Really easy to install and starting at £150 Zemismart's Smart Home Curtain Track now comes in 3 flavours: Zigbee, Zwave and Wifi.
This video is sponsored by Zemismart, all opinions are my own.
The Zigbee curtain motor comes with a Zigbee switch and the Zwave curtain motor comes with a Zwave dongle and can be installed with or without a switch. Both Zigbee and Zwave motors can connect to smartthings, Amazon Echo plus and any other Zigbee or Zwave enabled hub, you can use whichever protocol you prefer and if you need help deciding then this video will help explain "What is Zigbee" and how it relates to Zwave and Wifi.
The Wifi curtain motor works without the need for a hub as it uses the Tuya Smart life service so if you don't have a smart home hub then you will still have an option without having to spend extra on a smart hub. The Tuya SmartLife service will allow you to control the Wifi curtains with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT and Siri! The Zigbee and Zwave options will allow you to connect to these services via your chosen Smart Home hub.
The electric track is top quality and I've had mine in place now for 8 months. This track is perfect for people in assisted living, or even just for smart home enthusiasts. I can't recommend them enough.

Hi Paul. I have to agree that automated curtains and blinds are one of the most useful applications of home automation. Helping with privacy, security, energy saving, protecting furnishings from sunlight, and able to control natural light through difficult to reach windows, what is not to like? You don't mention if these particular motors and tracks have the ability to move automatically to specified positions, such as 30% open, etc Alexa and SmartThings typically work with window treatment controls as though they are light dimmers and can do this, which is much more useful than full open, or close with perhaps a manual stop for in-between. Surprisingly many automated window treatments are not very smart with scheduled operations. They are typically set for fixed times, or at, or fixed offset from, sunrise and sunset (as determined by an Astronomical Time Clock for a given location). What is actually needed in my experience is something more sophisticated. My own system does the following instead: Open curtains & blinds at a fixed time in the morning, or at sunrise if it occurs later than this Close curtains & blinds at a fixed time in the evening, or at sunset if it occurs earlier than this I find this is very important in bedrooms to avoid being woken at dawn during the summer months. And to have the curtains closed at bedtime even when sunset is later.

I love this channel and the information is great. Comes in handy when I get a cheap customer that wants a Smart Home rather then using a proper URC Total Control, Control4 or Savant System. Thing is from a AV Integrator standpoint Z-Wave is the protocol of choice since more Devices have Z-Wave then Zigbee, not to mention it's easier to get everything working with one protocol rather then multiple protocols. From a IT Security standpoint WiFi is terrible to use unless you have say a pfSense box with a vLAN setup for the IoT devices. Not to mention with Z-Wave and Zigbee it can be used Localy and Remotely. Some WiFi devices can work localy but those are typically DIY devices or modified Devices that use a MQTT like protocol.

Hi Paul, couple of questions about these curtains...if you just want to manually pull them slightly closed or open will that work without triggering a full open or close? Thinking of the non believers in the family :) also can you just open one side and not the other? Thinking as the sun comes around the house that you might set it to gradually close one side and then the other?
@paulhibbert
@paulhibbert 5 лет назад
The remote can stop them halfway with the centre button, I'm thinking you could possibly create a routine that automatically stopped them halfway pressing the stop button a second or two after, but no ; there's no manual way to stop them halfway without using the remote or the wall switch if you buy the wall switch!

Correction: Zigbee is 2.4GHz, like WiFi. Biggest problem is Zwave has different frequencies for different countries, so me being an Aussie, there are limited number of Zwave devices, as we use a different frequency to EU and US. I think Zwave will be the Betamax, especially the Amazon Echo + and the v2 Show has inbuilt Zigbee. And thanks to your video, Paul, I bought the Zigbee version to tie it into my Home Assistant and Zigbee2mqtt setup. The price tag was great, much cheaper than the Xiaomi ones.

Another issue with wifi is the number of connected devices per wifi hub. I initially had a single wifi router and ran out of connections. Remember that every mobile phone, games console, tables, computer, printer, wifi storage device, watch, anki vector, etc uses a device spot. So if you’re a bit of a nerd for gaming devices (I and girlfriend both have each Xbox one, ps4, 3ds, vita, oculus quest, switch, iPhone, iPad, computer) then you could already be pushing the limits of your router and need to put in an extender.

‘Tis true. Or at least, a big part of the reason. I found this out when I was looking into the whole hd-dvd/blu-ray thing and trying to figure out who was going to win in that stupid game.

Holy $hit these things cost 255 Canadian dollars. Guess I better start saving my pennies... ...

Sadly, still a little expensive, I'd pay £100 for setup, though, I don't believe there is a Wifi setup for £100 at the moment.

Ibdobt know if you'll ever see something like this that cheap sadly. It has to be a strong motor for the weight of the curtains. I think this thing is a lot of product for its price tag. 😊

Can you close them manually, or suggest a robotic wife 😄

Hahaha, yes. You give them a gentle pull and they close themselves automatically which is also really cool! If the power went out you can still pull them without any effort too :)

isn't zigbee using 2.4GHz instead of the 800 MHz you specified in the video?

Depends on Product and location apparently! Was just looking it up now as I wasn't 100% certain. When I made the video I just did a cursory google as I didn't have any idea before I started.

OK, so your screenshot of your RU-vid comment? I actually realised for a moment that I tried to thumb up your retort. Therefore, blatantly my opinion counts for nothing and I don't deserve a vote!

OK. Time to be an idiot in the comments. If you have an RF device such as the broadlink, then the wifi version does seem best. Even though I have a SmartThings Hub, I tend to go for the wifi devices, because I'm more likely to find those onsale. For example, Costco Canada is selling the globe RGB-w bulbs for $29.99 for a pack of 3. I have a ceiling fan that is RF controlled, so I long since automated the basic on-off functionality. I just dropped the wifi bulbs into the same group on she who cannot be named, and now I have full voice control over the light. I can still turn it on and off at the switch. And the RF transmitter doesn't need internet to turn the light on or off. She who cannot be named needs the internet to respond to my voice, so I don't mind the fact an internet connection is required change the brightness or color. If we have an internet outage, which happens far more often than I would like, I can still use the switches normally, and my automation to turn on or off the lights still works normally through the RF broadcaster. About the only reason I might have wanted a ZigBee or Z-Wave for the bulbs is because each device also acts as a relay, increasing signal range. But to me it isn't worth the price differential. And I like the fact that if my SmartThings dies, I don't have to rush out and buy another right away to have that part of my automation working. BTW. If you really want local only control of a Tuya device, use the TuyaSmart app, and there is a way to configure it in HomeAssistant. If you want ITFFF control use the SmartLife app instead. There seems no good way to have both, but I haven't tried that hard. Also haven't really tested the HomeAssistant automation works when my internet is down.

Too expensive. I can build something better for a fraction of the cost of those overpriced products.
