This $9 Desk top from IKEA is insanely cheap! But tearing one apart shows the interesting engineering inside that table top from IKEA so light, cheap and somewhat environmentally friendly.
Only one IKEA Linnmon table top was harmed during the filming of this video:
www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/pro...
If you want to learn more there's also a really good video from National Geographics called "Ultimate Factories IKEA" but I can't find a proper link to the video.

Back in college days, we did a presentation on IKEA. They're a very efficient company when it comes to choosing the materials for their products and manufacturing. Looks high end but low cost material.

Yeah I agree! Also the efficient packing to save space and modular design to re-use the same parts on different products. It's fascinating
@rorgy8186

Michael Nguyen It's quite an impressive business strategy making their furniture and products modern and aesthetically pleasing to the eye yet using terrible material :) IKEA countertops don't last long and it's better to invest in a pricier REAL wood countertop or simply buy some wood at your local wood shop and make one your self. Even better to get a large thick branch without spending any money would be a better option in the long run than using IKEA "wood" products. If you don't have the necessary machinery to craft what you need then there might be a public workshop near you or slightly farther away that you could use. A hell of a lot better investment than to spend money every few years for the same product just to have it fail on you and then replace it again.
@rorgy8186
@rorgy8186 7 лет назад
Indeed but it's the softer solid wood which isn't as durable than the ones you could buy and build your self. My point still stands and the majority of their products are either paper cardboard, particleboard, or fiberboard. IKEA sells solid wood at a low price? Would you mind if you send me some examples?

weinerschnitzelboy you make great points, but I was gifted my cousins furniture they got from their parents. Made in the 70s I think, nothing broke! There's some wear around the veneer, (very expensive walnut), but honestly I like the charm. If I wanted cardboard, which I'm a huge fan of, I'd cut up some boxes to make this ikea the way I like it.
@LiLBitsDK
@LiLBitsDK 5 лет назад
and their stuff isn't durable at all, paid a fortune for a "nice looking" desk, took a week and the top was losing it's paint, 3 months later I bumped into the side of the cabinet while sitting at the desk and it cracked... never again expensive trash.

The honeycomb pattern inside the desk is an adapted design of something called a torsion box, most commonly used in carpentry and furniture building! The structure gives you the strongest, flattest workspace while keeping materials and costs down.

Just a note that the particle board does not extend down the full sides of the table as suggested in the drawing in this video. Rather there are square blocks in each corner to take screws for the leg plates. In case anyone is thinking of fixing two or more of these together just be aware that fixing plates can only be securely attached in the corners where the particle board is situated. I managed to squeeze them in immediately next to the leg plates and found that the particle board extended just far enough to get a good fixing.

I love this desk, I have the white/brown wood one and have been using it for about a year now. It's a perfect size and very sturdy. I don't know why people think it's loud, maybe I'm just a quiet person but I've never experienced issues with being loud while working on stuff on my desk.

I got the 200cm x 65cm version of this desk and in the centre it has a 13kg ultrawide monitor and my tower is also sitting on the desk. I haven't noticed any sagging whatsoever. People also say it marks up easily but I think some people might be a bit heavy handed as I've not experienced any marking. I was really surprised at how light the desk is and how strong it is. particle board tends to sag after using with heavy loads. I think paper fill is a good option considering price point plus the fact that particle boards are heavier. If planning on having a very sturdy table, mdf or even real wood(perhaps recycled) is a nice option.

If you wonder what is the width of particles board on both sides (when the legs are screwed in) it is about 12.5cm - I figured it out (counted) from 0:59 moment. The distance between the screws for leg is 5cm. I measured pixels distance between screws in leg and the particles board width shown in 0:59 and that made it about 12.5cm

very informative video! im making a hanging desk product and im thinking about what materials to use. Basically, the desk part would hang off of the wall hanging structure at 90 degrees, however there is no support like table legs underneath the desk part. I do have piston hinges to support the desk panel on top to the wall hanging frame, but do you think this paper fill material would be strong enough with no support underneath or should I use something like MDF? The benefit or the paper fill that I can see is that it is light and easy for the user to lift up back to a vertical position against the wall.

I'd go butcherblock. Also a solid core door would work well.

I bought a 150cm one to put atop my adjustable standing desk. Do you think it'd work if I screwed in directly into the particle board?

I'm thinking of drilling a couple of 2" holes in it for cables to go through, so that I can flush the end of the table to a wall so it doesn't vibrate. Good idea?

So I'm looking into getting the 55in ver. of the linnmon desk. I have a PC (45~50lbs), and dual monitors. Would that be too much weight or am i good?

Do you have any entertainment stands that won't break the bank? I need a fairly small one to fit my TV and two gaming consoles. The one I use now is 5+ years old and is sagging a bit and it worries me lol
