This just proves you can have a great adventure on a relatively inexpensive bike, but I personally recommend something that can at least be upgraded at some point. I don't have an uber expensive bike myself, it's a 2020 Trek Roscoe 8 w/ a few upgrades so far; RS Revelation fork, Race Face Affect 35 bar and stem, and SRAM DUB crankset and BB in a 170mm length. I did these upgrades as budget allowed over the last three years of ownership. It's still not a wonder bike like a Yeti or Pivot, but it's taken me on some very adventurous rides w/o fail.
Ironically looks like an advert not to buy a £500 GoOutdoors bike! However, I'm typing this having just got home from MTB night early as my £4k bike now has a broken shock and I have a very torn up arm. Crashes happen regardless. Get well soon!
As this shows, you don't have to spend lots of money to get a capable mountain bike these days. Last year I bought a Polygon Xtrada 5 for less than 500 quid and bikepacked the South Downs Way on it and even took it down The Gap in Brecons. It rode brilliantly, great geometry and nothing broke unlike my expensive full suspension Trek ...
Ill prepared English people not realising that Scottish mountains are actually quite high and also pretty steep and dangerous. Stick to your liitle hills
Yeah, not buyin it. Your lucky you didnt get a cranial fracture. That would have been a truly bad day. You had no confidence and what looked like not much control. I would have been pissed, and would have asked for a huge tip!!! The company you work for should be on their knees for doing that to you. Cheapo bike + huge mountain, what could possibly go wrong?
