Shipping Crown Vic wings (fenders) from the US was going to cost £600 EACH, so with the passenger side sill and structure fixed, I decided to repair the old ones for now.

One of the hardest working guys on RU-vid. Your enthusiasm is astounding. Through heatwaves to snow and ice you are on the floor of your driveway battling with these projects. You deserve great success. Well done.

Proud of you Matt with your perseverance, I’m happy to watch your endeavours with the Crown Vic but I appreciate that every video takes time to create and then edit so if you choose to just knuckle down and get it done I will totally understand as will many others.

Personally, I've really enjoyed how work on the Crown Vic pops up in your feed from time to time. It's not continuous so it's always interesting. I have no doubts that the other side will prove just as interesting - plopped between other great stuff.

Please keep hearing updates on the other side as well. When I did my Trabant the first side took me about a month to repair both upper and lower sill. When I come to do the second side I finished it in a week and it was more rusted then the first side. Your welding has definitely improved massively.

I am dreading what hidden horrors will be revealed on the rear wheel arches. But for the time being, regarding the other side sill, i just hope we actually get some decent enough weather for you to get on with it. Here in Devon it's been a case of dodge the heavy rain downpours for the last couple of weeks or more. Your a brave man to tackle that kind of work outside at this time of year!

I left the UK for sunnier climes, Glenbrook, near Sydney, Aus in 2001 and I'm seriously impressed by your efforts across the board - Mechatronics Engineer talking (Grad 1986 before the term existed really) so am lucky that I can do carbs, Fuel Injection and codes! My welder misses me and one of my personal resolutions for next year will be to fire it up again and do more welding! Not sure what yet as things don't rust much here.

Black! Black! The monks are troubled, and full of woe! I'm a fly trapped in a bottle of shadows! My preference is to see all the detail of the work on the other side. But that's because I have my own vehicle with rotten sills both sides that I haven't started on yet (because I'm still busy rebuilding the entire front end), and I just want to see someone else do it first. Again.

You've come such a long way with your welding skills from those early days of discovering horrific rot on the W123 arches. Now you seem to take even the most demanding of repairs in your stride, with confidence and a flair for fabrication work. Personally, I've enjoyed going along with you for the 'ride' or in this case, 'ride' in the 'drive', ha 😍and would be happy to watch you tackle the other side, which hopefully is easier now you've got some know how on how this old girl is bolted together! Lovely job on that Matt!👍 It might pay in the long term to leave the bottoms of the front wings open like you have, at least then any water and road grime can easily drain/fall out instead of sitting in the cavity and rotting the bottoms of the wings out again. Just pump them fat with cavity wax! I love this car, so I’d like to see more updates as you progress the other side.

£600 sounds reasonable as I would have had to pay over £1500, including fitting, for a new boot lid for my Jetta in '82 if had not been a corrosion warranty claim. The rust discovered when number plate fell off, the built in mountings could not be used with some UK plates, depending on the actual reg. no. to avoid being misread, so the dealer drilled new holes to fit it when new but never rustproofed them.

One of those 'how to' video's popped up on my instagram, it showed how to use expander foam to fill a rust hole then cover it in 'bondo' made me think of your poor fortunes with this. keep plugging along it'll get there and it'll be more your motor at the end than you ever hoped for!.

A while ago I tried looking for RU-vid videos that might help me repair rusty front suspension strut mount areas. There's a lot of videos with people attaching rear shock mounts with bits of steel and self-tapping screws, or glueing strips of steel over the holes. I'm sure I even saw one where he created top mounts for the rear shocks using lengths of wood. I think the problem is that in some parts of the USA, it's legal to drive a car like that on the road.

That old show “pimp my ride” used to cut corners that way. You would have this show quality paint over sketchy/dodgy repairs. Since it was in hot dry California they got away with a lot of it. If it was in a snow state with salt it probably wouldn’t have lasted too long.

I didn’t expect replacement wings would end up costing you that much😱 I suspected the upper arches would have a “hidden” rust repair. They tend to rust there before the lower part. I assume you would get extra wings if some turned up closer to you at a reasonable price? You’ve done a fantastic job though👍 I’ll be sending you several emails with reference pictures the left hand side sill off my parts car. Hope it helps you out for the other side.

the paint looks a very good match, nearly there , i nope not attaching the wing at the bottom does not cause it to vibrate when driving , it would not be to hard to make an l shaped pannel to close the bottom and give a fixing to the bottom of the wing, as the expanding foam is light weight i think the previous owner had taken collin chapmans saying of "adding lightness" a bit to literally😉 as a fellow classic car owner i know how good it feels to drive a can that has been off the road for a while , so keep that thought in mind when you are laying on you back under the car in the cold and rain taking the skin of you knuckles, cutting you self on razor sharp pieces of metal and burring your self with weld splatter 🤔👍
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 8 месяцев назад
Bear in mind it has never been attached all the time Ive had it - the panel it bolts onto didnt exist until I put it back, so I dont think its going to be an issue, theres a bolt into the bulkhead just behind there as well

HI Matt This may be of interest to you and all your followers. Using the paint code on the car for a spray can is OK providing the car is not too old.. We all know that paint fades with time hence the mismatching..Take part of the car ,ie petrol filler door etc to a good paint supplier ,they can now scan the paint surface and mix your spay can to the exact colour that you now have magic.. Haven't seen any other car channel tell every DIY er about this so check it out and be the man...
