The 36 minute film tracks the flood waters from the bursting of Bilberry Reservoir to Holmfirth and beyond. It focuses on the individual human tragedies caused by the flood. These have been brilliantly and sensitively illustrated by the artist Jenny Hinchliffe.
The whole valley was touched by the disaster and yet today, many people living in Holmfirth know little of the flood of 1852. This is not too surprising as no substantial monument or memorial exists and the graves of the victims are unmarked and unregarded. Perhaps this little film will increase awareness of what was not only the greatest tragedy ever to befall Holmfirth, but also the greatest crime.
Mike Wade filmed, scripted and produced the film. His previous films about Holmfirth include 'A Wall of Water: The Tragic Past of Holmfirth Summer Wine Town' (2014) and 'The Changing Face of Holmfirth: Summer Wind Town' ( 2010).
