While I agree often plastic packaging is wasteful and excessive, some of it greatly helps reduce food waste. For example, wrapping a cucumber in a thin layer of plastic extends the average shelf life from 3 days to 14, which helps reduce food waste (and carbon emissions) and has serious cost reduction implications for businesses.
@lolaash9503

@@emilyhniebergall8975 you do have a point! However that also can go both ways. Some people buy the stuff in plastic which most of the time is a bigger amount of the produce they need and that sometimes doesblead to food waste

I think a huge issue with spreading zero waste awareness is that a lot of people think that they’re being attacked? So I really like how you brought up that it’s the big companies’ faults, because it really is hard for people to go zero waste when people with money and power don’t give a shit
@zsejkemore1794
@zsejkemore1794 5 лет назад
Hey Sara :) I have to disagree with you :) every little change matters in my opinion and it's not so hard to go zero waste if you are persistent. It's true, that big companies have a huge impact on the environment, but i consider, firstly, we have to change our style of life maybe we will get there to have an impact on big companies too :)
@liliths_gf3075
@liliths_gf3075 5 лет назад
zsejke more oh I absolutely agree that it’s important to try. My point is just that big companies cause way more pollution than any individual, and they don’t even try to do better. I work at a Whataburger because it’s the only place around that was hiring, and the amount of plastic that I’m forced to throw out every day is panic inducing. And that’s only me. There are probably thirty or forty other employees just at the one I’m working at and each one of them has to go through maybe eight pairs of gloves every shift, more if they accidentally touch something or go on break or to the bathroom. Then there’s the plastic packaging, the cups we have to throw away, the straws that fall on the floor, not to mention all the food waste. If they just switched to recycled cups and paper straws that would at least be a start, but they don’t give a shit. And for every customer who says no when I ask if they want straws, there’s 100 others who say yes. If Whataburger took the first step and switched to paper straws then those 100 wouldn’t be an issue. Do you see what I mean? It’s very important for us to try, but if the people in power don’t care then how much good can each individual really do? The companies who are switching to greener practices aren’t doing it because we want them to, they’re doing it because the people in charge of the companies give a shit. I mean, some of it is influenced by us, but so many companies don’t give a shit. People who are poor or uneducated can’t be blamed for the actions of major corporations who know full well what they’re doing.

Kate W trust me, I have watched all the videos and read all the books etc. I know eating a Whole Foods, plant-based diet can be very cheap. However, it would be presumptuous and ignorant to disregard price as a factor for the average American. The vegan RU-vid bubble is very unique in that many are satisfied by only eating Whole Foods, or their 20% “unhealthy” foods are still healthier options. Veganized options are expensive compared to its non vegan counterpart- including milks, burgers, etc. Vegan restaurants are more expensive. Organic foods are more expensive. You get more for your money buying a bag of chips than fruit. This isn’t veganism’s fault, but rather supply/demand, the culture, and the government’s. Regardless, it needs to be accounted for. Its important for vegans and those who want to go vegan to not only show ways veganism can be cheap (which is GREAT!) but also work to make veganism cheaper- whether that be by starting a business, spreading veganism to increase demand, going into law to lobby for change (ie placing a tax on junk food and using the revenue to offset the prices of healthier/vegan options), etc.

Hello, I’m a fellow broke college student on a meal plan. I went vegan a while back during my freshman year and found it incredibly hard to find time to cook, meal plan, grocery shop, and balance school work at the same time. I live in the Midwest, so some vegan foods aren’t a thing, very hard to come by (like a good vegan cheese!), or just plain expensive. I eventually figured it out though! It’s all about finding out what works best for you. :) All that matters is that you’re trying and learning on the way.

Unfortunately vegan alternatives are expensive especially with brand name products so I buy store's own brand and only buy vegan cheese, vegan ice-cream occasional for a treat. Vegan cafe's and restaurants are expensive but if you go to non-vegan takeaways, cafe's and restaurants their vegan options can be cheaper than vegan only places.
@josiesteed7573
@josiesteed7573 5 лет назад
Price is not a limiting factor for the MAJORITY of Americans. I agree vegan restaurants and substitutes are generally more expensive, but if you know what to buy you can 100% afford to be vegan in America. You may not be able to afford going out as often or having vegan cheese but it is less expensive overral, in the US at least. Its also important to realise you can get a bag of lays for 25$ cents at walmart. Many chips and junk foods happen to be vegan and are cheap. Its all about educating the public on their opitions. I like you idea of pushing for cheaped substitutes. :)

In the order of your grocery presentation my thoughts about your concerns about too many onions: + Put slices of fresh onions onto your burgers to add crunch and freshness, + enrich tomato salad with fresh coriander - and crunchy onions (rings or chopped), + add roughly chopped onions to your wok noodles with vegetables, + add pureed onions to your chick pea masala for a deeper flavour and tanginess, + consider fresh onions in the wraps to maybe add crunch, freshness and tanginess, + enrich your tomato sauce with chopped or pureed onions, + before you prepare fried rice you might want to deep fry diced onions (until brown and crispy; be very careful to not burn them) to add texture and roasting flavour to the fried rice, + mushroom soup with black pepper and chopped or pureed onions (depending on the type of soup (watery or creamy)) and diced or mashed potatoes (seperately or incorporated, again depending on the type of soup (watery or creamy (very rich when mashed potatoes are incorporated (goes very well with your toasted (garlic-) bread))), + make French Onion Soup. Onions are underrated, often ignored or simply forgotten. Onions are good and healthy. Investigate on them, you vegans in particular should know about your food. Does your ALDI-UK provide separated rubbish bins in the exit area for you to dispose packaging waste like plastic or cardboard packaging (and batteries) ? [Edit: Layout/sections]

Lidl are meant to be introducing a 5kg box of wonky fruit and veg for only £1.50 which I think would be super great if you do Lidl in this series. Plus the added bonus of minimising plastic and food waste which I know you’re passionate about. Also another series idea it would be great to try and see you do a weeks worth of shopping at each supermarket with zero plastic and interesting to see how much more expensive it would be comparatively :)

I absolutely admire you for being realistic and true to budget. So many videos like this can be a bit click-baity which is frustrating for people that can’t afford to go outside the lines in terms of budgeting. I am looking to transition to a plant based diet and you have truly inspired me. Thank you so much 😊

You are just amazing. Your recipes are lifechanging. I'm taking care of a teenager niece right now and suddenly I have to cook more (but don't have much time) and healthier. Last time I made your one pot zucchini pasta. It was delicious. Also, unlike many youtubers, you are so natural, so honest in what you do. Like you're not afraid to spend little on shopping and show it on youtube. And say: ''yes, that's what I did at uni, I only had 15 pounds a week''. THank you a lot for every single youtube film.

You’re not alone on veg and fruit in plastic, a lot of stores in the USA do it too. You can chop up some onions and put them in a freezer container but use small ones for use later which is really easy. As much as I hate plastic bags, the small ones are not bad and you can wash them out and reuse them. Saw my mother do that yrs ago when I was a girl, now I’m 72. Love your video, and just found you and subscribed. Trying to become of a less meat eater to start. Have a great week.

Even before going vegan i realized that I spent way too much at the super market on a daily basis. I've reignited my passion for cooking and am now spending on average 4£ a day, and with better meal planning instead of deciding what to eat on a whim, i could bring that down further. This video is a great help and jumping off point! Thanks so much ^^

Chop up all of the onions and fry them. Then freeze them. You can freeze individual portions of onions into bags...(I know, more plastic. However you can re-use the plastic bags) Alternatively, freeze all of the cooked onions in a container and break off the amount you need for a meal. No waste. I hope you find that useful. :)

Fab video. If you buy too many onions - or any veg for that matter - just slice or chop them up and freeze. I used to be under the impression that you have to faff around blanching veggies first - but you don't. It took me a while to realise. The amount of plastic is shocking you're so right to point it out. Would love to see more of your budget vids :)

Definitely horrid amount of plastic and I've find it frustrating too the lack of loose veg/fruit/nuts (especially nuts!) in almost any of the major supermarkets. @@martinaz4509 Naturally that is so. As long as one does not always shop whilst the other always cleans. Providing it is thorough cleaning and not just surface cleaning. Luckily here in CH, sons are trained in all aspects of housework as are daughters. Works like a dream.
