What should you wear when you're doing a track day? Do you really need a racing suit and what items of clothing should you avoid? Today on Cash vs Trash we find out with info from our expert!
In this new series, we'll get an expensive intake system, and a home made system, then get an expert to decide. Along the way, one car will modified with loads of cash, and the other one will be modified with parts found from dumpster diving, recyclers, second hand parts or the cheapest parts we can find.
Thanks to Josh from V-Sport for being our expert in this video

Hope you's go more into the differences of a motorcycle helmet compared to a car helmet on the second channel. I was told their main difference is the amount and intensity of impacts - motorcycle helmets are designed for a big hit (maybe a few if you bounce) and a car helmet is designed for many little hits as if it was contacting the roll cage.
@comradealexie

also, Motorcycle helmets have slide protection that car helmets don't, and car helmets have increased fire protection.
@K.E.L-117
@K.E.L-117 Год назад
Motorcycle helmets with ECE are increasingly rated for rotational resistance of your head inside the helmet (MIPS), shell design to reduce the chance that something will catch the road and snap your neck and impact testing from multiple directions multiple times not just single occurance single direction impacts against a roll cage in a car. These things (at the higher end and cutting edge) are designed for purpose after all

I'd just like to add, wool is naturally fire resistant and a better option than cotton if you have it available to wear for a track day. It's not going to be as good as a full suit, but it will give you a little bit of extra protection over cotton.
@grandy2875
@grandy2875 Год назад
was gonna say the same thing...we were always taught that 100% wool beats cotton every time, as far as fire resistance goes... and wet/damp wool is even better, so sweating up a storm in woollen underwear/long johns would be better than just your basic cotton reg's... 🙃🐨🇦🇺

Great video, something additional to remember is that safety is a system and you need the whole system for it to be effective. It is an all or nothing approach, for the utmost safety you need the full suit, gloves, shoes, helmet and HANS however you also need the supporting hardware like a cage, full containment seat, harnesses, fire systems and stripped interior. Another important note is on the difference between DOT or motorcycle helmets and SNELL or FIA rated helmets. Firstly the helmets are designed for multiple impacts against a roll cage, where as a motorcycle helmet is designed for impacts with pavement and a slide. Secondly the fireproof materials are very important and not always part of a DOT helmet.

I have heard a lot of tracks in Europe require cotton or hemp, long pants/jeans and long sleeved shirt or polo neck. Polyester is a quick way to get denied access to the track and it makes perfect sense. In the 90's when those hideous neon tracksuits were a thing, some kid on a camp at my high school caught a stray cinder from the camp fire and his whole leg caught on fire in an instant. Even with a cotton mesh under the polyester he had serious burns and a very unpleasant month or so of recovery. I have not worn pure polyester since seeing that, what a nightmare.

I usually wear (dedicated track) Helmet, HANS device, cotton long sleeve and jeans. I always wear the same gear regardless, unless it's a motorkhana. Usually just do hillclimbs and track days. If your car is MA logbooked, you need HANs device too.

I've yet to see someone mention this when discussing safety equipment but at a sanctioned race event you will have a safety marshal at every post, and ERT on standby so the time it takes for someone to come help you after a crash is minimized. But at your average track day you are sometimes lucky to get anyone to volunteer at the lookouts. If you have a serious crash on the back end of a track it can take ages before someone will actually get to you to help. You are better off having all your safety equipment on at a track day if you can afford it.

another thing about suits gloves etc is abrasion resistance especially when trying to get out of a car with broken glass etc all over the cockpit. i race here in the uk and we require the full kit even at club level but i always advise it to friends doing trackdays. at the very least a set of proban welders overalls which can be had cheaply and some gloves and if the worst every happens you will be very thankful for them and they will give you that extra few seconds to get out of the car, and any burns will be much much more minor! you always think it wont happen to you till it does and even on trackdays i dont ever go out without all my gear, its just not worth it

The important differences between a bike and a car helmet, is where the front face shield/opening is and the rear where the helmet ends- on a bike, you are expected to be at most sat upright, but more likely leaning slightly forwards with your head leaning backwards, so you look up out of the helmet and you need more space a the back so the helmet doesn't dig into your spine; whereas with a car, you are at most going to be upright, but more likely leaning backwards, so the opposite to the bike you will be looking slightly downwards out of the visor and need the rear to come further down to protect where your head is most likely to be.

The boots I think need more attention other than the fireproofing. I usually drive with my shoes off, you get so much more pedal feeling and movement with them off, but obviously its not as safe as wearing shoes, especially on the track. A racing boot is much lighter and thinner than a pair of regular shoes so it should retain much more of that extra pedal feel through your feet. that extra sensory information of feeling what the car is doing through the pedals is extremely helpful when driving fast.

stock air box has that long piping that is calibrated to increase power by creating drag on intake system, same as the exhaust system creates back pressure. when you switched to a k and n filter you eliminated that piping that was built into the stock air box. this opened the flow of air and removed the drag, that decreased power. now if you had kept an intake pipe, in similar size to the oem length and diameter but replaced the intake filter with the k & N one, then you would more then likley have seen the gains in HP you were looking for. marty didnt loose power because he had an intake pipe befoer his filter which allowed him to see an increase over oem instead of a decrease. buy a k&N intake pipe for your car and install it along with your k&N intake filter and you will see the results you crave.

Also, it's worth noting that Hans devices are made to use with racing harnesses and NOT traditional street car seatbelts.

Love the show, love the fairlady most of all. I know its like 4 years too late to name it but I thought Aussie Hepburn kinda fit. Love to see you do a Boxter or a 996 mod, definitely with a turbo! Best show on youtube because of the great friendship. Keep it up guys!

I compete in a top tier national championship, safety is one thing we don't mess around with. I live by one statement "I like my skin" I wear nomex underwear under the nomex FIA race suit as an extra layer which may buy you 2 - 3 more seconds. 2 people burnt to death late last year after hitting a tree competing in the races we do. When I take my 68 mini to a track day, I'll be wearing all my gear, because I have it, just in case.

Also another good option for a FHR is the simpson hybrid S. They can be used with race harnesses as well as standard 3pt seatbelts in road cars making it much more versitile. I find them more comfortable than the hans devices as well
@ragweedmakesmesneeze

And it's my understanding that you CANNOT use a Hans device with standard seatbelts.
@toddxhiggins
@toddxhiggins Год назад
@@ragweedmakesmesneeze correct. Hans are only compatible with harnesses. The Simpson hybrid s is the only FHR that is compatible with 3pt seatbelts

Me and a mate have a tarmac rally Mk1 Toyota MR2 which we run at clubman events. Rear 3/4 visibilty is tricky enough just with a helmet on (open tace). Add in a HANS device and it's impossibile to look over your shoulder at merges and splits to look out for other competitors.

Yeah I'm not a fan of HANS. It's so uncomfortable. I have to get someone to close my door for me when I'm strapped in. Seems less than safe.

Hans device. Do it for Dale... edit- afaik, It's more about the forward movement of your head if there's a sudden deceleration force. In other words, your face won't hit the steering wheel whilst your shoulders are still strapped in. end game.

I’ve spent thousands on race boots over the years yet by most successful race weekend was when I forgot my boots and had to buy some £30 boxing boots because they looked the same. 😂

Performance wise fancy race wear makes no difference but in a fire you won’t give a ship about any amount of thousands.

Just FYI for the US watchers - full face helmets are required in any event sanctioned road racing organization. Someone's face got burned off, now no open faces. Also, even in AutoX, motorcycle helmets will get you kicked out.

Most countries outlaw gopro or non (helmet) manufacturer camera mounts on helmets. Should probably mention that given how often Marty's helmet was shown as "ok"
@williamheard8496
@williamheard8496 Год назад
That seems rather silly. at least for full face. It’s not like the mounting system is rigid enough to damage a quality Shoei or Arai

Racing Boots, you missed one of the biggest differences. Which is their very thin yet firm sole which allows great feel on the pedal. They also very slim to allow better feel in single seater cars which can have a tiny pedal box with pedals very close to each other. Given both these reason above, they also make heel-toe much easier. They also have a rubber heel that has a consistent curve which allows you to grip the floor (most race cars do not have a carpet) and help not needing any foot movement between pedals or positions. Just don't stand/walk around in them all they as horrible for that! :-)

Showing up to a Sunday track meet in a largely stock, yellow Suzuki Swift, wearing colormatched pro safety gear. Yup, you're definitely being that guy! 🤣 On a more serious note, if your car is stock, fire is not really much of an issue since you can still get out of the car easily. The danger in that case comes if you flip your car, and in that case i'd rather have a full cage and proper seat rather than that yellow suit, they cost almost equally as much after all. Here in Sweden a lot of guys just race in Blåkläder, fire retardant working clothes, made for welding in and such.

A good poverty-tier set of fire safety gear can be found at Army/Navy surplus stores. One of the requirements for combat uniforms, particularly for vehicle crewmen, is that they smolder and not burn or melt. Flight suits in particular are a good way to get into full-coverage Nomex for as cheap as possible.

Here in the USA, the Hans device became mandatory in NASCAR starting in 2002, after veteran NASCAR pilot Dale Earnhardt Sr. died on track in 2001, when he hit a wall at 155-160 MPH(249-257KPH),he refused to wear the device, which was optional at the time
