I actually went vegetarian because I couldn't afford to buy meat anymore. It's been so long, that now that I can afford it, it disgusts me. I'm on my way to veganism, but I've learned from experience that I shouldn't rush it.

Same boat for me as well. When the US government partially shut down earlier this year it was either switch to healthy, whole, plant-based foods our starve. Meat is really, really expensive. Plus, after doing a whole30 in January, meat started tasting horribly disgusting. Accompanied with the research I've done regarding the health benefits, environmental impact and ethical views, I think I've made the right choice.

@diamondsofsix

True this. I work in a store and see plenty of people rip two bananas of a bunch rather than pick two singles. The singles almost always get thrown out. I sometimes put them in a bag together and reduce the price so that people will buy them, but then plastic inevitably gets involved you know.
@shabanaazeez4583

One thing I do with overripe/mushy bananas is freeze them! If you're ever baking with bananas, defrosting frozen ones is the way to go. For some reason the resulting cake/cookies/bread are always so much more moist/fluffy. You can also just make banana ice cream!

What i find the most expensive in a vegan diet are nuts (almonds are so expensive). Also almond milk or any other plant based milk is so expensive in France (around 5 euros i’d say). But what you spend more in a vegan diet is what you stopped spending in meat or fish which are really expensive as well. I don’t find being vegan really more expensive, what is incredibly expensive is organic food !!

Dried Corn kernels (I hope that’s the right English word for it, if not, I’m sorry) are relatively inexpensive (1-2€ per 500g) but make loads of popcorn!! I always get frustrated with myself that I’m not doing enough but this video really reiterates that sometimes it’s just not economically possible; and that is 100% okay! I love this video! We usually shop at Asian supermarkets and for the first time I've realised how amazing they are because the majority of their products, especially fresh veg and fruit are all loose, unpackaged, and incredibly cheap. Things like garlic, coriander, chillies and ginger are all very used in Asian cooking and much cheaper than supermarkets like ASDA, Tesco and Morrisons. Even condiments are made in large amounts but are so cheap and last ages....Anyway love this video! It was great to watch! :)

So true about the plastic! I am studying in the UK from the US this year and when I first got here I put a lot of pressure on myself to not buy plastic, but I've realized that with my budget and available time it's just not feasible all the time. I also like that you allow yourself to get a few things like biscuits (even if they come in plastic). And I like that you're honest about all of this because I feel like it's setting a really healthy and achievable example.

just to add to this point as well, you still could have gone through the scan as you shop tills as there is an option to scan things at the tills which you couldn't on the scanner. This is about what I spend each week for groceries as a recent graduate! Shopping by yourself is definitely much more expensive than sharing with a partner. Every time I run out of something big like olive oil or bulk coffee it absolutely massacres my budget. Plus, I work full time and commute by bicycle so I have limited time and a huge appetite for snacks at work like pretzels and cookies... Recently, I've been trying to grocery shop only 2 times a month and that has helped. I buy much less fresh produce, but it gives me more wiggle room to buy larger packages of things and just make them last longer.

thank you for thinking of your student viewers! This year I'm on my school's meal plan which is NOT ideal for a vegan, but next year me and my friend are living in an apartment style dorm and are VERY excited to have a kitchen!! It's so helpful to see that with a little effort we can shop vegan and on a budget! Thank you for all you do

I would really recommend if you're vegan and you're on a budget to go and shop in lidl or aldi.Ingredients like lentils are a lot cheaper,they also have a few fruits and vegetables that are quite heavily discounted-e.g.pick of the week in Lidl.

What I have found when shopping on a budget is that you shouldn't really keep to one store. Here we have plenty of apps that show what sales are in which stores. Also import stores have much cheaper fruits and veggies if you're nowhere near a farmers market. This is a really interesting topic though!

As someone on a super strict budget, having less variety in meals (like cooking two bulk meals per week and alternating) makes it a lot easier to do a sub $50aud budget!! Also makes zero waste easier (and I'm vegan too).

I love seeing you meal plan at the beginning. I feel like a lot of food waste comes from people buying what they like the look of when they’re shopping, and then realising they’re missing ingredients to make anything useful out of it when they get home/get it delivered. If you know what you’re going to make for the next few days, starting from what you’ve got left to use up and working from there, you hardly ever waste any food. Also keeping your store cupboard stocked with all the non-perishable spices and dried herbs etc. is important, because then you can always make something. I love doing my meal planning for the week!

It was refreshing to see you actually address that bulk buying isn't always available to everyone, sometimes there were times in uni that i couldn't afford bulk buying items even though it would have been cheaper in the long run, also not everyone lives in areas close to big supermarkets or have access to them.

Cook for 2; put the extra in the freezer or eat it the next day as lunch/dinner. It's what I try to do. Also buying for 1 month makes more sense than 1 week. Then you can get the get 4 for 1 pound deals, do bulk buys on all items etc. I also go for calorie/nutrition dense food instead of items like lettuce or cucumber (yup, they are luxury items in my life as they are 90% water) Also skip onions & garlic if you can; go for the powdered versions instead (if you must, again, for me they are luxury items!)

This video really motivates me to see if i can cut down on food cost because i always feel like that's the one area i simply can't cut in. But i should, because i'm constantly going over my monthly budget and i just don't want to keep taking money from my savings account. I'm very interested to see how you put the things you buy to use! I'll try to replicate what you bought and did to see how much it would cost me here in Belgium.

I enjoyed that and found it really helpful. I struggle so much, on a tight budget, with the cheaper things being in plastic. I must admit that, although I do make a list, I don't fully think through a meal plan for the week so I'm going to start doing that more. Looking forward to seeing you do comparative shopping trips to the different supermarkets and to seeing to make the meals from each shopping trip. This is such a great idea for a series of videos, thank you.

This was such a lovely find on RU-vid, thank you! I know I'm probably to late to add but I find that I can also price up online if needed and I also organise my shopping list into sections based on where they are in the shop (e.g. I know usually fresh produce is right near the beginning of our Tesco, so I write all of the fruits and veg etc together so I don't have to come back to the fresh stuff later halfway down the list) ^^ I also get my luxury item at the end to see if it'll add on to the full shopping price or not~

I'm a vegan student at uni and I spend £20 a week on groceries alone. Reading the comments, it makes me feel that I'm spending too much on food but I think I'm doing a great job. It's been hard since I've been spoilt at home (although my parents always were very conscious about what went into the trolley and always went for the cheapest foods) I eat a lot (and need a lot) and I make sure I have a very balanced diet. With £20, I don't buy any fancy vegan luxury foods but lots and lots of cheap beans and the cheapest fruit and snacks and grains I can find (mostly apples and bananas) and frozen veg. I do not feel restricted or ever hungry and I am always grateful for my parents support with this. I feel blessed. This video is amazing. Thank you for making it for us. It's making me think of spending less and questioning more when it comes to spending money on groceries i.e. ''Do I really NEED them or do i just WANT them???''

Saving money tip that I've found has helped me, if you can buy from bulk bins in your supermarket, or if you have a store similar to bulk barn in Canada shop there for items you use lots (basically you pay by weight) ! It's incredibly cost effective to buy things like oats, pasta, and spices in this way! Bulk Barn also lets you bring your own containers, or drawstring bags (just weigh them on the way in) so you can skip the plastic packaging! :)
