I compare the ever popular Cobra SZ SpeedZone Driver against the new TaylorMade SIM Driver to see what the difference is. Remember the price difference is approx £120 with the Cobra being cheaper than the TaylorMade!

The first two straight shots with the Cobra (excluding the open face fades) were right there with the SIM!!

BOBBY - but the fades on the SIM didn’t spin up and we’re just as long as the straight ones. That’s where Cobra couldn’t match it, and fIr me that was the most impressive thing about the TM. They have a winner IMO

Really enjoy your channel and perspective Michael. Best takeaway for me was your admission that you were not hitting it in your usual fashion and missing right with both clubs. Glad to know someone of your caliber has "off days" as do us mere mortals. Something I think we can all take away is that day to day we won't hit even our best fitted clubs perfectly. I was recently club fit and the SIM did not suit me at all but the Callaway Epic Flash did. I was surprised as I generally like TM products and have had multiple TM drivers in the past.

I spent 1.5 hours hitting these 2 drivers as both were on my shortlist. For me I couldn’t get the TM to reach the ball speeds of the cobra. Ended up buying the 9 degree cobra (sits more open than 10.5 which suits my swing) with tensei shaft and no arcos connect (1/4” shorter) in Matt white head. V happy.

Taylormade really knocked it out of the park with their latest drivers, the thing I like about the m6 and the Sim is the solid rail on the bottom which allows the head to rest and sit correctly before gripping, which the m5 didn't. Love my m6 won't be changing any time soon

It’s more complex than that the club costs about $100 to manufacture not pennies and then it sells for $350 to retailers now that $250 left over goes to Tour players but also legal advertisements r&d and when it’s all said and done there’s not as much left over as you think. I hit them both last week and thought the SZ was very nice. I couldn't get used to the way the SIM looked with the the way the face was so far inside and there was so much extra club body sticking out over the toe. I hit the SIM three times, couldn't find the center of the face and handed it back.

Still have the Cobra f8+ in the bag here -- I think with all Cobra drivers, when hit higher on the face, they are close to being the longest on the market. Anything near the heel though and one takes a big hit in carry #s -- but all the more reason to try to get better at hitting it solid - the SIM is a pretty great feeling club though so both would do anyone well I personally feel -- thanks Michael!

Interesting that SIM’s spin was so consistent (not to mention pretty optimal). The last few generations of TM for me have looked like the cobra’s std deviation. It’s the primary reason I went from M1 440 to Ping G410 LST. Might lose a little distance with the LST because spin is higher but I get more consistent results. With that said, now that TM may have achieved consistent spin, they might be worth another go.

Just one question? Theirs approximately 100$ difference in price granted but if you choose to use the arcos that’s 100$ a year for the app so if you choose to use it say for 3 years that definitely changes the price ?
@davidmaxfieldgolf
@davidmaxfieldgolf 4 года назад
I think the problem with the SIM and the aerodynamics of the design is that it assumes everyone swings on the same plane which they don’t. So I’d find it interesting the see what happens if you don’t have your downswing on the same plane as the angle of the weight they’ve put in there? As now it’s not movable so would you be fighting the weight in your swing if your plane is on a difference attack angle?

@@TheTactical6string . The Cobra is keeping me in the fairway a lot more than my 2005 Mizuno T-zoid. The Mizuno is still a fine 9 deg driver and I will keep it. The Speedzone at ball impact is ferocious. My ball speed is up as a few more mph on swing speed also. Im getting 10 to maybe 15 yards more distance on avg over the Mizuno. Instead of dispersion numbers (where left and right misses cancel eachother out), the test team at TG used drop-off (max-min) in ball speed, back+side spin, and ball carry as better overall measure of dispersion. Do you agree ?? Can you perhaps show that in future comparisons as it may be more meaningful for the average golfer who do not have clubhead speeds of >115 mph ??

I had a fitting yesterday. I don't upgrade clubs often so was way behind on technology. I went into the fitting wanting to get the Cobra SZ as I had read good things and have had really good luck with Cobra in the past. I personally ended up with the SiM as I was longer and more consistent with it. This is nothing against the Cobra as we all hit some clubs better than others and the SiM just worked better for me. If you're in the market for a driver, my advice is to get a fitting and decide which works best for your swing. It might not even be one of these two.

I don't think there is anywhere near 10 yards carry difference between these drivers, but sometimes an "off" day and a small sample size can play havoc with results. I don't play either of these brands so I don't have a horse in this race, but Cobra would be out of business if they were this much shorter. I believe that they are about the same and that one's individual swing has a lot to do with which may be better for one. That said, I do feel that TM may have better dispersion.

@@mantisSbcc I am a club builder, many years. Riky adds weight strictly for swingweight, his shaft length is at least 1 inch shorter. The mass of weight is not enough to increase ball speed. Adding excessive weights only weakens designated shaft flex & changes dynamic loft depending on placement. Clubhead weight on almost all tour players, minus the shaft adapter 5-10 grams, is ina range from 197-202 grams. I have a target weight of 197-198 with taylormade adapters, 199-200 for Ping heads. This test is so hit or miss, you can’t really base which driver is “best” off a hand full of shots with each one. You had the wide rights with the cobra “first driver tested” then tested the TM naturally correcting those wide right shots technically giving the TM the advantage in this testing format. I’d be willing to bet if you started with the TM those wide rights would have still occurred and your correction would have been made when you got into testing the cobra. Spin rates were higher on the cobra due to those wide rights so same thing with those numbers being a bit subjective to testing format.

Great FULL head to head Mike ! Clearly TM SIM outperformed the SZ, more consistent SPIN #’s across the face (STD Deviation is only 159 for SIM and 520 for Cobra); better dispersion, more distance ! And for me better looking too ! I was custom fit for the F9 last February and had a 2 way miss all year lone over 21 rounds ! Terrible MOI with heavier weight forward! Just sold the F9 driver head, 3W & 4W also ! Clearly Cobra still haven’t figured out how to improve the consistency across the face and dispersion!

jason barger i was custom fit last FEb at CLub Champion NJ with high end ACCRA shafts. In my driver i was fit with fx 2.0 360 M4 shaft, certainly expensive and super high quality. YEs F9 with weight forward has a very low MOI and my 2 way miss isn’t a swing flaw, mostly caused by off center hits. My natural shape is a light draw , path is in to out with a slightly closed face at impact, but can easily fade the ball if needed. My 2.4 index is indicative of a super strong short game inside 100 yards (especially putting , my ARCCOS putting handicap is +5.4). Ball striking/dispersion in my driver isn’t bad by any means but certainly isn’t as strong as my short game. That being said, my F9 driver and fway heads were recently sold on eBay ... Ill be going for a fitting @2ndswinggolf and I’ll be testing Ping G410+, TM SIM MAX, MAVRIK and maybe Mizuno ST200

jason barger you’re spot on. My bad about the shaft. I looked back at my TrackMan #’s. My initial fitting on 2/2/19 showed 2 shots with 13 yd & 9 yd power fades, 1 shot with a 7 yard draw and 1 shot with 33 yard fade. My 2nd (follow up) fitting had 1 shot with a 32 yard draw & 8 yard fade. So clearly I had a 2 way miss which is indicative of my 2 way miss during my 21 rounds last year. More than likely this is a swing flaw Hopefully my fitter can help some of this come springtime I’ve heard the Ventus (real deal) shaft not the “made for” shaft offered by TM on the SIM (although now they have the real deal at a +$250 surcharge) is a great shaft. Might look into this one at my fitting. By they way I have my driver shaft at a 44.5 inch playing length. Maybe lie angle, I’m 5-5”. So Flatter the better and the club champion fitter didn’t address lie angle with my woods. Ping G410+ all have flat settings in the hosel, definitely will have this addressed

jason barger my F9 head was 9 deg. And my average back spin on both days was 2,395 and 2,488 rpm’s which are pretty close to ideal since My avg. smash factor was 1.48 & 1.49 and in fact had a 1.51 on one of my shots. 2 way miss Most likely due to inconsistent strike locations across the face which hopefully is due to incorrect lie angle (too upright). I’ll see at my custom fit later this spring !

On the Michael Newton TS3 v. Rogue shootout, the Titleist TS3 AVERAGE ball speed was 168.7 with a high of 170.6 with he same launch monitor system.. SIM here was 164.1 with a high of 165.1. Shoppers forget so conveniently....convenient for the driver manufacturers I mean....:). All drivers are decent. We aren't getting into new territory, folks. Everyone calm down.

You have to add extra head weight to the Cobra as it has a light swingweight.

“They say shaft length is the same.” Put them down next to each other... Then hit the G410 LST and watch it beat both of them

Can already tell your swing is off before watching the entire video. Not sure what you are going to find out here in this test.

Don’t know why this guy says it’s maybe his fault that his drives were going right... all his drives on all his videos are crap. He never gets them consistently straight, his drives are always Army drives... left right left right.
