It was in Spain. Two summers ago near a village called Santa Olivia

I have some friends who have a massive family with many nieces, nephews, cousins etc and for 40 years now they have all rented a huge old house near the sea in Britanny where they would spend the summer. A few years back the house was sold off so they clubbed together and bought another huge place near the old one and again spend every summer there and other holidays with kids in attic dormitories and adults preparing huge tables of food. One of the children who is now in her 30's is an actress and has purchased a huge chateau with outbuildings and she has done the same and the house is full of people and she invites young actors to rehearse. She is also running the small farm and producing huge quantities of her own produce, very community. At the beginning of lockdown I practically ran from my old house and moved further south to warmer weather ( France ) and rent a huge old place sight unseen that is attracting lots of friends due to the weather so I hope in some small way it will turn out a bit like this.

Ha ha, we know what you mean. We just think these properties need life in them so if you have enough family and friends that's perfect.

Powerball winnings would not be enough though, sadly. Typical houses like mine with about 3,500 sq. ft. require a lot of upkeep. I pay for pool service and lawn service, and it is always something else costing $$$$. I spend more money in Home Depot than anywhere else including the grocery store. Now take a place a hundred years old or more and 8 times as large. You have to have staff just to keep it clean. Try heating it, when I lived in Ireland there were two electric meters, one for day and one for night. Night rates were cheap, day rates were like 6 times per kWh I paid in Oregon last year. British Isles are surrounded by water, and when you do not heat that level of space you get a lot of mold, or as they call it rising damp. The taxes are just insane. Then there is the grounds, and a staff for that. Because it is grade listed you are heavily restricted as to what you can do with the property, it is like being married to the government, you can change nothing really, it can literally take years to get permission from the bureaucracy to cut down a tree over 6 centimeters wide. Seriously. Everything built before 2008 is basically obsolete here even now, never enough outlets, poorly insulated, not enough counter space for all the items in kitchens, cheaper building products used, try updating a place built in another century. And labor costs there are outrageous, you don't just pay workmen an hourly wage, you pay their NHS premiums, taxes, and a lot more. All these older places either get torn down or they are updated at HUGE expense, and many years. But they never stay private residences because your payroll to keep it running is like more than half a million at bare minimum. So they get abandoned or turned into commercial properties. Even Middle Eastern royalty has been known to abandon such places. When I lived in Ireland I saw some old unlived in places that have been on the market like this house, for what seems a cheap price, but the price is based on the land value, the buildings are not a factor because only an insane person would try to restore them and the cost to tear them down (including legal costs to even get permission to tear them down) is a net negative to land price. Even if you could afford to buy and restore/update, and hire staff needed it would take years to ever get to live in it. If a property is worth $5 million the house cost to remove the building would mean they can't get more than $4 million. Check out Sotheby's auction site (mostly places you can move into now) or search for like Mansions Ireland, or Scotland etc. You will find a lot of places like this in every state of repair. But the $$$$$ asking price is only the very beginning, no matter what that is you can double it before you ever move in, and in older longer abandoned places if you do not have $100 million you can forget it. There is a reason these places go for less than the value of the land.

You'll have to get them to chip in to pay for the atrocious heating bills for starters then.

There is a reason why such a home is at that price. A small alert ent could cost 4 times that in London.

Oh wow that's cool, Carbisdale was up for sale a few years ago wasn't it? We haven't visited it but it looked like it was in an amazing location.

To be honest you would only plumb part of the building as maintaining such a system would require in house plumbers.

Although there are sometimes unfortunate circumstances which lead to people having to sell their castle or chateau (think divorce, bankruptcy, split inheritances, ill health with no remaining successors etc) there are also an awful lot of owners who sell for positive reasons such as the purchase of an even more impressive property, business success in another region or country creating a requirement to move/emigrate, a new relationship requiring a move to another location or the arrival of children meaning a need to move closer to schools and services). Always the point with huge homes....you have to be a multi-millionaire to afford the running costs of such a place....in the end that is why there are so many of them available - yet I hope they are lived in because they are all too beautiful to be wasted ! Truth is there is no way one family could occupy enough of this place to make it worthwhile....and that was how it was when they were built...the only reason they had so many bedrooms was because of the constant visitors & their need to impress !

@@veronicaroach3667 hi thanks for your comments. You’re partly correct but you don’t need to be a multi-millionaire to own a huge home. We know plenty of owners who aren’t. Some of them just have good incomes and/or generate income from either the main property or other properties on their estate.
