£1200 Car Insurance Cap for Younger Drivers? Cheaper Car Insurance or a Scam?

Recently in 2017 a petition was passed around online to get the MPs of the UK to discuss a possible cap of £1200 on Car Insurance prices for drivers between the age of 18-25 around the UK. This would mean the removal of some of the horrendous prices that have been terrorising young drivers for years now. With some drivers ending up with quotes of sometimes over £5000 for lowly powered Vauxhall Corsas and Ford Fiestas you can see why. However would it actually be as good as it sounds for new drivers?

I think insurance should start low, and if u have a crash then put the price up rather than making people pay stupid insurance premiums straight away
@taz874
@taz874 6 лет назад
but the thing is young new drivers are inexperienced therefore more likely to crash than say someone who has been driving for a few years. its all about risk if they started out low they would lose out from all the young drivers that end up crashing in their first year so it would probably just raise the prices for those experienced drivers
@MichaelFlatman

@@taz874 it's like your viewed as guilty until proven innocent with the current state of insurance. Flip it around, and it'll be fairer.

Yeah i agree because some new drivers chrash and are bad drivers that can pay stupidly high and ruin the insurance prices for other people
@James-ns6jm
@James-ns6jm 5 лет назад
They do go up if you have an accident. Problem is statistics show younger drivers are more likely to have a accident over other drivers such as those with no claims. Hence why people with no claims get cheaper insurance. For example if you drive a car that tends to get stolen alot then you will pay more than say your mate who drives a similar powered and priced car that doesn't. It's all statistics. But don't get me wrong they do abuse this as charge alot more than they should.
@andraspalanki6173
@andraspalanki6173 5 лет назад
You can not manipulate the market, if it costs £3-4k it has a reason for it.(it might be burocratic (not solely on the youngdriver)) And if you think that it does not, just make an insurance company, and offer a lower price, and make a lot of money off of it.

Paynos I disagree with the cap. If you think about it a rich kid could get a car worth £10,000 for there bday and another kid could get one for £900. If the rich kid crashed and the car is a right of. The insurance company would lose £8,800 at least , meaning the company would need to make that money up , which would be from the normal people who may never crashed or clam, this would be unfair. However insurance companies may like it as the ratio or kids with expensive cars to normal cars would show less expensive cars and meaning less crashes per 100 people (as an example) meaning they have to pay out less on expensive cars and the possibility to make more money is likely, especially as they would keep premiums at £1200 until 25
@TheNeelix24
@TheNeelix24 7 лет назад
Personally if the cap was a fixed % over the cars value for young drivers I would prefer it as then someone in a cheap car that they would just right off if it go in a crash would pay very little (the majority of young drivers) but the people in high value cars would pay more, this is similar to the current system , just a % cap would stop insurance companies stopping you from driving a car that statistically is more like to be claimed against and stopping young drivers pay loads in case they hit an expecive car.

I fucking detest uk car insurance firms the reason is as follows. - I had an accident, it wasn't my fault I. I initially made a claim through my insurance co. to claim through the other guys insurance. the guybat fault rang got in touch with me and said he wanted to settle with cash +extra money for the ball ache and inconvenience. I would have been given scrap value for my well maintained v low mileage pristine condition car which i needed to get to work, so i accepted his offer. I got my car fixed up and had some money extra for new bathroom and holiday etc. when it came to renew my car insurance i was fucking livid, and i mean proper fucking hyper-outraged. it nearly doubled. ive been driving for 30 years paying no claims protection for all that time. it counted for NOTHING!!! also, when getting a new quote the questions are - Have you ever been in an accident in the last 5 years "regardless" if it was your fault. I ticked yes, a list of options flagged up...none of them were relevant to me. and what's most infuriating is there is NO WAY I can explain my side of the story. I just left it blank and didn't fill it in. Underwriters and insurers explain yourselves, how the fuck can someone with no claims protection possibly be penalised so much after 30 years of driving without ever making a claim. if i was in a high street shop face to face trying to sort this out I would guarantee you woulďnt look me in the eye!!! your an absolute fucking shameful disgrace!!!

I think that if they do cap it at £1200 they should limit what vehicles they insure... so to band 1-10 so that the system isn't abused and young drivers end up behind the wheel of a 6.2 litre C63.

I failed my test 3 times back in 2008 when I was 18. I just gave up after the money it was costing. I've been looking at learning again recently, (I'm 27 now) I have done a few insurance searches for 1 ltr cars and I'm not getting any price under 2k. Ironically it's only £350 to insure myself on a provisional. The problem I'm finding is that most new driver insurance is for young drivers. @MenaceMedia
@MenaceMedia 7 лет назад
I think the £1200 cap is reasonable, but it should qualify to cars of a specific spec, so for example, cars that are less than 100bhp, 1.4 or less etc. So that beginners can start with small hatch backs like Corsa's, Coopers, Fiesta's etc. If it was a £1200 cap for a ST/VXR/JCW then that's unreasonable in my eyes.

So I bought my car before getting my license in Sept 2018, and the day after I tried insuring it and have paid the following: £356 a month for a 75BHP 1.4L 1999 Peugeot 206 for a month of RAC Black Box Insurance, then got tired of their scoring, switched to Admiral which now quoted me about £380, but since my dad had Admiral insurance too, with Multicar, he got it cheaper and me too, so I ended up paying £345 for the same car, with 8000miles declared, monthly. 3 Months into the Admiral insurance, I totalled the 206 in a triple, side-roll crash in which happily I was the only car involved. Few days later, I got a 110BHP 1.6L 2006 Peugeot 307 CC, and quoted with Provident for 500miles a year (yes, that little) at £298, so had to re-start my policy and cancel the old one. All fun and games, 2 months later I change car since I don’t like the 307CC anymore. I get a 59 plate, 120BHP 1.4L TB Alfa Romeo MiTo, very uncommon car amongst new drivers. I keep Provident since they have the lowest quotes for the car, and even with 5000 miles declared, so raised from only 500, I get it lowered to £258 a month, for a car that does 0-60mph in 8.5s. So re-capping, 0NCB, first month on the 206, £356, very common car for new drivers. Now on the MiTo, £258 a month with a car with twice the power, but way less common, only half a year after passing my test. Proves that the way insurance works in the UK is flawed. All insurances other than the first with RAC, have been and currently are without a black box.

dvd player the problem with that is you can buy an old rust bucket for £500 and then go and crash it into an aston martin or kill somebody with it
@collinslfc

The purpose of insurance isn't to cover your own car (although you can do that with comprehensive), the purpose of insurance is to cover you for the damage that you cause to others; either via injuries or property. The value of your own car is pretty much irrelevant.
@zm7169
@zm7169 7 лет назад
Collins LFC i get you. annoying thing is 3rd party and comprehensive quotes are nearly the same. only like 100pound diffrence...not a lot if you're talking 3.5k insurance

here in my GARAGE i think thats because sometimes the insurance will see it as you're not that bothered if you crash your car. and also sometimes bad drivers who have made a few claims will then opt for third party since fully comp is too expensive

Got an audi S1 2.0 petrol when I was 19, insurance quoted £1000 no black box but then quickly changed to £2500 with a black box but as someone messed up quoting £1000 no black box they ended up giving me that. I had been driving company car for 2 years which didn't give me 2 years NCB but did bring prices down as had held the license for 2 years.

In response to your concern of insurance companies charging everyone under 25 £1200 per year, just make part of the new law a compulsory no-claims discount of a certain percentage of their initial quote. My only concern would be companies raising the premiums of older drivers to compensate. I'm lucky in that I just rode motorbikes until earlier this year at the age of 31, and my first car insurance premium was £791, and I hope that with no-claims discounts it will keep getting lower.
@taz874
@taz874 6 лет назад
it just wouldnt work since they would no doubt raise insurance for more experienced drivers so in the long run you end up worse off since you would effectively be paying for young inexperienced drivers on the road. not to mention the fact that many young drivers could easily afford a 15 year old high performance car and well we all know how that would turn out.

I passed may 16th 2017 at the age of 29.. 1.4 16V Clio was around £1200 for the year.. as a first time driver being over the age of 25 definitely helped! lol god knows what quotes I'd have been getting if younger... it's the thing that put me off wanting to learn to drive for years.. that and slight lack of confidence in myself.. but the costs of everything at younger ages especially, was just no way I could afford it at that time in my life. I was at college 8am til 5pm for 3-4 years and trying to find a job to fit round that etc was hard work, so fair play to any younger drivers out there on the road and managing to pay mental insurance prices lol :)
