Western civilisation has constantly been under attack during the years Roger Scruton spent as a philosopher. His experience in Paris in 1968 - where he witnessed an assault on police by radicals on barricades - spurred the young Scruton to the defense of civility and civilisation, against the ideological frenzy of the protesters. Finding the roots of Western civilisation in the negotiated settlement of the Greek city-state, Sir Roger viewed dialogue as central to civilisation. This view contrasts with the totalitarianism which has had many different faces over the last century, from communist regimes to radical activist groups.
Roger Scruton spent much of his life defining and defending what he saw as the great achievements of Western civilisation: the nation state and secular law, classical music and architecture, the Christian religion and the Western tradition of literature and art. Scruton approached this rich inheritance in a spirit of love, gratitude and joy, arguing for its rediscovery. Like the other great writers and thinkers of our civilisation, Scruton leaves us with a rich legacy of books and speeches of which we are now the stewards. His work has become part of the Western tradition he fought so hard to preserve.
