearance, and it has the same style as other QiDi printers. Despite the design of the motion system, the auxiliary fan and the hotend designs appear very similar to the BambuLab machines. Overall, the hardware specs seem pretty strong, and the machine is aggressively priced at $799. I would like to thank QiDi for sending me this machine to review, and with that, let’s get started.

I have had my X-Plus 3 for six weeks now, after giving away my older X Plus. I'm now wishing I had kept the older model. Issues with my X-Plus 3 are numerous, reliability and print quality being the top issues. Also, after homing the system and I jog the table to the top, the "ZERO" position is actually about 1.5mm from the nozzle tip. Sometimes, when I jog it to the top, the Z axis will shut off when it's within 10mm, which results in the table drifting to the bottom. Other issues, NO fail-safe sensors to stop a inaccurately homed table from crashing into the nozzle or into the frame at the bottom. To top it off, there is virtually no documentation beyond a very basic quick start guide. Finally, the older X Plus made noticeably better parts. If all you are going to make are low resolution parts (over .2mm per layer) then you might be okay with this machine. I have YET to make a .16mm layer part that isn't a huge FAIL! And this is from PLA. I'm not even going to try it with ABS or something else. IMO, the firmware on this machine needs work. When selecting parts to make from their thumb drive, the user interface NEVER displays the part on the first try. I have to make multiple tries (as in over 5 tries) before the user interface will display the part. Update: I HATE this piece of crap! My two year old X Plus was slower but at least it WORKED. I loaded their new firmware (per their suggestion), and it now causes the extruder assy to crash into the finished part, with the last crash resulting in the extruder cover being knocked off. There are only two possibilities, either their firmware is crap or their slicer is crap. This system is beta at best and should have never been released for sale.

As I trust your reviews completely for the honesty and thoroughness you employ, a vender must have confidence in the model they send to you for review. QiDi must feel the X-Plus-3 is going to pass your testing; from what you presented, it did. I can't recall you using superlatives so often; I, too, for the cost vs. features am amazed. I would love to support your work yet I don't know how to do that. Please let me know how as you saved me so much time and money; and now I get some laughs with your bloopers! I noticed that the bed leveling data showed about a 2 mm out of level across the X axis; perhaps the z axis lead screws could be 'adjusted' to reduce that amount even with the correction algorithm applied. Comments?

I just purchased the X Plus for $649 with free shipping and it arrived in 3 days. I'm basically a complete noob in the 3D area with an FLSUN SR being my first printer....and it's only 2 months old;-) The prints on the X Plus are usually much better than the prints coming off of the SR...but both are very good. The included Qidi PLA Rapido is very nice to print with. It is certainly better than the Amazon or Sunlu filaments, but not by much. I think the inexpensive filament will be fine for most jobs that I attempt. As for warping and bed temps, I noticed that the SR bed is off by about 8 degrees from what it says it is (using a digital temp gun). The Qidi bed is only off a degree or two. Both beds are much cooler near the edges, so glue may be necessary for those larger prints. Although I've been unsuccessful in loading the X Plus in Cura or Orca slicer for wireless printing, the included Qidi slicer works well and I really like this function. Not smart enough yet to figure out Fluid or Mainsail.....someday. Thank you for your videos and excellent reviews. You've been a big help to me!

I think the best route to go is get a p1p, buy the aux fan, hardened steel nozzle and gears, and there's even this high-flow nozzle you can get to make the bambu lab printers print faster and better quality at higher speeds. Also you can print the enclosure for the p1p. That seems to be the best route to take right now imo but I'm sure in a month or 2 there will be something better.
@Doogleraia

Remains to be seen what Bambu Lab comes out with next. With all the competition they're getting, they must come out with something unbelievable (again) to shock the system and further alter what is viewed as good value. Dual extruder (and an evolution of the AMS) and heated chamber, with bigger bed and possibly even doing something like a super fast conveyer bed printer would be a way they could once again stand out.

If the x-plus 3 has the cutter for the filament in the print head, where could the discharge of the filament take place for a possible multifilament system? if it doesn't have some sort of chute, any multifilament system would require the use of purge towers. The bambulab printers have been designed better and an example is the multiple functionality of the filament chute, which is used both for multi-color printers (allowing also to increase the usable space on the print bed by removing the purge tower) and all start of each print to clean the nozzle. The x-plus 3 has its concrete advantages but always lacks the attention to detail that would give it a feeling of a premium product.

I love your that your content is very thorough and the fact that you test across the board on competing printers. This model has a very similar construction (albeit smaller) to the X-Max. There's another reviewer that Experienced 'movement' in the Z axis Via Heat Expansion of .5mm after the initial probing and during the printing process. Is this something you can look into? Or noticed through your usage with the heated chamber?
@AuroraTech
@AuroraTech Год назад
I've switched to using an inductive sensor for Z homing, which provides better accuracy for the first layer. To do this, you can edit the printer.cfg file in Klipper. By default, the machine uses the Z-limit switch at the bottom and travels all the way down and back up for homing, which is not ideal. However, this is a simple fix and shouldn't have anything to do with the heated chamber.
@3dprecisionmfg
@3dprecisionmfg Год назад
@@AuroraTech That great to know! I'll try to get an inductive sensor as well for the X-max I have preordered. But I believe this issue had more to do with the z-axis screws being mounted to the thin base panel of the chamber, without a solid anchor to the framework. So naturally as the chamber heated up the plastic panel "lifted" the z-axis and the build platform .5mm mid-print. Are you able to place a dial indicator on the build plate and heat the chamber just to see if it moves?

I'm planning to start producing fairly large ASA parts later this year. These Qidi machines are really tempting. I was eying off the ifast, but it's so expensive. I don't need a 5k commercial machine, but likely need more heat than you get in an X1C etc. Hopefully they release something with dual extruders and this new speed tech at a more approachable price soon. If bambu added active heating, that would be a deal breaker. I am quite interested in the prusa xl, but it's not even enclosed.

Also, stock firmware won't let you set the active heater to 55 degrees, that's why I was asking. The X-Plus 3 is hot garbage when it comes to ABS/ASA/high-temp. ok cool, but with the bambu lab machines it wasn't mentioned how they are locked down on both hardware and software, and that you cannot quite mod it like an ender 3 v2 because it has proprietary connections and parts . how about this one? is it open source? or are you stuck with them for hardware and software? it's such a critical point as i want absolutely nothing to do with the company after buying their printer and perhaps buy spare parts directly from them or contact for warranty, i absolutely don't want to rely on them for slicing software or firmware, i DEFINITELY don't want repair that requires me to send back the entire bloody machine while missing it for weeks on end and be able to mod it without proprietary parts that may not be sold anymore in a few years from purchase.

Didn't see much about materials or build quality? The Bambu X1 has that steel frame, metal panels and a generally solid and hefty build. The interior of shots of Qidi's look like a lot of injection-moulded plastic panels and parts. The Bambu gives an impression of premium quality, this gives the impression of a budget copy. Sure, it's cheaper but you lose the really cool features (Lidar, Camera, and all the idiot-proofing error detection features) in exchange for a chamber heater. I think I'd rather pay the extra $400 to get the added features and the general build quality improvements. More importantly, however, neither is actually a must-buy anymore. The X1 was amazingly alluring when first launched and stood head and shoulders above the competition. But in less than a year we've seen multiple other manufacturers leveraging these ideas to compete, and all the machines released (or releasing) have ended up looking like 1st gen, early-adopter models. At this point I need to wait another year to see where they take this next. I want someone to combine all these cool features (lightweight hotends, carbon rods, lidar sensors, error detetction, multi-material) with dual extruders. The purge/prime wastage is the biggest flaw in the Bambu. Fix that and you'll be onto a winner.

Your reviews are the best on this Plattform. You started strong and got stronger and stronger and better and better. Your awesome. Thank you for your work and effort! Anyway the hotend solutions on the Bambu and the Qidi are still not satisfying and seem strangely outdated. The best solution so far is the still the 3dgence one (Which is probably 10 years old, but still an awesome printer) and some of the flashforge printers. Changing the hotend should be a matter of seconds and not of screws. In addition a modern Printer should have closed loop steppers. I hope the next generation will adress both issues. Thank you again

Yet another great review, thank you. Loved the outtakes at the end! You (and your brother) should definitely include a few from now on. The one question I have that wasn't addressed: can you use Cura, Prusaslicer, Superslicer, etc. instead of Qidi's version of Cura? I'd assume you can, but too many manufacturers are starting to go proprietary, so confirmation would be nice.

Did you need to re-adjust the z axis offset between different filaments? You can see on your purge lines on each print, some are squished ribbon and some are lifting from the bed.

I received this machine a while ago, and the firmware was not updated. Initially, it was using the optical limit switch at the bottom for Z homing, which was a bad idea. As a result, I had to adjust the Z offset occasionally. However, after updating to the latest firmware that uses the inductive sensor for Z homing, I no longer need to make any adjustments.

The X-plus 2 began silently shipping to people around Nov. If they're releasing a third itineration, then I want a replacement of the 3rd gen. My xplus2 has had so many things replaced or found to be manufactured out of spec. The Y access rails were not even parallel. I didn't get the x-max because of the improvements the xplus2 had, then in Jan silently released the xmax2. I would have spent the extra money with them if they were better at marketing..

Very interesting, I do like the fact that it uses klipper over a completely custom option. That should allow you to use other hotends and be less at the mercy of the company. I really like the fact that it includes the dry box and the second hotend stock athough as you said it would be nice if it had the fan to make it a lot faster to swap. Does it use standard V6 nozzles or use a volcano or a MK10 like the old version did or is it a single piece that all needs to be replaced, I couldn't really tell and they had no replacement parts available yet.
@ScuffedEngineer
@ScuffedEngineer Год назад
Assuming as looking at the website doesn't give the info, it comes with a 7mm wrench which would line up with V6. Standard or volcano length is still in the air.
@MaethorDerien
@MaethorDerien Год назад
@@ScuffedEngineer The difference is that the MK10 nozzles they use for the other printers still use a 7mm wrench but are different threads than the standard V6 nozzles. The MK10 nozzle are really uncommon common so you can't get things like a volcano or CHT nozzle in them. That said I honestly don't think a MK10 nozzle would even work with that kind of flow rate so I doubt that is what it uses.
@3DPrintSOS
@3DPrintSOS Год назад
It uses a nozzle that is a hair shorter than the volcano. Same threads and style though.

I always have the feeling I should have waited when I buy a new printer. Not so much here but on some other features that could be implemented rather easily. Just got the v400 and I feel like I am missing out ok load cell leveling of the Prusa MK4. Also hotswapable hotends would be a neat feature. It's not so much about the printer itself (would not trade it for the slow Mk4) but about the missed potential.

Hi Aurora, I was thinking about getting the x-max, now I'm undecided with this new x-plus3, I like the sturdy structure of the x-max but I don't know if the latest products have the double-gear extrusion, of the x-plus3 I'm afraid the reliability linked to speed and accelerations, furthermore, in addition to the doubts about the carbon guides, the diameters of those of the z and y axes are not known. What do you advise? Thank you

How difficult is it to update the firmware if QiDi came out with an update? Is that possible through a usb cable, or thumb drive, Or is it like the ender3 where you have to disassemble the controller to get access to the sd card slot?

@AuroraTech I bought a Qidi X-CF PRO last year for the high temp hot end (350c) so I could use high temp carbon fiber nylon filament to test print the hardware tools that I design. It was expensive but I liked that it was pretty much ready to use right out of the box because it came already assembled like the X-PLUS 3 in your video did. After watching your review video on the QiDi X-PLUS 3, it seems like it is better than the X-CF PRO but for half the price, am I missing something? Maybe you could do a QiDi X-PLUS 3 vs Qidi X-CF Pro comparison video so people wont over pay for a so called "carbon fiber printer" when basically any printer with a hardened, high temp nozzle will work just fine.
@AuroraTech
@AuroraTech Год назад
No, you didn't miss anything. The new Klipper series is better than the old QiDi, thanks to BambuLab. It has changed the market and now everybody is trying to catch up. From what I can tell, the solid aluminum heated bed in the old QiDi has been replaced with a standard PCB type heated bed commonly used on other budget printers. Apart from that, yes, the X-PLUS 3 is both cheaper and better than the X-CF.
