#ev #vs #challenge
Hyundai Ioniq v Nissan Leaf 30kwh Tekna v Renault Zoe ZE40
This will be the first episode in a new series to answer the question: What does £15,000 get you as a family electric vehicle?
Many of our videos are in expensive Teslas and such like which make living with an EV very easy. They have good equipment, great efficiency and fantastic range. But what about the cheaper end of the market? What’s a £15k EV like? Is it up to family life? Is it only any good as a second car? What’s the real world range of these cars?
Well here we undertake a series of challenges Top Gear / The Grand Tour style, on a budget! 😂
FYI we didnt’t include costings at the time because rates vary so much and changing.
For 95 miles covered the Ionic used the least electricity at about 18kwh. That for me cost £3 In total but multiply 18 by your pence per kwh and there you have your recharging costs..
The leaf and Zoe used about 28kwh
We hope you enjoy. And by the way, dont take a any criticisms to heart, its all in the name of entertainment…
Thanks for watching!

Love the Zoe, it has a really rapid acceleration, takes off like a rocket even if it tapers off a bit towards higher speeds, has a boot good enough for anything you need, with a massive amount if you fold the rear seats, and the drivers seats are very comfortable. You can get a 2017 one with the big 41kwh battery for less then 10k with battery rental, and under 12k without the battery rental. Honestly amazing car and I'm completely in love with mine. One thing to know about it however that they didn't mention is that it's pretty difficult to jack up due to lack of jacking points, so if you change your tires yourself you'll need a jack with rubber pads to not damage the floor of the car.

Before I watch the video..... Excellent, well done Richard! I can't afford one of the new BEV's so it's either a company EV/lease or a 2nd hand car around £14-16k on a bank loan or HP. The Yorkshireman in me can't fathom paying around £15k just to rent/lease/finance a new car for 4 years only to give it back again, so this is the review/advice I'm really after!
@stuartburns8657
@stuartburns8657 2 года назад
Yup. The whole lease thing always makes my head hurt. 1st time you trade in your traditional HP vehicle. 2nd time around you have nothing, so unless on top of the lease you've been saving for another deposit ON TOP OF the lease fees you are worse off?
@Ligre667
@Ligre667 2 года назад
@@stuartburns8657 depends on the type of lease, HP by the time you get to the end of the term you have paid off the cost of the car plus the percentage on top for interest. So you own the car after 3 years or 5 depending on how long paid off. Bangernomics hard to beat, especially given how economical it is to run. I was keen to swap 18 months back, but sitting down and doing the man maths, it didn't add up. Even the fiesta (long since paid off) trying to get a decent zoe or leaf. Madness. Outlaying 7-8k for vehicles that have done 50k miles. The loan repayments, snd electricity isn't free either. The 28kwh Ioniq actually has a similar size battery than the 30Kwh Leaf.... Nissan quote the full battery capacity of 30kwh, but you can only use about 28kwh of the battery to protect it, whereas the Hyundai quotes the Usable capacity of the battery 28kwh, its full battery capacity is something like 32kwh. i have a 2017 30kwh leaf and it has lost about 20% of its capacity over 50,000 miles due to lack of battery cooling the Ioniq is the much better car

Enjoyable video to watch with the light hearted banter. I have a 19 plate 40Kw Leaf and a 20 plate Zoe ZE40. For comfort and refinement the Leaf wins hands down. Its such a nice quiet drive and ive owned Jaguars to compare it to. A Lad in a Golf GTi was embarrassed at lights by it. The Zoe is more efficient getting around 25 miles more range. Its more of a runabout than a family car but it would do it. Both great cars to live with. Looking to upgrade the Leaf when the New Kia Niro comes out. I'd like a bit more range.

It charges slower then the old ioniq at 50kw max and tbh that is only for a few minutes before dropping to 36kw. It would be interesting to see what the old Vs new is like on a long trip as I think the old one would beat it being quicker to charge and more efficient. I have done 107,000 miles in my 40KWn Zoe in just over 4years, it is surprisingly spacious and I have managed 180 miles on a single charge so the range is pretty good. The main issue I have had is reliability, it needed a new main drive motor and reduction gearbox at 97,000 miles, fortunately it was covered under 100,000 mile warranty because I hate to think what the cost would have been. The battery has been okay, I think I have lost about 15% range, I always charge it to 100% and regularly run it down close to zero so it has had a hard life.

As the owner of a 2015 24kwh Nissan Leaf Acenta with 10 capacity bars that can still get over 80 miles range in good conditions, I'm amazed and mystified as to how the 30kwh Tekna struggled to get 94 miles when it's still got 12 bars. That car should be 110 miles all day and topping out at 130. In 2017 my 24kwh Leaf averaged 106 miles with 12 bars on an 890 mile round trip to Edinburgh. How did he get the Leaf to lose that much range? Even allowing for the fact that the car should still have about 10 miles in it when the display goes blank, that still leaves you short of the minimum expected range. He must have Clarkson's lead feet.

@@raceworx yes. Mine could. The best I saw over a 10 mile trip into London (so mostly 20mph) was over 10 miles p/kWh. Its not quite as efficient as the Ioniq, but not far off. Honestly, I expected a lot more from this video. Even 3 challenges, but serious ones for family cars. Think along the line of: - see who can fit 2 child seats and 4 suitcases the fastest - drive the to an interesting weekend destination 300 miles away - maybe a quick drift track competition to see which car is fun Even just these 3 challenges would've been enough for a great video. Talk about dimensions and equipment during the practicality challenge, range and charging on the journey challenge, and powertrains and suspension while doing the track challenge. And that would've been a fun, comprehensive comparison test of 3 EVs a lot of us are considering. Instead we got "go there, get the next destination, go there, get the next destination, go there, get the next destination...". I'm really sad to say that I didn't enjoy this episode.

You should know that the Leaf does NOT have bigger battery than the Ioniq... Yes they are advertised with 28 and 30 respectively, but Ioniq is 28 kWh usable (30.5 kWh total), while the Leaf is 30 kWh total (27-28 kWh usable). Yes, the Leaf does show average consumption, but as with all other cars you have to reset it first, sounds like that was not done for this test.. It is not trustworthy tho, but may have been on the type of driving you did. Seems to be off if you have a lot of regen-driving. For a fair test, interior temps should be the same..

The biggest problem right now is the charging infrastructure, it's enraging. Chargers that don't work, require apps and Internet access, too few of them. I have a PHEV and it's been next to impossible to find anywhere to charge. Supermarkets don't have them. Massive services have 2 and already the wait is long to get on one. It's going to be tough until some serious charging hubs with 100 bays appear.

@RSEV
@RSEV 2 года назад
Well that’s fine. We’re only trying to demonstrate the options. That 92 miles of town and school run type stuff cost about £5.50 so that’s cheaper than fuel. Then there’s no real maintenance cost. And also not much to go wrong so don’t complain when you need clutch, exhaust, dpf etc. and then residuals, in the last 2 years they’ve not lost a penny in depreciation. So they’re super cheap to run.
